what helped me when i started out was to keep my beginning farming plot smaller so it was more managable.
don't sell everything you get from farming, fishing, mining, etc. you'll need it for the CC or for help wanted quests. sell at the end of the season
keep forage on you for extra energy/replenishing health! it helps a lot when first starting in the mines, especially before you have enough gold for salads and such from gus.
start on friendship when you meet people for the first time, talk to them and give them some gifts. (in spring, flowers work the best)
