Each villager has loved, liked, neutral, disliked and hated gifts. Try and give them loved gifts when you can, and liked gifts. You can give them gifts twice a week, once a day. And an extra on their birthday. The quality of the item does matter. So a gold pepper would make Shane more happy than a silver pepper

If you go to each individual character on the wiki, it'll say "gifts" where it'll tell you what they do and don't like
