Hey y'all, hoping someone can help me.
Several years ago (like pre-lockdown several years) I played Stardew with mods on this computer (Windows 10, Intel G41 Express Chipset graphics card, can't afford a better one right now.) A friend of mine and I are looking to get back into it with the new update. So I redownloaded from Steam (which I have to run in Administrator mode to make do anything), got SMAPI 3.18.6 and some mods, downloaded and installed the XNA Framework Redistributable, made sure that the game and SMAPI were exceptions in my antivirus and firewall, attempted to update my graphics driver (but there was no update). I'm getting to where I'm circling back on everything when I google any other solutions.
I'm getting the "The game failed to launch: Microsoft.Xna.Framework.Graphics.NoSuitableGraphicsDeviceException: Failed to create graphics device!" error with some others nested.
And on my log, which I'll link, it's telling me I don't have Error Handler, but I do, it's right there in the Mods folder.
Am I just destined to have to play with no mods?

So the error handler from smapi is missing. Can you re-download that and run a new log.
It's not missing. It's in my mod folder.

Note if it fails to reach even mod loading, it'll say "error handler is missing"

if it's old enough, SMAPI won't get you that far and will throw that because it doesn't have the stuff

There are some instances where you will need to use the compatibility version of the game. Please be aware that SMAPI/game mods are not compatible with this version.
On Steam: In your library, right-click Stardew Valley and select Properties... > Betas > then "compatibility" under the dropdown.
On GOG: From the game's page, click the settings icon > Manage installation > Configure... > then "compatibility" under the Beta channels dropdown.
In some rare cases, you may need to use the compatibility branch in order to play Stardew Valley, but SMAPI does not run with the compatibility branch. Yes you'll need to update smapi and some mods.(if they require updating)
as for the second question, they stop working if they require an update but don't get one

The way I see it is you have to options:
Do it live - update smapi and launch the game, it'll tell you what mods require updating, so then update them. You'll probably have multiple updates, for multiple mods, for a period of time, and keeping them updated will be time consuming.
Wait awhile - Give mods a chance to update and update again, then you can do the same thing but hopefully not have to download/install as often. In the meantime, check out vanilla.
Some mods may not get updates, and they may be broken. If that's the case then your only option will be to remove them.
I have a problem strictly connected with SMAPI. First of all, I'm playing on Steam, my vanilla Stardew is working fine - SMAPI is crashing when I'm trying to open it. It's stuck on sayin "Waiting for game to launch" and then it's closing on it's own.
I haven't downloaded any new mods since last succesful game. Checked the logs - it's being said I should have ErrorHandler, but I already have it with full content. Tried reinstalling, same effect. I tried swaping Mods folder from my friend whom I'm playin with and her game works fine - still same issue for me.
Any ideas what could be the problem?

So if I have a chest next to a keg with say 4 regular quality coffee beans, 3 silver, and 3 gold, automate doesn't combine them. Is this like a setting I can change?
You'd need a separate mod to deal with merging quality levels, but even then that mod doesn't change anything about Automate so it's still manual

You can! Mods that change textures (animals, farmhouse, UI etc) have worked no issue with me vs a friend who has different/doesn't have one. It has to be something that replaces an existing texture, and doesn't add new content

your only options are the Win R "trick" as you stated, or %appdata% in the search bar

You unzip the download folder and just run the installer again.
if you're on windows, right click, and click the (extract here/all), itll confirm, then it'll extract all the files to a folder with the same name as the zip/whatever name you chose
just run the installer from that folder, dont move it anywhere

You'd think either they were Android or Linux, but it puts the file in a spot that I can't access. mnt/stateful and you can't change it.
Chrome OS is able to install the Steam/PC version, but it's running through a VM

hello! i changed the location of stardew a while back and havent launches it since. i had a LOT of mods, and i suspect thats the issue. i moved them to a different folder and uninstalled stardew (other issue happened before, fixed it, was gonna do housekeeping but this happened). i changed the boot location so that it should work, but when its in the loading screen after selecting a game, it crashes. what should i do?

no error message, just on the screen (loading logo is moving), then dies. i uninstalled smapi (for housekeeping) but i dont have any mods *in the folder. i came here because i was wondering if it was crashing due to missing textures/items? or is that not possible?

if it's crashing, you should have a smapi-crash.txt
even just launching smapi from command line would give more info
but I suspect you said "after selecting a game" so that means the specific save is borked

You have options if you are worried that the update to 1.6 will break your modded save.

Copy and move your game folder to a new location on your computer and launch SDV directly from that new location. For easier access, pin the new location to your favorites or create a shortcut to the .exe file on your desktop!

