From expedition to main works flawlessly for me.
You just put stuff in the terminal, switch to main save (without ending the expedition), pull the items out and then switch back to the expedition.
Then just repeat.

Maybe it works the other way around, too, not sure though

Every object with physics can work fine. The game would only do physics for near objects. It's not uncommon for games these days to have everything being physics simulated. Have you not noticed that you can collide into asteroids?
Some older games use engines that predate modern physics engines and hardware, so they are jank AF.

I do game dev. You can make the entire asteroid ring with physics, with moving asteroids and collisions. it's not too challenging. The problem is compute power for so many objects.. Game dev uses a lot of tricks to create illusions. Only the bubble around the player and in view is rendered in fidelity.

Naw, the reason most games don't have physics like that is because they are catering to low end systems, where they might need to use software simulation.
At high speeds, the asteroids would render in a lower LOD and would not include movement physics for that sort of stuff, maybe just colliders for obstructions.
