There is no "intended" way for you to play. There's a few story quest but other than those the galaxies are yours to explore however you choose. It's a game centered around exploration and discovery so the less time you have to spend getting credits, the more time you have to explore.

If it makes you feel better, I’m 312 hours in and my only Corvette was a literal shoebox that vanished into another dimension. I got so sidetracked 'smelling the flowers' that I think I actually broke space time, the ship is gone and I can't even teleport to it! For now, I’m just vibing and roaming randomly. Enjoy the journey, however long it takes!

I'm trying to do the substantial losses quest and it's telling me to go to the active lndium planet but I visited every single planet that the game sent me to and every single one of them it still tells me to reach the "target planet"
