This is probably what you're looking for: https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Splitscreen

DoomWiki.org

Splitscreen is a multiplayer feature added into Doom in several ports made since the original release. It allows the screen to be split into several player views at once, thus enabling multiplayer on a single system.

Différence between mods and maps

azure nimbus
# calm rivet Différence between mods and maps

technically, mods refer to any 3rd party stuff you download for doom (whether it be maps or weapon/monster changes) whereas maps are the levels specifically. But, I have noticed that people who play more zdoom oriented content that changes more fundamentals of the game like brutal doom tend to say that they are playing "mods" when they play a level set and people who play more vanilla style content tend to say "mapset" when they play 3rd party levels and will sometimes say "resource pack" for 3rd party content that only changes weapons or sprites but doesn't add new levels

calm rivet
#

i see

hexed escarp
vast reef
#

bc maps usually don't really mess with game mechanics and such like what people usually expect from video game mods

#

like a minecraft mod and a minecraft adventure map

hexed escarp
#

Ig, but for some other games, a mod can simply be a collection of maps

vast reef
hexed escarp
vast reef
#

it's like a megawad for mario

but it's not really considered a mod

hexed escarp
vast reef
#

yeah, since you modify the game

hexed escarp
#

Idk what I’m even arguing at this point lol

vast reef
#

imo though mapsets don't really feel like mods

#

a minecraft adventure map isn't a mod unless you add new items, weapons, etc.

#

same goes for doom maps, you aren't changing anything in how the game works, just loading in different level files

hexed escarp
vast reef
#

you change what the engine does at least

Using this logic, only source ports are mods

azure nimbus

#

its also a user preference thing too

narrow condor
#

It's considered cheating in multiplayer.

#
DoomWiki.org

Red dot is a multiplayer cheat which adds a red dot to the center of the screen, intended for use as a crosshair to aid aiming. This is considered unfair as it may provide an aim advantage to the cheating player. This is only useful in vanilla Doom, as almost all modern source ports have a 'crosshair' option, which can even be customizable.

vast reef
#

most if not all big source ports these days have crosshair options i'm pretty sure

hexed yoke
narrow condor
#

As for single-player, I'd say fixing the blockmap bug and better collision detection are both significantly better QoL improvements, so if using crosshair is cheating, so should be using GZDoom at all.

The Unity ports support local multiplayer but there are dedicated source ports such as Zandronum, Odamex (I think that’s what it’s called), and ZDaemon

Zandronum is like the GZDoom equivalent of multiplayer ports if you want good mod support that’s the port for you

tranquil zephyr

so you’ll need something like Steam Remote Play to do something like multiplayer in the Unity port

otherwise, just pick up a multiplayer-orientated source port as we’ve said

also, I’m assuming you’re using the Unity port due to the fact multiplayer is on the main screen

#

but if you gonna use multiplayer like once in a while, Unity with Steam Remote Play or Chocolate, Crispy, and Woof

#

if you gonna use it a lot more often, use a source port dedicated to multiplayer (as I’ma be honest, the multiplayer in all 4 of those source ports kinda suck, and the last 3 are based on all players for performance for some odd reason, which is annoying)

Not to mention they're also fairly manageable to kill most times.

You put a chaingunner in a corner, they're gonna take health but react fast enough and its done.

Meanwhile shotgunners in nightmare shoot the moment they saw you, and have a chance to take off all that HP you have in a single shot.

#

Though I do agree chaingunners are a bigger problem in UV or HRP

stuck shuttle
#

The issue is that a chaingunner's accuracy and rate of fire means it can tear you apart regardless or distance, and especially close quarters where it can kill you in a matter of seconds, and it also tends to snipe you where it's hard to find cover in quite a few maps. The thing about the shotgunner is that unless it somehow manages to surprise you and land a blast in a close quarters situation, they're not much more of a threat than random zombiemen. Chaingunners are also the most resilient human-type enemies, so they will usually land shots no matter what.

In short, shotgunners are better for ambushes with monster closets in my view, while the chaingunner can be a major pest regardless of distance

dawn valley

I'm not seeing anything about how they're able to pop off a singular shot for 35 damage vs a poultry 3-5 from a chaingunner's bullet.

I'll take a singular chaingunner over a shotgunner if only by virtue that I'll at least get a reliable tool for stunlocking trash mobs out of it. shotgunners can fall into a hole and never come out.

vast reef
#

getting jumped by a shotgunner is much worse than a chaingunner

ornate vortex
#

depends on the situation

vast reef
dawn valley
#

it's simple really. if I'm faced with both in any one encounter at the same time, I'll kill the shotgunner first then the chaingunner.

ornate vortex
#

well, an up close shotgunner is pretty awful

#

but chaingunners when either grouped up or at sniping distances

vast reef
ornate vortex
#

when i mean grouped up i mean lined up, because if they were clustered then they’d just obliterate each other

vast reef
dawn valley
#

I'll go for the shotgunner first because it's got lower health.

#

and try to line up a shot so that it also hits the chaingunner.

vast reef
#

we solved the argument

dawn valley
#

or you could do the opposite and have the shotgunner blast the chaingunner, at which point you oughta be able to kill them both with one trigger pull. whichever way works best.

ornate vortex
#

chaingunner would most likely win because pain chance on a shotgunner is significantly higher and chaingun fires at a faster rate

dawn valley
#

he'll turn around to target the shotgunner then.

