the planet i'm on is a desert, but it has these huge deep rifts that almost look like barren rivers snaking across the planet's surface, in my headcanon the planet used to be a volcanic one, but cooled down, and the lava that once ran through the rivers has since receeded, leaving behind only a mark of their presence

Fellow travellers, what should I do next? For the past couple of months I've travelled through 119 galaxies (placing a base and a portal at each one so I can easily teleport between them again). My intention was to make it to galaxy 119 - Torweierf and find a place to build a new home but now I'm wondering if I should actually continue through all 256 galaxies so that I can explore the full breadth of the game or if I should do as I intended and settle in some far flung galaxy far, far away?

If you have a minotaur and it has liquidator or sentinel parts, removing/adding them while it's in the water does things that the water doesn't like

Hmm, I've seen planets in regular systems with flat areas as well as big mountains on same planet. But wow do you have to thoroughly search to find both types of terrain. The big mountains are easy to spot, while the flat areas seemed rarer or only close to extensive seas. I'm guessing the terrain algorithm "smooths" a bit as it gets to lower altitudes (maybe negative wrt sea-level?) so you don't tend to see extreme terrain underwater where the seas are.

... but then I think I've seen extreme terrain underwater occasionally too, so dunno.

For the longest time I thought I’d forgotten about the planet where I initially got my first sentinel ship, then today I did a salvage quest in a system really close to my home system and I think the salvage site was the exact same one

All that and despite the distance I thought there was, I can jump from my home system directly to my spawn system when I thought they were way further apart

Funny story. In relatively early game I landed on an aggressive sentinel planet and decided to make a base there (I can explain) and when I was first fighting the sentinels I took out the walkers from on my ship. Whenever I did that they died but nothing happened, so I’d land and get out only for another one to spawn, and I’d get back in my ship to kill it. I took out 3-4 walkers before realizing I needed to kill them on foot for it to count, and I got a whole bunch of walker brains that day

Well, NMS have been continuously updated for 9 years now (For free). There were barely anything to do at launch, which leads to lost in player counts back then.

NMS now is far more than just space exploration. People are right that there are a lot to do in game now. There are also stories that you can do that might also act as tutorial. I'd encourage you to try NMS if you're into exploring the galaxy at your own pace, base building, managing settlement, or just take nice screenshots. Its basically a very chill game @unkempt venture

You could be Space Batman and exclusively take on Pirate battle missions, you could be a Space Farmer and grow a huge field of crops, you could be a Space Trucker and deliver items to planets, you could scan every mineral and flora and animal on each planet you've discovered so far, you could manage up to 4 settlements and watch it grow and evolve and celebrate your decisions. You could become a Space Pirate and go around destroying other Freighters and ships. You could focus on building the bigggest most elaborate base you can think of. You could focus on ship hunting/upgrading and finding your perfect set up of ships. You could focus on maintaining your fleet of Frigates and the missions you send them on. You could planet hop to find your perfect planet, your favorite pets on each one and earn nanites to unlock more pet pages. I could go on and on
