You have to play 3 hours and warp I think 5 times before you can encounter the dreadnought in a normal system, and there's a better chance it's just a normal freighter. If you go to pirate systems you might get it even if you haven't played long enough or warped enough times. There are even pirate systems that will have the dreadnought every time you warp in to them

Outside of the expedition, what is the purpose of salvageable scrap that can be found on planets? I assume I can build the gravity gun to pick them up, but then what? AFAIK, the purpose of it is to salvage by putting it into salvage machines, like the furnace, but there aren't any on those planets.