#

a lot of time to prep up a shot or whip out a better gun

ornate vortex
#

it’ll give you time yes, but the time depends on the spread of the tracers

#

and also it depends what guns you’re using

#

if you have a shotgun, you could just get very close to the chaingunner and blast it, considering majority of the shots won’t miss and you’re much more likely to one shot kill it

Anybody seen the ahoy video on classic doom?

void hemlock
#

I have

fluid estuary
#

Hello

#

I'm making a video that has a short section on 3D graphics and I am curious about some very specific details of the DOOM engine's limitations

#

Is there anyone here that could confidently answer them?

#

most notably, if there was any sort of restriction on map size, or even if maps too large of a size would be too laggy for the hardware it was originally made for

narrow condor
#

Vanilla maps?

#

Vanilla maps have a lot of hard limits that limit-removing ports raise.

#

What you should be concerned about isn't the physical size of the map as much as the number of actors that require rendering at any given time, as well as the total number of surfaces (visplanes) the player can see at any given time.

#

https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Visplane_overflow
BTSX uses black magic node building tricks to circumvent visplane overflow in its purely vanilla maps.

DoomWiki.org

The visplane overflow (often abbreviated to VPO) is a fatal error that occurs in vanilla Doom when there are more than 128 unique floor and ceiling surfaces (visplanes) on the screen simultaneously.

fluid estuary
#

Yes, vanilla maps

narrow condor
#

There are many other hard limits, but again, most source ports outright remove them if not raise them to reasonable levels.

fluid estuary
#

The video in particular is about the limitations of creating "long distance scenery" for old 3D games

#

is there any particular "hard limit" i could use as an accurate representation of the sort of max limits possible

narrow condor
#

Doom isn't smart enough to determine whether a visplane is far enough that it can get away with not rendering it.

#

There's an entire table of limits on DoomWiki, hold on.

fluid estuary
#

I did see those, but I couldn't particularly parse them well

narrow condor
#
DoomWiki.org

This is a list of static limitations of the vanilla Doom engine, including Heretic, Hexen, and Strife. In addition, Doom Classic and Strife: Veteran Edition are also covered. Note that rendering-related limits (such as MAXVISSPRITES) do not apply to Strife: Veteran Edition's hardware-accelerated renderer, and are only used when the game is using...

fluid estuary
#

or at least I wasn't confident that I could without seeming like an idiot

#

so you're saying that if something was too far out in the distance, it wouldn't be able to render it and, say, crash?

#

or am I mistaken

narrow condor
#

No no, I'm saying Doom is too stupid to use tricks like not rendering far out objects to conserve memory.

fluid estuary
#

gotcha, so if there was too much stuff on the level, it simply didnt have tricks to minimize that and so levels were limited in their total size through that

narrow condor
#

In fact, neglecting to render a any seg results in this amusing bug: https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Hall_of_mirrors_effect

DoomWiki.org

Under the Doom engine, if the no-clipping cheat is used to go outside the level, a shimmering mass is visible in the empty space outside, composed of parts of previous frames of animation. The same effect can be achieved by making a level with a wall which has no texture. This is called the Hall of mirrors effect. The name comes from the fact th...

#

Yeah, pretty much. You had to keep the number of distinct visible surfaces low on any single point the player can look from. One too many and it's a fatal crash.

fluid estuary
#

understood, thank you

vast reef
fluid estuary
#

on a wider scale, the video is about "floating islands" in games and how their origin came from the extremely limited nature of older 3D games, forcing art designers to sort of canonize it and turn it into an aesthetic. this DOOM segment was for a sort of history section and to cover the earlier iterations of 3D and how most of the time they stuck to interiors to avoid such problems

narrow condor
#

I wonder who originally came up with the fog-of-war type of dynamic rendering.

fluid estuary
#

anyways, I do appreciate the answer

narrow condor
#

Yeah, that's a good point about interiors. It's called a corridor shooter for a reason. Maps with wide open exteriors had to use very simple geometry early on.

#

Like buildings that are just plain rectangles.

fluid estuary
#

Yeah, I'm liking how it's turning out so far, I just didn't wanna take a random pot shot at how it works and knew that DOOM classic players and mappers know a lot about the engine

narrow condor
#

If you're interested in an assisted deep dive into the engine's guts, there's the book Game Engine Black Book: Doom.

I don't think people hate the current Unity port. But it's not very flexible, that's for sure.

sick mist

It runs the game on modern systems. If you need more just download another sourceport

¯_(ツ)_/¯

automatic SR50 and SR50 on turns

#

not worth complaining about other than that it creates a rift between console and PC speedrunning, and not an interesting one like titanfall, because console speedrunning lets you do impossible inputs that makes normally godly times trivial

vale gyro
#

I hate the Unity Port just because it makes SR50 apparently easier and well, the weapon wheel or however you would call it that pops up

balmy mason

I sure love GZDoom

#

it's better than the steam version and Dos

but I wanna change the ost

#

from the midi to the one in the steam release

remote cedar
#

Since you're using GZDoom you can probably make a mod that does just that

#

I don't see why you would trust the music in the Steam release though

#

since it made weird changes to some tracks

absolutely butchered Kitchen Ace (And Taking Names) which is my all-time favorite
