PC is the only ones who can tame wild one with a mod yes. But all platforms can have them. Interact, feed, pet, lay eggs. But you need someone to give you an egg first.

I normally make it a point to scan every creature on every planet, don't recall 19 before but I'm pretty sure I did an 18 planet before. Had giant worms bombarding me while I was swimming looking for the last water creature

The wild flying worms aren't tamable without mods, though one can get an egg as an expedition reward which can be redeemed on any save file, and both that worm and worms tamed by players with mods can provide eggs that can be freely traded

Fair enough, and if that's the case then they're pretty much the same. Think of it like, say, the diplo's, where they can have different body parts that can greatly vary their appearance. Both are the same creature type, so both ride roughly the same.

And yes, wild ones can only be tamed with mods, but the sand worm egg from the expedition reward can be gene modified to replace the sand worm parts with other parts of that creature class, at random

Though some people here are practiced in hand making creatures with save editors, which I am not

I've been given this thing in the space anomaly by a random person. It acts real weird and I can't interact with it.

Expedition 4, which for a quick summery, is a limited time 'alternate game mode' for lack of better terms, with expedition 10 active right now. You go through a mini-campaign doing steps and progressing through a small part of the galaxy with other players to unlock the rewards, which can then be redeemed on other saves. They only have one expedition active at a time, if any, and they do cycle them back in.

And yeah, I had a random stranger give me an egg for a sand worm as well, though it's odd if you can't interact with it.

These are flying snakes, they are the only ones that work for taming unlike the sandworm, people just call them sandworm because it’s easier than their technical name and they can look like sandworms, flying lizards are the birds

hey folks. i'm a NMS newbro. so i read somewhere that if you use the gene resequencer you can sometimes create an entirely new species (that you could probably also rename)? is there any truth to that?

Alright, so at the anomaly, towards the right near the apperance modifier there is the gene sequencer, and once you get an egg you can bring it there. You can use materials to do things like change the pets size and color, (any eggs you get from pets are identical to the parents otherwise) but one of the settings scrambles the 'dna' and makes the child increasingly different from the parent. So, for example, a butterfly snake pet without a tail could have its egg modified to have the child have a tail instead. You won't turn it from a butterfly into something else, but the parts that make up that group of creatures can be randomized there.

Technically, no, because there are 256 galaxies with a lot of stars and planets, any potential creature you create is bound to be somewhere out there, but the child can be very different from the parent, though the gene shuffling is random so you won't know what you'll get until you hatch the egg.

I submit the Helmeted Tigrena for consideration - the model parts alone put it at ~1 in 1.3 trillion different cat-type fauna. Colours multiply that by 16^5. Specific textures? (patterning of stripes/scales/etc) Multiply one more time, by several dozen minimum. (unsure exactly how many variations there, but Mjstral told me flat out it's at least triple digits)

The only type among these pets I consider in any way useful/appealing are the Sentinel ones - you can summon them and deal damage to trigger 3 Diamond wanted level anywhere on any planet - but they desync MP while theyre summoned

I can hand you any pet a modder could tame - youd be able to summon/dismiss, but no other interactions.... unless you installed the pet taming mod, not to try and tame things, just for the interaction added to the pet

@ember plume The gene resequencer mechanics leave much to be desired for altering pet parts - I'm convinced it isn't possible to target specific combinations of parts regardless of how many successive generations one breeds through. That leaves save editing + egg gifting the only alternative.

I will admit I may be wrong about the resequencer, and am happy to argue about it with anyone who can show me screenshots of 3 generations of a species, the full-grown child and grandchild each displaying 3 non-colour differences from its predecessor XD

You can check the list out yourself, but I honestly just use some of the more common elements, since you can get many of them easily enough and can keep putting the same egg into the sequencer until it won't get larger.

There's some info pinned here. But if you need assistance with save editing, you can also check #nms-modding. For sandworms, you can prob also ask someone to trade you an egg in-game.

For creatures you can tame in the game playing vanilla (no game mods / save editing), you feed them and then tame them. When they're old enough they can hatch an egg for you to modify with the sequencer.

So… I read the article on the Wiki about using the egg sequencer, but it didn’t answer my question of what materials can to what in it. Any tips on using the egg sequencer, such as good combinations for the catalysts?

So each of the 4 sections will do different things. For size that link I posted shows what items will raise/lower the creatures size, and how much you need for a 'full dose.' That just means you can only tweak a particular stat for an egg so much per time in the sequencer, but you can take a modified egg and put it into the thing again to modify it further. For color, you need to look up the specific creature and see what items provide what particular color combinations. For the Gene Splitter and Neural Calibrator, these two articles have tables describing those aspects.

