for the sake of crops, not really considering how many you'd need. There are some specific reasons to use the rain totem.
- Marriage - The NPC who sells the proposal item appears only when it's raining. Especially important if you want to get married in Winter.
- Fishing - Some fish appear only in Rain, so if you're rushing for that particular fish for whatever reason, you have that option.
- Spoilers ||There is a post Community Centre event that requires rain to trigger, but Winter doesn't rain... and people often finish the CC in Y1 Winter||

Paths are handy because grass won't grow over them. When you walk on grass, it slows you down. So you can use the pathing to have a way through your fields without having to cut all the grass.

There's no hard time limit. You can redo the end-game assessment as many times as you need to if you don't get a good grade. So, there's no reason to stress yourself out over maximum efficiency. Just enjoy it.
