generally speaking you can play the game any way you like. if you want to advance in game, my advice is try working on the community center items as the whole 'quest' gives you goals to work towards
crafting processing items will make selling crops or animal products more profitable, so make sure you check your crafting tab to see what you can make. you unlock more recipes when you level up a skill

Honestly Stardew valley seems like a game that would be super stressful to play if you tried to minmax optimize everything that you do but it's perfect for just like doing what you feel like doing.
