the best part about SDV is you can play how you want and go at your own pace
no need to make 81 million in your first year like one guy did

and for your first winter, depending on how much youve progressed id suggest using that time to prepare for the next year though it is also optional but preparing during winter is useful for your next year

green rain happens once per year during summer, its pretty good if you want to get your foraging up since a ton of bushes and trees spawn around the map

pretty much exactly where you are, they arent in town everyday like the travelling merchant although it is random rather than on certain days of the week
although nothing is really random in this game, most of the 'random' stuff is tied to the seed

you're better off just mining normally tbh so you can get stone while also getting other stuff!
