What you encountered was a special type of pirate battle. They always involve a capital ship freighter of which there are two types, the sentinel class and a star wars-ish one. The odds should be 50/50 for these classes

I found that kind of fauna very dangerous. They move in group, but each "tentacle" or whatever it is (found different forms of this animal) is considered alone, so they'll attack together multiplying forces. They have insane defence (in my experience). They're very fast too.

I set up base at one of these cozy shells. 3 items inside. At some point, the 3 items were floating over a hole and the cozy shell was shifted over and half sunk. Now it's gone and a huge tree is over my base. It appears that someone else had been there as well - when I had turned on multiplayer (once I realized I saw no notices of others landing), I found a large floor under my base items (even the ones outside of the shell are floating). Except the portal appears to be sitting on the other person's floor.
