so you're trying to cross platform from-to which platforms?
if you cross save to steam for example, once you download the save from hello games cloud to the pc, for the game to use, at that point, the save file is in your pc hard drive - save editor can read it
pc to xbox, but the things i change on pc don't even show up there

ah ok, all good. another thing that came to mind was, if you're still not getting results in game after save editing, run a file system search for files with *.hg extension. if you get dupes, or two diff paths, that's probably indicating you're editing the wrong folder
@urban tangle Make sure if you are editing the autosave, you do not have the game open while editing or it will often be overwritten with the game's autosave. Also, if in NMSSE, make sure you do a final save on the main tab.

Both Ships of Moar and gShip Custom Ships have a few. Neither updated to current and no ETA when they will be. Be aware that when one, the other, or both are updated, only those with the same mod installed will be able to see.
Thought modding might be the best place for this, tried out one of the modded Corvettes and saw that the NPC's do actually still land on the pads. It just breaks whenever you move. As people who mod the game what's the feasibility that one day NPC's can land on a Corvette (or player) and it stay on the Corvette?
I'm guessing it would need to count as part of the base somehow but unsure if ships could count as a "base object" once landed
It's not something that we could do, not outside the realm of HG doing it but there's really not much of a point since players can only have one active starship, and they don't wanna make players feel obligated to make each corvette a Super Aircraft Carrier to hold all their friends' ships
That seems more of a feature for freighters to get, if they ever get another rework
Landed starships are just completely static objects. They can't be turned into anything else when entering the landed state (or at least, not without significantly breaking other functionality of the game) so we'll just have to wait and hope the HG will eventually code moving landing pads into the game
Today I tried modding to increase the max part count and max corvette editing size, but despite the game saying im playing with mods I cant seem to use the functionality of them. Any advice?

With NMS, mods can't add new features. We're limited to changing values for existing properties. Red to blue, 1 to 0, false to true sort of things
To add to that, your storage contents only exist in the save file. NMS mods can't directly access data in the save file.

The most likely problem is you have it one folder too deep. Does the mod folder have a bunch of numbers at the end of the name?
@lunar spade before the expedition ends, go to https://cwmonkey.github.io/nms-expeditions/ and download the config file for Corvette. You can go offline and finish the expedition whenever.

So i see al these other settings in the "customize area", i just leave these as default if i just want it to be exactly how the expedition was set up right? its just there in case i want to change the parameters?

i want to put an exocraft pad on one. i wonder if they will work if scaled down a bit
the pads work for any shop, you cant use them to call ships after the first take off, when you just put them are good but they the prompt to interact is gone the moment you move the ship, then the ships on the pads wont stck around ofc. but if you add exocraft summon pads some are able to use and summon stuff like inside the anomaly. but if you want to use something on the field of a planet works great somtimes...
i just tried with the bike, i had to delete the pad as it was in the middle of the deck just temporarily. the prompt for the bike higher than normal, but i was able to get in and drop down to the ground

It's just the mod load order, with a "disableAllMods" at the top
deleting it makes the game regenerate it on startup
which by default sets DisableAllMods to false, as well as reorganizes the load order in a way that should work
though load order is not very important for NMS mods

Anyone else had an issue with world generation mods, where it would vanish your existing settlements?
Are you talking about terrain gen (ground) or something else?
I just installed Terra Firma 3, and it made my settlement vanish, its waypoint relocated to another undeveloped settlement on the same planet.
The weird thing was, I could still see the A-class settlement in the remote interface, and couldnt claim the other undeveloped settlement because "Already supervisior of settlement on planet X"

It's supposed to make things better, but made a mess of existing structures
Removing the mod restored things to normal, but not sure I trust mods with terrain if thats the result
First, Terra Firma 3 isn't updated for 6.06
If you read the description, it will tell you about what happens with settlements and bases.
Bases and settlements have location based on terrain. Terrain changes, locations relative to terrain change.

I do sometimes play in multiplayer, and was wondering why things were so weird earlier this afternoon with the random player i was with

Not sure what you mean by "trust", but that's just how things work when a change like terrain is made.

