Modding them is still extremely buggy, though.

I see all these amazing designs.... And I can't get my landing gears evenly aligned at all. The building mode is a bit finicky.

If you go in base building mode, you can toggle the snap mode. I can't place anything when not in snap mode. You can switch between the modes when building the ship.

I'm in snap mode, but I'm finding the landing gears are snapping different distances from the sides of the ship so they're not quite even.

Before you enter the ship construction mode, make sure in your base build mode it’s set to snap, then you can easily align the landing gear

Well I would not say its any special tricks, plus i don't really remember. I placed walkways and then the other pieces, then remoeved the walkway and placed some more stuff. Placing things within things seemed to me to be easy, just a bit tricky to get the right thing in the exact right place. :)
