I wouldn't recommend surfing through the story, but I would recommend you complete it. Make sure you do it at a pace where you can experience and absorb what is happening, but there are so many things being unlocked by these big quest chains that you probably want access to before soon, so I wouldn't put it off either.

There are new quest chains that open up once you've completed the starter quest chains as well, which again ... unlock more stuff. But as @lethal adder said, you should also not stress out about this. It is a big game, either you want to complete it asap and be done with it, or you're going to spend hundreds of hours in it, if not thousands, and at that pace, you can afford to chill out about the story content.

So when you finish purge (which is 16 warps don’t worry about the core) you will not lose anything. However ||your current active ship, multitool and exosuit tech will break|| so my advice is to || pack your tech into inventory and switch to a cheap ship and basic multitool||

You can then use teleporters to travel back to previous bases and back again no problem

and by "break", they mean that all the tech in the slots inside those things will need to be repaired, you won't lose them, but it will take a bunch of materials to fix, some of which you might not have (enough of). You will not lose anything permanently (other than those materials) by doing that quest, but depending on your patience, it might be something you want to circumvent

So planets marked with salvageable scrap have Corvette class parts, and once you have enough parts you can make a Corvette ship out of them on any space station by the very back

The Corvette parts are marked underground like salvaged data

And unlike Corvettes, the regular ships have their own specific parts they need to be built

You can buy basic corvette parts at the corvette terminal to build a basic ship and then go to a planet with them to get more advance parts as basic parts don't trade in the corvette Terminal.

If you want to skip this step just go into options > Difficulty and set crafting to free to build a corvette and turn it back when done

If you go around cracking open buried technology pods and the like you can get stuff to sell pretty quickly

If you don't want to spend time searching for specific parts you can trade in excess thruster parts for basically whatever that's avaliable in the corvette terminal

Technically you can trade in any parts but thrusters are by far the best for garunteeing a trade

You can minimize the negative effects of core jumping by switching your active starship and active multitool to one that you do not mind suffering severe damage before the core jump. Alternatively, recall that you can switch to another starship and multitool once you arrive. (As well as summon your freighter if you own one.)

Galaxies 1-255 are reachable by core jumping (each # leads to #+1, and 255 leads to 1), and 256 is the only remaining legacy galaxy from before the Great Change in core jumping (before that, 255 led to 256, 256 led to 257, etc.) When the Great Change was implemented, the other legacy galaxies were (eventually) removed, and now map to galaxies 1-255.

Because so very few had even gotten to 256, my understanding is that everyone after 256 (which was literally like a handful of players) were remapped to 1-255. The details I never learned, and I haven't chatted to any of those buddies in years now.

It actually may have been more complicated and more covert what happened, which is one of the reasons some folks don't believe the legacy galaxies ever existed. Even now, if you use a mod or glitch into a galaxy > 256 it looks like a distinct galaxy with a distinct name, but the contents are (now) just a galaxy from 1 to 255 (including discoveries and bases). Only galaxy 256 is preserved as distinct. Core jumping from 256 now takes you to 2, I believe (where originally it took you to a distinct 257 that no longer exists).

Once you have completed the living starship quest, subsequent living starships can be gotten for nanites from a certain space encounter, so you don't have to go through the whole quest repeatedly, just the very last phase.

While there are multiple "core edge" systems, they are distributed pretty evenly all the way around the core: your "route to core" in the Galactic Map leads to only the closest one. But there are lots of other systems near the core edge, just not officially edge ones.

Not sure if something messed with that but I don't remember it sending you around the core instead of letting you jump.
The path ends at a system and it looks like you could jump from it, so you swap to your prepped core jumper.
Then the game says "Nope, need to move to this one instead." So swap back, warp to the system it now points to, just to have it do the same thing again. Very frustrating.