In short the splitter will randomize parts of the child compared to the parent, and there is no way to refine to a particular result, and the neural calibrator can make your companions work differently, so see the specific tables for which will modify which things. There aren't specific good combinations, just depends on what you're trying to do.

Oh, and those tables are collapsed by default, I'd forgotten that last time I went to that site.

@deep badger So the wiki was surprisingly accurate on the topic, but doesnt quite hit the nail on the head. When doing mutations, a regular dose generally advances 1 sequential step forward 3 parts - head, body, and tail accessory. after hitting the last accessory in a group, major part type shifts to next in line. (see teddy -> turtle head mogara)
Unfortunately, my research indicates that those sequential mutations don't cycle, meaning one will generally hit a dead end prior to achieving a desired outcome, if it were possible to begin with.

I use a mod on the Nexus that just lets you tame them, then you can tweak their ai otherwise they like diving into the ground a little to much. Some other people are more knowledgeable and can directly add the pets to saves, but I've never done that. I'd offer an egg since that's the easiest way to get one but won't be around for a while

Also butterflies are the best, in my opinion, and I used a save editor to get mine to the size you'd see in some of my photos here

I'd be able to provide you both some at some point, but as far as the name of the mod it was Companion Pet Unlocker, and the current version let's you tame creatures from an excessive distance, where before you'd need to build a base and try to catch one inside a building. But once you get one you'd need to open your save in a save editor to change the ai from whatever the default is to either the butterfly ai or another I can't remember, because otherwise the tamed bird will often fly directly into the ground

I currently don’t have the diplo for the eggs as I needed a bit of room in my companion list to try another breeding experiment, but I have room now so I can probably go get it once I have downtime tonight

Just use a full dose for coloring; I don’t remember how much the full dose was but it didn’t take my full stack (I had fifteen of the magno-gold, but it didn’t need that much for the full dose).
I can get an egg of the blue and yellow diplo, but it will be bigger than the original red and white one.
And yes, the location is for the diplo. I believe I @‘ed you when I posted that message.

Given that I got the blue and yellow one from using the magno-gold on the red and white diplo egg, like the chart says, is a pretty good indicator that the color chart works

@noble dew @lilac hearth Size/parts doesnt matter, the same fauna type will always get the same set of colours from using the same "dye" item. The patterning isnt fixed though, meaning eg. on a Cat, a purple+red+yellow colourseed (Creamy Sauce or Partially Liquid Cheese) can yield a striped pattern, or scaly plates, or half front/half back, or the super rare inverted texture. Each pair here had the same dye used on their eggs, but specific CreatureSeed procgens the texture, or "pattern" one gets; the bottom specimens are sporting the rare "inverted" colour pattern,as Ive been calling it.

Found a planet with lots of these sand gliding things and protorollers, it’s a gamma planet but still kinda cool.
I very rarely see the angler lures generated well, this was an exception.
Unfortunately you can’t tame this animal, but the protorollers look pretty cool, ngl

I don’t always ride my pets anyway, it’s kinda nice to just walk with them as I go resource gathering
There’s only one that I will ride consistently when I need to get to a location faster than I can run

I have a question with the pet unlocker mod. I just installed it and notice all my pets have the ‘cant carry more eggs message’, even pets that have never given me eggs because they are babies.

Finally got enough nanites to get another pet slot for the extra big diplo in the last photo, but now I have too many diplo’s. I might abandon the first two, get an egg from the extra big one once it grows up, and resequence it to different colors to stand out more against my planet

To get the blue-yellow color, get magno-gold and use 100% dose. I think it was less than ten magno-gold for the coloring dose

So what was messing up my pets was the option the mod has to reduce the egg timer. For some reason, my pets were going from infant to elderly. I reverted my save to pre-mod and rebuilt the mod choosing N for that option. Now everything is working as intended.

So if anyone else has a similar issue with your pets super aging and not able to give eggs, just rebuild the mod with no egg timer reduction.

Depends what creatures you are trying to tame? Just keep in mind creatures like the bird and worms (flying-lizard and flying-snake) you see flying around cannot be tamed without a mod or obtained via save editor, the only flying creatures like the beetles and butterflies can be tamed

this is likely because the planet was "reskinned" during an Apollo stage of your Artemis path (after you entered a portal opened as part of the questline). The reskin was only temporary.

The planet is now back to what it's supossed to be

Those "bleeding balloons" are fairly common on all bubble planets, and you will find another one.
