The reason I dont play permadeath tho is because I would never want to risk engaging sentinels... even if the first hour doesn't kill you you have to keep playing it safe, so I play long term in survival. I plan to get the permadeath achievement someday tho.

Ingame the Giant Planets are all the same size, so the Gas Giants are more of a Biome type if anything

HOWEVER, the Gas Giants themselves are different from the other giant planets because it's supposed to be the core you're landing on, and not some kind of Surface

and the whole thing runs like a fresh save for the duration-tho you can transfer some goodies to yourself before hand

Killed all the pirates > returned to station > says abandon mission > click on it without thinking

mission stages can take a while to update, HG likes to put actual wait time X seconds in mission files
