Find ships of a class you're interested in, with parts you like, and scrap them to get a fuselage, wings, and thruster segment. Then, once you have all the parts for a ship you want, take them to a space station, grab a ship reactor of the class you want from the ship tech vendor, and take them all to the starship fabricator below the station core

This is one thing I love with this game, by nature I like to do as many side quest as possible.
NMS also reward players who explore the game, yesterday while in a Dissonant planet trying to find a nicer looking sentinels ship, within 10 min I found 2x Exosuit pods and a crashed freight. The Harmonic Camp gave me 2x spaceship expansion.
Most of my Exosuit slots were unlocked for free, some planets gives them like plague. I have found so many crashed freight, I got a few frigate expansion.

I just fly very low and slow to allow the game the process the topography, exosuit pods, freight, abandoned building, I even found portal without knowing what they were used for 🤦 😅
The containers storage the game gives you, 10 IIRC, mines are almost all full with stuff I found, one is full of exosuit, weapon and spaceship upgrades