I supposed I didnt fully understand how the mods interacted with NMS. My assumption was it was a terrain generation mod, affecting how new terrain generated, not affecting all terrain, and affecting players with/without the mod disparately.
I assumed that it would only change planets that hadn't been discovered, or would intelligently work with existing points of interest in how the terrain is presented
ah yeah, no such thing a "new" or "old" terrain, just how the game works. A planet is generated from scratch when you visit it, regardless of if you or anyone else has been there before. Normally it will be the same because the planet's seed and the generation settings are the same. If you mod the generation settings, things will be different
Not how anything in the game works. If a mod affects X, then it affects all X. Game makes no differentiation between discovered and undiscovered. They all get their marching orders from the single terrain file for the game.

I could live with both of those side effects, if it didnt mess up multiplayer interaction
from what I saw, the player I was with was interacting with different levels of terrain than I was, so he was floating/underground randomly

How does it work exactly?
Just creating a MODS folder within the GAMEDATA folder, then placing extracted mod folders within that (and making sure they're not buried a subfolder deep) #nms-modding message

Mod folders should have a folder structure within them that resembles the game's file structure, if they have an extra folder between them and the MODS folder then they will not be read

Realistic Space - Elite Dangerous Edition might be what you're looking for with pirates, its supposed to make space combat harder without increasing spawns

Found a "defaultshipbase" file and got bored and manually converted it into an actual base... this is how they made the snap points for landing gear...
I'd do the same thing for the emergencyshipbase but we've all seen at least one person's corvette turn into that tiny nothing-ship

Now that I have ended the expedition and returned to my main save, removed my stuff from the expedition terminal and copied my multitool/ship, do i just fire up the game like normal in online mode and the game will automatically replace the JSON file, or do i have to manually do somtrhing here? PS, super stoked to be able to go back and run some of th eones i missed back when my kid was little and i had no time for gmaing. I don't think i get to do like 3-5 or somthing, i missed th efirst cpl as well but the have rerun a few over the yrs. so THANKS AGAIN, I salute you !!! 🫡

There are two main save editors that everybody uses, both do the same things #nms-modding message
They're both fine. You can also just unlock all the old expedition rewards easily without a save editor. You also have the option of "earning" the unlock by playing the expedition offline.

Anyone have reccomendations for general quality of life mods that dont drastically alter the vanilla experience?
I have silent refiners, better clouds, in-atmo hover, fast text, and better pets, but looking for anything that makes things better without drastically altering the game structure, like how terrain mods make multiplayer wonky
Mods are a highly subjective thing. What you may like, others would hate and vice versa. You are much better off just looking through yourself and deciding what YOU want and works for you. https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/newrecently
..and terrain mods do not make multiplayer wonky. MP works the same with or without terrain mods. 1) All NMS mods are local. As they change the game data files, only those with a particular mod will have the effects of that mod. 2) HelloGames is very minimalist with their MP data sync, just about only location data, seeds, and object ids.
I found that when trying a couple terrain generation mods, it made multiplayer positioning way off. I would see drastic craters/mohntains/etc and the others would see vanilla terrain, and some mission objectives were bugged because the didn’t spawn for me
Probably did spawn for you, but was based on the spawn location for the session host, so for you was buried in a terrain feature. This is not a bug, it's how the game works. Locations are based in the coordinates for the host, which is then synced to the other joined players. When grouping, it's always recommended to either all be running the same mods or if not possible, then with no mods at all. Else people will be experiencing things differently.
also is it safe/possible to change a save to abandoned galaxy? im upset that the adrift exp save became non abandoned after converting
They didn't have abandoned mode at the time

I did notice the terrain objective difference issue, but the specific bug I encountered was an Anomaly mission to destroy flora. We had to find a Travellers grave first, and that grave didn’t spawn for my companion, and I was able to interact with it, but it gave me nanites/mods like a normal grave instead.

Leaving the group caused it to work properly again, which was also strange

For those looking to really go nuts with their corvette decorations and customizations, I recommend "Exosolar's and Babs' Beyond Base Building" https://www.nexusmods.com/nomanssky/mods/1096
It allows rotation, resizing, and recoloration of every normal base decoration that ordinarilly cannot be placed on a corvette, and is fully compatible with multiplayer
so even if you place something whack like a landing pad on your corvette, itll be part of the corvette
and other players without the mod will see it as normal, and if you uninstall the mod it'll still maintain rotation

Finally getting around to adding some vanilla-friendly(-ish?) mods for offline play. Using Expedition and Twitch unlocks, Replay Expeditions, and Enjoyable Quicksilver (possibly Quicksilver Missions too? Not sure yet...)
Just wondering if anyone knows if these mods are only mildlty version specific (v6.x = safe with v6.05.2), or if it's kind of a "get em while they're hot" thing - where you would want to download them immediately after a fresh update along with the current NMS release?
EXML are quite safe. MBIN are moderately to highly version specific. You can read a bit more detail in the modding after 558 document pinned in this channel.

