Attach it to a fiberglass rod or better and you'll catch mostly flounder

||Speed and Luck buffs, you can trade Diamond for Triple shots, and Rubies for Spicy eel at the desert trader

Bombs. Use bombs more than pickaxe if you can. Blow up big groups of rocks to find more ladders (and thus shafts) quicker.

Always take shafts. The deeper you can get quick, the better

Non-buff food for healing. Salads, Cheese, Purple shrooms.

PAUSE THE GAME. Stop panicing when you have enemies on you. Stop trying to scramble scroll to your food/bombs/stairs. Pause the game and select/move items from there (if you're in multiplayer, this won't work, instead you suffer)

Plan to do a SC run ahead of time. Take some Omni-geodes to the desert and buy some Desert totems so you can go as early as possible||

There really isn't a 'spot' for forage. It just spawns around the map.
The best practice for foraging is to just wait until Friday or Saturday to do it, because forage 'resets' on Sundays (all current forage gets deleted to then start re-spawning)
