Yess and no. Theres other options. For example, there's some tools to play all previous expeditions offline. Or you can use the service bot for getting the rewards.

mm depends on what you count as easier. with your main save, you would be able to bring items into the expedition and use them, so if you wanted, bring like a warp cell or smth. you can bring packaged tech too

and if you want to start fresh, with no items, you can still do your main save, but just not bring any items. I'd say it's definitely easier to do it on your main save

A few tips since this is apparently in abandoned mode

For every station you go to make sure you interact with the yellow salvage boxes (small containers)

They more often than not contain modules and other things

You cannot get a freighter at all so don't bother looking for them, pirates also do not exist in abandoned mode, and by extension, pirate systems.

All stations will be abandoned ones using an update version of the NEXT station model.

I currently can’t complete the objective to search the freighter. Every time I exit the corvette I get flung away thousands and thousands of meters. Reloading the game just ate my scanner and is making me craft another one and I still can’t get out of my corvette properly. Guess I’ll be waiting for a patch

For the current expedition you need the atlantid drive for the mission. But to get that you need indium. But to get that you need the indium drive. But to get that is????? I breezed through expedition 19, but this one has already blocked me twice, because the game also doesn't say you can refine the quartzite for chromatic metal

For expeditions started from a preexisting primary save, the Expedition Terminal’s locker unlocks when you complete all required milestones, but not before, right? Meaning, you can “pack” things you think you might need before but not alter them once the expedition’s started. But once you’ve finished the goals, you can go back and forth between saves and move things as you like? (Except for things that are expedition-specific like the station-teleporter gizmos from the last one, of course…)

I think they get boring and repetitive and people certainly played the hell out of them when they were the only sure sources for certain resources (like SFM’s). But most people probably don’t ever bother with them, so the expeditions are a way to engage. I think they’re pretty fun the first few times, and in VR they’re always super-spooky in a way NMS rarely is.

They don’t always do a great job of distinguishing between true new-game tutorial triggers and expeditions, so any prompt that looks exactly like one you get in a new game like that can usually be safely ignored. One way to check this is to select different milestone objectives — the related pointer will come up immediately after selecting a milestone and exiting the screen if it’s expedition-related.

If you think you might want to bring inventory items back to your save (or bring items in, like I do with Rocket Boots), do it from the Anomaly terminal. Otherwise it doesn’t matter. (Inventory items, meaning actual things that have chips in your inventory storage. Anything else from the expedition you can get from the vendor later.)

For those, the best thing to do if you have nanites in your original save is: 1) complete the expedition but don’t finalize it at the terminal; 2) build a corvette with all the parts you want to bring over; 3) switch to primary save; 4) go to the Expedition Terminal and copy your ship over; 5) take it to a station to rip it up for parts.

If you don’t care about something some might consider an exploit, you can even sell the ship to an NPC so it’s not in your ship list anymore and then re-copy it for a second copy of the corvette parts. Repeat as many times as you like and nanites allow.

Just checked — I have the respawning supply lockers that require the v2 and v1 passes on my freighter and I can’t open them if I only have the v3. This could be a freighter-only problem though, I don’t have time to go look right now

If you wanna geek out: multiplayer requires a lot of things — that can just “happen” in single player — to be done almost like a bank transaction, with journal and rollback in case you and and the other players have a delay or networking glitch that would otherwise result in two copies of something, or you thinking you took damage while the other players doesn’t see any damage, etc. Some of those things the game does regardless, but some it skips when you’re not in multiplayer. Those kind of things are often fiddly and involve things like triggers going off, so disabling MP lets the whole situation just run much more straightforwardly.

One would hope that expeditions with a multiplayer milestone, even an optional one, to be better prepared for, but it’s notoriously difficult to QA multiplayer issues — it’s an exponentially larger number of cases to check, and playtesting will almost never randomly come across them.

Turning off multiplayer for every expedition is a good idea — can’t even begin to count the number of expedition glitches that are fixed just by disabling MP.

AFAIK, there’s never been an expedition milestone that required you to go “fishing the Galaxy Map” — things might be easier if you get a Conflict Scanner or something and go off the beaten trail, but generally everything the milestones want are in the first system or one of the Rendezvous systems. (Not just that, but in the same system as the milestone’s rendezvous or the rendezvous/starting system immediately prior.)

I made a covette named "one of every kind" and put one of every type of corvette piece I could and then after the exped I copied and deleted them to the basics to have a corvette storage full of parts

I mentioned this earlier. Until you finalize the expedition, you can even sell the ship you paid nanites for in your main save and re-copy it for more nanites and do it again and again

The salvaging may be expedition-only. But it’s not an easy question to answer comprehensively — most expeditions have items that would be quite useful in an ordinary game, and sometimes you can transfer them over via the Expeditions Terminal even if you can’t craft or procure them in the regular game, usually not.