Ah thank you. I know Enjoyable QS and QS Missions are LUA+MBIN. Replay Expeditions is a .json file drop-in (which might be equivalent to XML??). And Unlock Expedition Rewards was an edit in appdata... Looks like I may have some research to do then.
I would assume the Unlock Expedition Rewards at the very least is universal to some extent.

That being said....nobody can give you 100% that anything will or won't work between versions. Not up to the playing or modding community. Solely based on what HelloGames changes between versions. They change something in the game files, depending on the nature of the changes, could break mods which use those game files.
ONLY should combine if conflicting MBINs. Again this means that the final output files in the mod folder are .MBIN (certain files cannot be .EXML patch files).
In Lua scripts, files have to be referenced as .MBIN, as that's the format all game files are in within the game .paks, so cannot use that as an indicator.
Ah I see. That gives me a modding strategy then, as I'm trying to set up a stable offline install. I'll do trial and error with what files I compiled (hopefully all v6.05.2 compatible at that time), then maybe go for the "get it while it's hot" method if something is wonky lol. And tiptoe around with the Enjoyable QS / QS Missions stuff.
Replay Expeditions isn't technically what I would call a mod (not disparaging it, just a pedantic clarification). I think it tends to survive updates fairly well and isn't too difficult to update when it needs it. For unlocking expedition rewards, I would suggest either Consumerism if you want to buy the stuff, or the "Unlock x" mods by Babscoole. Messing with saves is more dangerous than modding.
Yeah it's just a cached configuration file hack. Tricking the game into thinking there's an expedition running.
anyone experienced with the save editor? I tried exporting and importing a ship I made so that I could have a second version to edit and work on but it doesn't show up in-game

You should not consult AI for complicated issues. Here are the clauses they would likely use to ban people for modding, if they wanted to, which they don't.

amumuss is easy ti install. dl the zip, and put the contents in an Amumss specific folder on C: and thats it. dl the rectum zip , unzip and put the file in amuss, the folder should be listed in the rectum page. then run the buildmod.bat and thats pretty much it.

Gumsk is working on it, but like many of his TEXTURE mods, the TEXTUREs most probably need to be redone, due to changes HG made earlier in the year. Gumsk has lots of mods like this, so hundreds of TEXTURE files to redo from scratch.

Why are you running them all through like that? Only need to run a script through if a) mod needs to be updated and either you're impatient waiting for the author to do so or author has abandoned the mod. b) mods need to be combined due to conflicts. The only comflicts would be two or more mods, which contain the same .MBIN files in their mod folders.

Well, now up to you to go through said report to find the details for the warnings and notices and remediate if you so choose. In general, notices can be safely ignored. Warnings, on the other hand, depending on the exact nature (which will be in the report and log), often times indicate the end result mod will be broken, fully or partially.
Extract the vanilla TEXTURE folder and contents from the game .pak files. For whatever vanilla TEXTURE you want to change, check the DDS compression method being used, as your replacement for the vanilla DDS will need to be the same. Prepare to get photoshop and your plugin of choice (nvidia or intel). Used to be able to do edits with paint.net, but it's been messing up lately (think it's an issue with paint.net dealing with mips). Gimp can do DDS editing, BUT does not support exporting with BC7 compression, which about 75% of NMS TEXTURES use now.
If you know of another free option, which can work with BC1, BC3, BC5, BC7, and mips I'm all ears. 🙂
I used it for a long time too, but several times in recent months, had it save\export bad files with issues.

That's the way it should be done now. Only if necessary. Before the mod changes earlier this year, with the inclusion of EXML patch files, any mods which touched the same game files needed to be combined, now this is a much rarer event.

I'm looking for a playstyle that limits me to the starting planet (or system) and using the exo devices to gather resources and finding blueprints on PIOs and such. But for the exo devices I need to follow the archive computer quests which sends me to different systems so early on and that somehow kills it for me, if you get what I mean. I wonder if there are mods that let me find (all?) blueprints from PIOs without visiting the Anomaly or Space Stations so early on. I have thought about abandoned mode, but it gives me too few longterm goals.

