you can swap back and forth between expedition and regular save at the anomaly, and once you're finished the expe your save is converted back to regular, with the option of taking a certain number of tech upgrades and cargo items from it, as well as the possibility of copying the ship and multitool you had at the end of the expe

it's not optimization, it's fact that game can save only so much terrain edit data

Once you fill that list, it starts overwriting earlier edits, making the game "forget" you removed terrain in some place

I use the terrain manipulator to flatten an area and then the game just starts reloading it

Also when you are in MP scenario and have other player visit your base, the game will aslso regenerate the terrain
