You have to remember to craft items and such on your base premises. Otherwise it seemed very straight forward to me. Way simpler and shorter than the only other one I’ve done. (Voyagers)

• Remaining fuel in Ship Launch Thrusters, and that you have something to recharge it with once you're off base.

Make sure you get the Analysis Visor installed. Useful for locating creatures and many other things. Once you then locate a creature, you can check use 'bait' and tame one

Sweetroot can be found on all planets, except dead planets. For gases, depending on which you are looking for, check the discovery tab, or scan the planet from space. It should be listed (other than regular gases present anywhere)

The first planet you put a base on, is a good one, tame one, and get about 4000 copper and ferrite, and you can cruise through this exped. Those are the two things that will slow people down, and you can get it all on the first planet

I soft locked myself on my first try on the utopia expedition had to create a new utopia expedition save

Basically I deleted my base terminal because I placed it on a island in the middle of the sea and I then realized there was bigger land with trees I needed carbon so I deleted my base went to the other place only to realize I needed chromatic metal to make a new base terminal and I didn't get the base terminal back or the resources from it when it was deleted there was no terrain manipulator and no copper near by and there was a storm that hit and killed me

Basically I was kinda in a a bad spot

So I just created a new save

I'm new to the game (so maybe less appropriate asked here) and trying the Expedition as my intro to the game. I feel like I'm spinning my wheels a lot with just like... not knowing the systems that well. I wasted a lot of time and resources getting fuel for my ship, to leave the second planet to get to the spacestation to warp to my first base and then do that again to get back to the second planet... only to not have brought my Nomad exosuit with me. Very frustrating.

Are there ways I can easily upgrade myself or make things go faster? I feel like I'm taking forever with this when people seem to be able to beat the expedition quickly somehow.

Expeditions are really meant for people who know at least the very basics of the game as there are no tutorials on how to do the basics etc in the expeditions. The general mechanic of expeditions is just to complete the expedition objectives. These can in general be done in any order. They arnt so much about "leveling up" but you generally tend to from rewards from the expedition objectives. I would suggest watching Jason Plays YouTube video on the expedition as he usually goes step by step through each objective.

it is possible to start pretty fresh and make it through the expedition even without the tutorials the game normally forces on you - ask questions in here, you'll be fine. The ship at the end of Utopia is worth it. Here's what I learned last time around :
Basically, mine everything, scan everything. Look at the goals on all the phases (not just the one you're in) and see if there's something nearby you can use to achieve it.
If you're on a hazardous planet, the resource that you fuel your protection with is usually also found commonly enough. Assuming you have protection. But always carry a bunch of Sodium.
Also, before you leave your base, look up what materials you'll need at your goal because you won't be allowed to craft anything if you're not in a base. (Other people's bases work for this though).
For the Exocraft - once you build the summoning platform you can delete it and reclaim the materials, so you can build another one easily on your next planet. The expedition tends to push you towards what you need, so don't worry about resources, you'll find them. Once you locate your allocated build site, you can build your base anywhere on the planet and still meet the goal criteria, so if the site is overrun with baddies just get close enough to the marker to tick the box and then run away.
Don't use your ship to shoot ground based enemies. They'll call in air support, and then you either have to run very fast, very far to get away, hide in the Anomaly (summon it in orbit from the menu) or fight 5 waves of them till they call in a mothership, down that mothership and then use the data it drops to find a supercool space invader ship.
If you see copper, mine it. Utopia eats a lot of copper.
If you see sentient plants or whispering eggs or gravitino balls, leave them be if you don't want a fight on your hands.
I found it was worth creating a teleporter on planet 1, and jump back to restock resources in peace when needed.

Little annoyed and I just started. You can only craft stuff at your base? So why did they have our ships thousands of units away from our starting area? I built my base where I started. Do everything up to locate ship. I get to the ship and I need Di-Hydrogen Jelly. But I can't craft it cause I'm not at my base. So now I have to go all the way back to my base just to craft it and then go all the way back. Am I understanding that correctly? Is there no shortcut? Would have been nice to know I needed it before I found my ship so I wouldn't have to go all the way back 😵‍💫 😬

Yeah the most annoying part of this expedition was probably reaching your ship in the worst terrain ever luckily I checked the spaceship inventory to see what I needed and make it before making the journey

1. I constantly run out of space
2. I completely forgot how to build practically anything. So I clicked randoms buttons and figured it out
3. I completely forgot how to make chromatic metal thing and I had to hunt for copper
4. After building stuff for my ship, I got lost in space for a while because I didn't know where to go and I ran out fuel
5. I finally landed on the planet I was supposed to be on and after getting a map, I went to the ancient ruin and I forgot the gravity ball triggers those sentinel bots and I was on a chase for, at least five minutes.
6. Anyways, I think I'm on the right planet but I'm not quite sure-

The only tip I have is I remember thinking on the last planet "Damn, I wish I'd have mined a bunch of cobalt on the last planet so I don't have to go back for it". So grab a cobalt spot or two's worth before you go to the last planet.

