but the hardwood is gonna be from mahogany seeds from the hardwood stumps/slimes in there, and they respawn daily

You could, though seeds don't actually even start spawning into the world until Foraging Lv1 (so there won't be any to shake from trees at the very start). So your first several trees won't drop seeds at all, and then it costs 19 energy to chop a tree that generates 0-2 seeds of its type. With an average of 1 seed per tree and 3 seeds to produce a field snack, that's 57 energy spent to recover... 45 energy.

This can partially rebate the energy cost to chop the trees, at the cost of not being able to replant the trees...

For earlygame energy, try to reach Lv4 foraging by Salmonberry Season. For each fourth level in Foraging, you get an extra berry per bush. So Lv4+ Foraging gets you twice as much.
On my current playthrough, I got so many berries from the first year's spring that they lasted me until the next year's salmonberry season

I know this because I used bombs in a certain location with trees in it... and came back to that location to bomb it again a few weeks later. Several of the trees fell over with the first bomb I planted on that second session, which would not otherwise be possible
