I only ever heard about that apocryphally, and given the extremely unlikely random chance it would require, I always assumed someone did a save edit to force themselves onto the same planet as another player. (I knew devs who had the format of save files back in the day.) I was a day 1 (PC) player, and knew multiplayer was not yet in the game. (Lol, and the early versions of it were very very strange once it came. "Things got better." 🤣)
I got really excited one time when one of my new saves was in a prediscovered system (itself rather rare). Their starting planet was different from mine though. (Nice of them to only "discover" the one planet (and the star system itself) before they left. That was long after the early game had been drastically changed (so starting planets were always environmental so the new version of the tutorial quests could work for lots of planets in a system instead of the old "lush" typically no more than one per system.)

Lol, I had to revisit all my bases in that save as a workaround for a bug that damaged that save, and in the process updated all the bases to account for the terrain procgen changes since the bases were first built. I had hit both the maximum base count and the maximum overall base part count in that save, so trimmed unnecessary parts in the updating process. (I used to radically overpower the base, once base powering was added to the game.)