Rename the game folder to "Stardew Valley 1.5.6" and launch SDV directly from that new location. NOTE: You will not be able to play through Steam anymore unless you also set up the game + SMAPI as a non-Steam game method, so keep that in mind if you care about total playtime hours or achievements.

The game is going to update so the files in the game folder will be different
The game, when launched, reads the save files from the normal saves location
You do have to keep track of which saves are 1.6 and which aren't
as the 1.6 saves won't load in 1.5.6

Using Vortex Mod Manager with Stardew Valley has the risk of your mods not getting installed properly, and other issues. Consider doing manual mod installation or using Stardrop, a mod manager that was purpose built for SDV, instead!

hi guys, so i have both SVE and Ridgeside village installed. And every time I go into the game all items from both packs disappear, and when i use tool or pick up an item it teleports me to Ridgeside village.

Why is everyone trying to run with a really old save 
Anyway, deactivate SVE and RSV, play a day and save, then reinstall them.

hi!! i’m very new to using mods so i don’t know much about them, and i want to remove a mod i think hasn’t been updated for 1.6. all the mod did was add some sprites, replace some sprites, and add a few more dialogue lines. does anyone have the steps of how i could remove the mod without risking corruption of the save file or anything like that?

Mods that only change aesthetics do not need special preparation, but when removing large expansions, like Stardew Valley Expanded, or mods that add new items, you should to do a few things:
- Remove all modded fish from fishponds
- Remove items from the mod from chests and inventory
- Cut down trees/crops from the mod
- Make sure no important items are in mod-added locations
- Divorce any spouses from the mod (you can do this via console command)
When you remove the mods, make sure to keep Json Assets installed, and check that you have Error Handler installed. If you are removing all mods, play a day and save before playing unmodded.

need some explanation here, game works fine but whenever i boot up it says i need to update around 12 mods. go thru every link and download their most recent versions and i boot up smapi to then see only 2 of the mods update requests have gone away.. any reason for this? (tldr: update all my mods but on startup still says they need to be updated)

hellooo ive been searching the deeps of reddit for like an hour and i still dont know how to solve this problem LOL but i wanted to play the game vanilla and even if i delete the mods and unstall smapi and try to load the save it keeps taking me back to the concerned ape screen, after seaching a bit more i think its because its trying to load stuff thats not theres, such as the characters, does anyone knows how to solve this so i can play the vanilla game again?

!playvanilla typically if you want to switch a lot between modded and vanilla, you will want to leave SMAPI installed but set up a way to easily run the vanilla game when you desire
Do you want to play the vanilla game after having installed SMAPI? Keep in mind that you cannot play vanilla on a previously modded save. Please use separate saves for playing vanilla vs modded Stardew! That said, there are a few ways this can be achieved:

If playing the game through Steam or GOG on a Windows device, clear your launch options, then select play from your game client. See the !launchoptions command for more info.

Go into your game folder and launch StardewValley.exe. See the !findmodsfolder command for more info.

If a mod you use is not ready for release day, please do not harass the mod author to update - mod authors are people who may have other time commitments and cannot immediately update their mods.
If you have questions as to whether a particular mod will be ready for release day, it is best to ask the mod author themselves. Please keep in mind a lack of response does not necessarily mean the mod is being abandoned - the mod author may not have time to respond or is hard at work behind the scenes. Most major mods will likely have an update prepared for 1.6 on or near release.

SMAPI 4.0 removes a bunch of stuff that has been deprecated for a long while, so any mods that still use those will break and you will get an error about them (those mods have been generating log warnings about that for some time now).

You have options if you are worried that the update to 1.6 will break your modded save.

Copy and move your game folder to a new location on your computer and launch SDV directly from that new location. For easier access, pin the new location to your favorites or create a shortcut to the .exe file on your desktop!

Rename the game folder to "Stardew Valley 1.5.6" and launch SDV directly from that new location. NOTE: You will not be able to play through Steam anymore unless you also set up the game + SMAPI as a non-Steam game method, so keep that in mind if you care about total playtime hours or achievements.

Ok open steam library, and in the bottom left corner there’s an “add a game” button
Click “add a non-steam game”, and then browse, and navigate to your game folder.
In your game folder there are two exe’s, one is just Stardew Valley, and the other is the StardewModding. Click the regular Stardew valley exe and add it.
You might want to rename it so you know which is which, but you should have both games in the list now.
i found a folder named stardew valley and it has: contents, mods, save backups and smapi internal

You should be able to select them all and remove, but not uninstall them. Then they'll be left in Vortex's staging folder in case you need to reference them later. I would take this opportunity to switch to using the Stardrop mod manager, though. Yeah Vortex will collect your mods in its staging folder and then "deploy" them into the game's Mod folder, but it just kinda links to those files in the staging folder (which is part of reason it causes issues).

