the main thing is just reach enough tokens in order to buy the stuff u wanna get
u can do it by ||e.g. playing various minigames e.g. fishing, purchasing tokens directly (not recommended unless u really have a lot of cash to throwaway), or gambling.

people often: win #1 in the display contest (which is not super difficult, follow the wiki) in the fair, get 1000 tokens, which u can then use a starting fund, gamble (always choose green, gamble like 1/3 of what u have everytime) and save up to reach the goal amount u need

what fishing level are you at, the iridium rod allows you to equip e.g. trap bobber which slows fish from escaping

ah u can buy that at level 6. other than that, if u e.g. eat sea jelly or say trout soup/other food that give u fishing buffs, it can temporarily boost ur fishing level by a bit and that increases the size of ur fishing bar

using e.g. deluxe bait also increases the size of ur fishing bar

collecting products from fish ponds, or using crab pots, these also passively/slowly increase fishing xp
