Corvettes aren't a requirement so don't have to rush into building one.
Some parts can cost a fair bit and others only found from the salvage stuff on certain planets, but they do have a bit more flexibility than a regular starship.

Cobalt in a refiner, can improve yield by also adding oxygen or expanding it with ionized cobalt + oxygen but the last 2 recipies need a medium refiner or mk2 personal refiner.
