Yes, you're joining an entirely populated universe.

Ok, I know this answer will disappoint a bit, but do not do the main storyline missions on MP, especially the first few hours (tutorial part) -- it can cause bugs in the missions and, depending on where you are in the story, softlock you, which would require a new save

Essentially how it works is one person is playing on their save, and the other can join at any time with one of their saves. Everyone is in the same universe at all times

And say you get home from work, and want to jump in and play with your wife. A quick jump to the anomaly and then back out will warp you to their system.

You can do a vertical ship. You just have to glitch the parts vertically and have all your engines pointing down

The cockpit and access ramp can point up and down too. And when you enter it will center your orientation like you're walking flat.

It doesn't point that out in the quick mission text on the bottom right corner. It's one of many missions where you have to go into your log and actually see the details.

That quick mission text at the bottom of the screen can often glaze over certain details and steps
