yeah, I'll keep trying - I'd already found him and tried to get to the summit 4 previous times, but didn't have enough balloons or inventory space to keep me alive to the top. Really need 2 x 3 balloons to be a safe bet that I'll make it to the top I reckon (at least on a solo run)

With climbing the mesa take it slow and steady and go bit by bit. Keep a bunch of reserve stamina. I didn’t use balloons at all. Remember holding him stops damage so if you fall just hold him. If you see tnt just hold him. You can walk through caldera lava holding him.

yeah I wasn't taking any damage, but every time I wasn't holding him to climb, the hunger was growing until it got unmanageable until my final failed run with 6 balloons - stamina bar was doing great, but my fat fingers hit the Q instead of the 1 when I went to put him back in my inventory and he plummeted off the mountain

Okay I did that on tenderfoot too. Not sure then. I’d say just look for suitcases more and eat what you can out of them. Also you only need to drop him at the bottom of the kiln so it’s just going through mesa and caldera which you can walk through the lava in so there’s should be enough food

First, like always try verifying your files through steam.
If this still doesnt work then i will copy paste my answer from a different thread from what we think the issue is:
A lot of people have found that once theyve loaded into the island its fine. If not try vulkan (instead of dx12). - Usually because dx12 doesnt support your graphics card/some older integrated graphics
If neither of these work then make sure your device meets the minimum requirements listed on the steam page
Another thing you can try if your cpu has integrated graphics but you have a graphics card, is going into your graphic control panel (e.g. nvidea control center) and making sure peak is set to use your dedicated graphics card

i mean it depends what kind of intel hd. Id check it yourself on a parts comparision site against the minimum specs. but yeah if its still like that graphics wise (even on vulkan) it is usually down to not meeting the minimum requirements...
If this is the case then you could either refund, or you could try and run it on geforceNOW- its a software that basically links you to a virtual machine to play games if you dont meet the minimum requirements. There is a free tier - game sessions are limited to 1 hour though, you can join back unlimited times for free but there may be a queue