I like the idea of a one-world-challenge mod as well (I've actually been working on one for Starbound/Frackin Universe on and off for a while). The Utopia expedition actually had rewards that were consoles that let you learn anything that you could learn from the Anomaly. You could start a new save on that expedition, get those stations and learn everything without leaving the first system. It did have an annoying mechanic where you could only craft within a base, but that can be turned off with some json editing.

Is there a mod that makes it so you can build anywhere in the 1,000 unit radius from your base computer without the need for placing an object every 10 feet?
Sometimes straight DDS replacements work, but most of the time you need to add a new texture and then edit the poster/decal's material to point to it instead of the vanilla one because of texture caching.
Replacements will work, but MUST use the same compression method as the original and has to have same number of mips, to my understanding.

That's the only mod to extend boundaries. Do have to build out a bit from center, but not every 10 feet.

I can't tell, but also haven't been building corvettes. Mods working in general though? If you bring up quick start menu and go into the emote menu, do you see the unstuck button? If so, you're probably ok. Would confirm mods are loading properly.

Mods are very subjective. What you like is very different from what others like. Search through the most downloaded mods this year and maybe look at what people include in collections a lot

You're never going to get full-on flight sim capability from NMS and a mod can't add new features, only tweak values for existing. HG would not do so, because it could shut out the majority of players, who are casual gamers.

I’m not sure. You could ask him in his YouTube comments. Currently he says the only way you can get his ships are through save editor on PC by editing the JSON. I didn’t know there was legal issues. You’d think if he didn’t want people using his ships, he wouldn’t put the file code out there for everyone but idk 🤷♂️

If you save edited your account to already have a reward unlocked, doing that part of the expedition again won't do anything. If you simply already have the blueprint of whatever you unlocked but never claimed it from the Quicksilver Synthesis Companion, I believe it will stay there but be unclaimable, at least that's how Twitch Drops work if you already have the blueprint of what you're claiming

Probably no change, as once your range limit is set, it's in your save, but couldn't say 100% without empirical testing.
Kind of, the existing pieces will exist and you'll be able to build within 50u of them, but if you are more than 1000u away without the mod, you will only be able to build within 50u of those existing pieces.
does anyone know if there's a mod that ever so slightly alters the threshold at which the ship's pulse drive will automatically deactivate near planets? because trying to autopilot around a giant planet following a marker is nigh impossible without dropping out of pulse 5 times along the way, seems like the ship just clips that threshold and then you're suddenly jolted out.

I believe each type of object has it's own limit, rockhopper wings count as "Access" for some reason, probably due to how they react to takeoff

Like, i know hello games tend to encourage modding, but this kinda break the fair, i mean, i can stack up trusters and get an insane maniability ship, ect ?

Only the first three of each type of thing installed count as functional technology, unless you also use a mod that removes upgrade module overcharge limits
As NMS is completely NON-competitive, it really doesn't matter. People play the game how they wish. No leader lists or anything like that.
Generally, not encourage. Modding is an option, but 100% officially unsupported by HG.
question, does this mean that if i want to make sure certain thrusters are the ones physically available in my tech inventory, then i need to make sure those are placed first OR remove and replace everything else afterwards to put them back in rotation?
Just place them first, though you may need to remove all but the desired ones first, finalize, then add the extra ones
ideally i'd like to just place them first, but sometimes designs change midway through and then my thrusters get all out of whack lol

Im new to NMS and this discord, I had a question about save editing in order to play through past expiditions, or to collect unique rewards, does that then transfer over to online play? or do you have to play in offline mode for the remainder of that playthrough?
added : sorry for the redundancy if I wasnt clear enough, but I guess my idea is to play through all the expiditions at some point for fun and rewards, but then be able redeem those items on a current online normal mode or any future online modes I decide to play?
You only need to be offline while playing the old expeditions. The reason is because otherwise the game will try to download the current one instead.
Once you're done playing any of the older expeditions, you can go back online and continue playing as normal, the game will have no idea you didn't do the expedition "legitimately" and will let you redeem them same as if you had finished the expedition when it was active.