Actually now that I think about it you might want to zip up your Mods folder (inside the Stardew Valley game install folder) so you have a copy of those config.json files, too. I think when you zip it up it copies all the "linked to" mod files, and then you'll have the config.json files along with them.

personally I would recommend installing Stardrop and then you can add that as a custom game to load, then you can launch the vanilla game or a modded game
using the profile features
On Windows, right click Mods folder > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder

If you're using Steam or GOG on Windows, you will need to set your launch options in order for Steam/GOG to automatically launch with SMAPI. The SMAPI installer will tell you what to set as the launch options when it completes (green text). But without SMAPI, hitting play will make it try to find the SMAPI exe
unless you take out the launch options, anyway

few ways, can just run the game executable externally from steam (if you're using the steam version) and that will bypass SMAPI and then just make your new vanilla save.

by going to properties and blanking out the launch line

do i just delete the older folder?
like farmtype manager got an update, but the older folder has 6 items and new has 3
so i'm worried

sometimes mods generate files upon launch that wont exist in a fresh save, but I wouldn't worry about FTM
but just backup your mods folder if you are worried or want to have versions that work for 1.5.6

The release date for PC is March 19; console and mobile will follow sometime after. Alpha builds are releasing nightly. Check the pins of #making-mods if you want to help test it or get one last chance to update your mods!
because it makes it extremely more moddable, the code changes break a ton of mods
smapi.io shows you what ones work with 1.6, you would have to look them up. Although even if it says they work I would expect a good amount of bugs at the start
Oh! That makes a lot of sense, I'm assuming a lot of framework mods that are required for other mods might become obsolete if the update is adding better mod support into the game itself?

I think I'm going to be reducing my mod list aswell to the things I've gotten used to, so I can experience the new update as vanilla as I can. I'm just currently confused on how to know what mods will be compatible with 1.6.
Because on smapi.io everything listed for 1.6 says "broken" and it's confusing :/
Best thing to check if compatible is checking when it was updated on nexus and author's notes on the posts and/or the description

Android SMAPI does not currently work for versions of SDV past 1.5.6.39. We do not know if or when it will be made compatible. It is not possible to downgrade to .39 through legal means so do not ask how to do this.
Mod support for 1.5 on Android is still experimental, so many mods are broken or buggy. That's often something SMAPI needs to fix, and we may not be able to provide a solution.
so download those if you arent updating to 1.6, if not, i’d wait until sve is updated

Not sure if it was my mods or the fact that I tried to go back to a previous save, but my SMAPI has a lot of red error text and my game just keeps taking me back to the menu screen instead of loading my save every time I click it

it started happening right after I deleted my save and renamed the _old files so I could go back a day, but I am also running a lot of mods so I'm not sure if it's the mods or the save edit

I had to reinstall steam a while ago and it got rid of my SMAPI version in steam. I'm trying to put it back but I have to copy the text in the installer window. I installed smapi literally months ago. How do I get the text i need without uninstalling and reinstalling it?

Yes, SMAPI will clean up the old version automatically.
It should work, but you’ll have to download the updates for the mods. All the updated ones should be listed on the smapi website, for now you should remove the ones that haven’t so it doesn’t break your game
Hi! I have a save file that i used heaps of mods on a few years back, I lost all the mod files and now it doesn't want to launch in vanilla anymore. Is there anyone who knows anything about how to fix a save file?
I was working on uninstalling my mods on my Steam deck in preparation for 1.6 (I want my first playthrough to be vanilla). I deleted my mods just fine, but SMAPI kept not offering to uninstall itself... So I uninstalled Stardew Valley as a whole and reinstalled it. This should be fine, right? Or is there anything else I should do?

I'd first try installing SMAPI and its bundled mods, then see if the save will load. If it does you can sleep to save and try in vanilla again after SMAPI has cleaned up all the modded shit. (Or wait and try it after the update.)
I think certain mods may corrupt save files if loaded in vanilla
You’ll probably just have to start over bestie, heavily modded saves tend to not work in vanilla, sorry!
SMAPI installs a few helper mods automatically, so basically just leave those installed and don't isntall anything else.

(It should be possible to get them loadable, but if you've made use of a lot of modded items and the like it may not be recognizable in the end even if it does.)

Yeah, the problemis some of the mods were discontinued, I vaguely recall seeing a mod with white buildings? Yellogs I think it was called. Gone now :((

- Do I wait before trying to launch the game again?
- If I do launch it and something's not working will it break the save?
- In the context of Steam Deck, how do I make sure all udpates are applied to my existing mods, if applicable? (Not sure if they'll get updated/break as part of 1.6
- 3a Is there like a Mod Manager or something that'll just update all my existing mods where applicable?
