How to get started...

7. Finish the mission to reveal all purple systems on the galaxy map.

Taking first one was a bit of a mistake. If you waited for a few more encounters you would get a lot better one. Those freighter battles can randomly pop up. More frequent in high conflict systems

Own in what way? What specifically do you want? You can name it if you are the first to discover it but you can't prevent others from living there if they want. Though there are 255 galaxies and if you don't settle in the spawning regions and don't share your coordinates it is unlikely you'll ever be bothered. Hell most galaxies are pretty much uninhabited by players...most are in 4 or 5 of the galaxies so there's plenty of room out there to have your own personal space.

Settlements are a great place to build a base upon if you like being around people and want to feel like living in a town

Not necessarily their intended function but not worth disregarding the whole thing just because it can't produce good things

I think gBase Boundaries will let you place bases closer to settlements, but noone has tried and told me.

If you have storage containers installed on your freighter you can get items from it and use them to craft in your inventory, but only if freighter is in your system

Frigate missions are less than uninteresting to me, as well.

I use them to summon exocraft wherever, but that's about it.

You don't have to make a giant base in it, it's up to you to decide what you do with your freighter, but if you use it for cargo and summoning then you care about it enough
