In a way, yes. Professions do improve money making. But Willy sells rods that allow fishing to be easier and better.

Standard, Forest or || Meadowlands ||Farm are all wonderful for beginners. Pay some attention to the tv, lots of useful stuff in there. Potatoes are good crops to begin with, fishing is pretty profitable once you get the jist of it, if you are struggling get a training rod.
this game is about exploration more than anything else so try not to look up too many things and enjoy the ride

You can turn vegetables into pickes or juice and fruits into wine or jelly, corn can be turned into oil, wheat can be turned into flour etc. Lots of machines to process your crops, makes them much more valuable too, most of the time

There are tons of artisan machines in the game, its really fun. Not nearly to the same extent as Factorio, but there are still lots of things to play around with.
