You can also craft basic fertilizer which helps a lot. Sell the gold/silver quality pumpkins to afford the new seeds and jar the rest, for example

Cranberries, while good, are a bit overrated because most people don't really consider the cost of seeds.

If you have enough money to buy enough seeds to fill your designated farm area, cranberries are good. If you're going to Pierre's to spend all your money, pumpkins are better, since you'll be able to buy more than twice as many at the start of fall.
