Knock the engines first, or shields and then engines works too. Damaging it makes it flee

When it surrenders after you take out the engines kill it, the upgrade it gives is usually better than the cash or pirate freighter

For normal battles yes, I believe pirate freighters can sometimes be encountered without that wait for a guaranteed spawn at 3 hours 5 warps but I'm not certain on that

My only complaint is the tendency for the developers to design these expeditions with rewards at later stages of the expedition which completely resolve the challenges of earlier expedition stages, making it unintuitive for someone that just likes to do it in the order it is presented.

There are rewards you get that are so helpful in resolving challenges at earlier stages of the expedition, and later on that there are parts of the expedition not even worth trying until you're two full stages ahead of them. If you do go through the pain of (for example crafting your own tech) you'll find that very tech is given to you free two stages of the expedition later and kick yourself

I just don't like the design of expedition rewards that appear deliberately disordered and unintuitive for a linear storied adventure. Forcing me to jump between expedition stages to avoid wasting my time pulls me out of the immersion and forces me to approach the expedition like it's a check list and not an adventure.

For me, I start an expedition and I get hints of the first time I played NMS. I look at each expedition as an opportunity to look at the universe from another perspective. In a way, that's what they are offering when they expand the universe and technologies - So it makes the expedition that much more entertaining because I get to see new things that aren't just new because the universe is 18 quintillion planets large.
