I wouldn't recommend for survival or permadeath saves, as these have achievements that could be nulified by a change in the difficulty settings...

I have heard removing most weapons from mech and only keeping one or two good ones helps a lot. He can't choose bad weapons if they arent there. I forget which to keep and which to discard / store but I am pretty sure the flame thrower was on the discard / store list. This advice is for the AI function only. So storing the weapons so you can use them when you control him is typically ideal.

Works better in first person. You need to see the planet's text box for a scan to count and first person detects it better.

That said first person combat is borked at the moment. So you might want to hotkey your perspective change to ctrl+0 or something so you can change view on a dime.

hey, just remeber, that corvettes count as a normal starship. you can have a maximum of 12 starships and corvettes, combined total. so 6 corvettes, 6 starships or whatever ads up to 12.

Just warp to a different star system until you have to save a freighter from pirates. I think it takes 5 warps if you never encountered it before. Save the freighter and then you get the option to claim it for free. You can only claim one freighter for free per save though so make it a good one.

Starship is like a fighter sized spaceship. Its got a cockpit but no other room, you most likely buy them but can disassemble ones you buy to get parts to make a new one. Theres about 8 or so types of starship aside from corvettes.

Corvettes are a special starship class that are entirely built and able to be edited at any space station. They have walkable interiors and function as a mini mobile base

Frigates are large ships in your fleet that you purchase so they join your fleet and you can send them on expeditions that get you money and materials. They have different specialties that help with different missions.

Squadron ships are starships flown by npc pilots that you hire.

Freighters are the capital and command ship of your fleet, functioning as a mobile base to a further degree than corvettes can, and while they start off seemingly worse than your starship at jump range, they can be upgraded to reach double that a starship can
