Prefered is paradise planets but it's entirety upto you.

Go to your planet you like.
Land there.
Get out of ship.
Use the map.
And it will find you a settlement on that planet.

You can have 4 different settlement. For 4 different races.
Gek...korvax...vykeen...can be found in their respective systems...

Autophage ones are invited only so you need to do their quest line first and gain enough repo with them and they will invite you....

You can also buy their settlement maps from their terminals if you have enough void motes.

@granite vessel for example, i'll put things in a very simple term: the less you invest into your ship hyperdrive upgrades, the more fuel and the more often you're going to have to craft fuel. there's ships and builds out there that really dont take much to get to it, using 2-3% of warp fuel per warp. out of a full tank, thats a lot of warps without even thinking about another warp cell.

less thinking about resources, more time for fun or progressing quests
