What I do for my server personally is enabling everything that I personally find useful, and not do copy/paste when it comes to what other servers also do for the same thing. For example, most servers have level roles that are named "level 5" and so on for role rewards, but mine are themed based on the theme of my personal server. That's one way it can stand out, there are plenty of others

You can get a role when you level up, but I believe the plugin requires premium (it will show on the dashboard, there will be a 
next to what's premium). All of the possible options will be on that part of the dashboard. Beyond that, it also is up to your own creativity (like the role names for example)
There are other possibilities outside of the levels plugin as well 
(this was just one example, the first one I thought of)

The reason we have a level system is to reward people who are active.
Just like in any other server.
For support channels, these rules (send images, send files etc.) do not count.
We also use the system, to prevent new people from joining the server, for 1 reason: doing stuff against our rules / TOS