I’m similar to you I’m afraid. I came back after years just in time to do Voyages (my rec for that is seek out advice here for any ones you have difficulty finding as there’s a lot of ‘creature taller than x’ or ‘planet more hostile than y’ and it can be frustrating with bad luck).

Tip #1 - try not to get bogged down in recovering Interceptor ships every time you get an opportunity. Get the first one, then move on. You only have a week to finish the expedition and this isn't progressing a goal.
Tip #2 - Harvest Atlantideum every chance you get. Don't wait till you need it and are on a hostile planet.
Tip #3 - read up on the phase goals and look for the stuff that you'll need to construct parts, make a shopping list and start buying in Trade Terminals from the get-go, so that when you need those parts you don't have to waste time looking for them.
Tip #4 - you want both heads, don't you. Everyone wants both heads. Make sure you save just before you complete Ignition Atlantid / Crimson - soothe the head, run back to your ship, hop in and out. complete one of the ignitions, then reload and complete the other one. Should work.

As I recall I didn't claim the reward, just unlocked it. But as per Hopalong they may have patched it out. I was quite late finishing it, but I'm on switch, we could still be waiting on that patch - sometimes I'm amazed we have spaceships in the switch port.
My sequence was : do the 2nd last phase task on the Anomaly. Run back to ship. Hop in and out again to trigger a save. Run back to the fella to make my final choice. Once the success music played, claim the phase reward from the menu (but not from the vendor). Reload. Repeat for other head.

@ashen shore tip for the near future: never land somewhere without double checking that ship has enough fuel to launch again - if you're not certain, use ship quick scan to try and ping POI near your objective, that have a landing pad/area so that you can launch again after without needing fuel.

You can also buy the auto recharge launcher. If you stranded you just wait enough for it to charge and off you go

I think you can buy that in the anomaly if I’m not mistaken. Yeah it’s 460 nanites at anomaly and you can build it on every ship from then on. It charges your launch thruster 4% a minute when grounded apparently

But youll need extra chromatic for some other things along the way

• Game Mode Explained: Expeditions are an alternate time-limited, season-like game mode with a set of challenges rewarding exclusive items that can be claimed in any and all of your saves, in any game mode account-wide. When you finish the expedition you may convert your save to a pre-determined game mode -- most expeditions convert to Normal, with the exception of Expedition 7 which converted to Survival. At the end of the event, the game forces the conversion.

• Saving: Although the game autosaves, make sure to synchronize your restore save point often, by exiting your starship and using save beacons/points.

• Save before claiming a reward, in case the reward glitches. Save after receiving the reward, in case the game crashes after.

• Don't hoard stuff early on. Exosuit storage is not abundant when you start out. Before you can upgrade storage, only keep items for active quests or what you need for survival (e.g., oxygen or life support gel, sodium or sodium nitrate for hazard protection). Sell or discard everything else. Hover over loot you come across, the item card says what you can use it for.

Double check before getting rid of items received from milestones, as they may be useful for other milestone requirements.

• Update Multiplayer configurations: Disable PvP and Base permissions to reduce potential headaches, like being griefed by other players. If you experience glitches, especially in heavily populated areas, including the Space Anomaly or warping with your freighter, disable Multiplayer and reload your save. Not hard to find, I play permadeath, and for a long while, all those random plants wre really great to have, so I had a good eye to chase them down early

In this exped, they were handy, because they were another way to refill hazard and life support, since oxygen and sodium didnt work

So I always chase them down ehwn I see them

You dont need to, really

Get a few of the larval cores by snagging them fast after breaking an egg, then run in the building, the brood will time out

You need to kill the 5 for the exped, i think?

Then you can just run to your ship, or in the building, etc

the expedition mission for "the cleanse" is bugged. I go to the terminal it says to and go through it but it does not complete. I had accessed it in the base then did the mission to destroy eggs and it then had me go back in and interract with it but is not completing. any way to fix it?
