You can only get the capital style freighters from battles (regardless of class), but the normal system freighters come in S class too.

What I'd recommend is save before warping, and if theres a freighter that needs saving, rescue it and see if its what you want, if no reload the save and try again

Afaik this bug is still active:
After the battle triggers, just land in the station and create an autosave.
This will make the battle disappear.
But that's ok, just go back outside and find the freighter.
Land in it and look at the floor with your visor, you can see the class that way.
If it's not the class you want, reload the autosave and repeat.

Note: It will say you need to pay for it if you're still entitled to a free one, but it won't actually cost you anything.

Also worth noting is outlaw systems have the highest S class spawn rates by far.
But if you're happy with an A class, you're better off hunting in 3 star economies.