NMSMB comes with a cmk mod script Add_Decal that takes any dds in the Add_Decal folder and creates a mod that adds them as decals. If those are existing dds in the game pak's then you could tweak the script to just update the relevant mbin's and not re-include the existing dds.

i tried copying my corvette from my creative save to my expedition save but now i can't save the changes and i get this warning and can't do anything

Well the corvette reverting to the "default" means that the base data was formatted improperly, lost, or wasn't pointing to the correct starship slot

Save editing and modding are two different things, and neither of them are classified as "cheating" any more than the options available to you in-game

Most mods are completely compatible with each other, though all mods last updated before Jan 29 2025 will not work with the current game

So keep an eye on the dates. Most games I've played are UE4, drag and drop or varying forms of difficulty for modding if I'm not file savy.
This game is simply drag and drop folders into the GAMEDATA/MODS folder
and make sure that they are not an extra folder deep (the folders don't have tons of numbers in their name)

I'm not super well versed on the specifics of how ecosystem generation works, but I'm seeing a probability value of 0.35 (so 35% chance) of the purple specific ecosystems being used
Those ecosystems are PLANTCATWORLD, BEETLEWORLD, PURPLEWEIRD and GLOWSTRIDERS.
oh, glowstriders is separate? that's interesting, i thought it was the same 'pool'
an additional favour, is it possible to see whether the the 'purpleweird' or 'glowstriders' ecosystems can show up as the fauna on weird biomes? i can verify the other 2 can replace the weird biome fauna
I believe glowstriders still appear in the Purpleweird ecosystem, just that the glowstrider ecosystem is the one that has a ton of different species of them

Those specific ecosystem files should be exclusive to purple sytems, though the creature types they use may be referenced in other contexts. I know the plant cats and beetles are obviously able to spawn from other ecosystem types as well. The glowstriders are present in both the GLOWSTRIDERS and PURPLEWEIRD ecosystems, but I don't think they're loaded by anything else and they are set to only appear when an ecosystem specifically calls them
Yeah okay, just did a quick search. The STRIDERGLOW creatures only appear in the GLOWSTRIDERS and PURPLEWEIRD ecosystems, and the PURPLE_WEIRD creature type is only used in the PURPLEWEIRD ecosystem. Both are set to not be included in any generic pools, so they should be completely exclusive to the purple systems.

Yes, most mods I would say affect gameplay on some level, but they can't add new features that don't exist in vanilla. Yes you can make new technology, to an extent
Is there like a mod manager for downloading no man sky mods or is it pretty easy to download and put in the files your self?
You basically get your mod, must be post January 29th of 2025, you download it, and then unzip the contents into a folder, which is going to be in your NMS GAMEDATA/MODS/ folder, if you don't have that, then just make the MODS folder in your GAMEDATA, and then go into Binaries, and then delete GCSETTINGS or something like that, and they shsould just work by unzipping into that folder.
Vortex if you want to use collections, or need notifications of mod updates, otherwise manual is fine
I don't think it has a MacOS or Linux build though

Okay so you make a MODS folder in GAMEDATA in the NMS local files, and then decompress/unzip the mods into the said MODS folder, if they have trouble, you may want to remove Binaries/SETTINGS/GCMODSETTINGS

if anything vortex overcomplicates the process of dragging and dropping folders and can fail at a few parts

Hello Games have specifically avoided "player can alter planet/system" level things for many reasons, partly because this isn't a space conquering resource empire game and partly due to the griefing potential tied with the unreliability of discovery services
im simply refering to shaped skeletal structures where you can add a base compartments and port essentially.
Still not possible via mods though.
@pine sierra You can probably just load a bunch of expensive stuff in your inventory and fly around. You can also get around having to warp with your freighter by making a corvette or getting an interceptor. Which expedition is this?

Another good way to find help is to just search youtube. People have old videos with walkthroughs. I just did that and it reminded me there are pirate bounty missions in pirate space stations, so you can go there and probably finish it pretty quickly.
i've never seen a pirate bounty at an outlaw station, and there isnt any at this one 🙁

Don’t think there is a way to alter the timers but I’m pretty sure there is a way to change the amount of items in the output using the save editor. I’m not 100% sure though so you’ll need to check for yourself.
Is there a mod that improves and "liberates" placement in Corvette buildings? One that "skips" the need to use elaborate glitches to offset parts by half-step, rotate them at a certain angle etc etc

No, it is because they are weaker hardware and will struggle to load many base parts at once
