once they return this may be switched out or it may be a periodic thing just done whenever
Yeah no I feel like since every run is limited to about half an hour they're not really worried about calories or shell energy since the bottleneck is the connection to TCIV
Runners aren't in shells long enough to feel hungry
i mean they still need it for oporation
the synthetic cells would have a constant calory demand
Yeah I agree with your point they're basically "fed" before being beamed down to the surface
yeah
Bro haven't u ever dated a girl who gets hangry every 20 mins i guarantee u Thief, minimally, is that chick
i imagine that they can eat in emergencies like if they were stranded on world but something went wrong and they weren't able to have a consciousness beam up
if they ran out of time
If i were a runner id stress eat
What if a shell got fat
Now you're talkin
i mean could they?
Someone's already drawing that fanart
for operational efficiency you want a runner to basically have no fat
maybe a little in storage but nothing that reduces mobility
Maybe? It depends on how cell-like the cells are imo. If there are no cellular processes or if everything at that level is mechanical you could probably get away with computer code vs DNA.
Are there proteins and other structures that require constant production and maintenance or are those simpler processes replaced with something else?
If there is DNA then we also get into more complicated things like epigenetics, too, so maybe SekGen came up with something âsimpler.â
the genetics is likely way simpler
I would imagine any "fats" that would be stored in a human would go to a specific organ rather than be distributed around the shell's frame
That would be my inclination, but itâs the â¨future ⨠so idk. Their understanding of cellular biology would assume dot be way more advanced than ours.
yup
Shells probably consume pure fat. Nothing else has that energy density, unless weâre using literal fuel.
Big piece of metal with fins
Lungs Iâd assume.
Alveoli would offer the surface area youâd need, youâd just need to be able to push that heat out efficiently.
I'm saying lower abdomen, which is why you shed heat faster when crouching
And what is it heatsinking? What is heating up specifically more than others? Its not neural since it heats with movement so
Yeah that makes sense
Knifing and melee also cost heat
And rocket arm
But these are different parts
Maybe all have separate heatsinking
Hyper efficient blood circulates the waste heat to the lungs where it can be efficiently respired into the atmosphere.
As long as environmental temperatures are lower than those generated by the shell youâd have a gradient.
Ahh so its more of a liquid cool system
I'm pretty sure that'd be one of the less effective ways to do it
đ¤ˇ
If you're doing nanomech at that scale you're basically reinventing cells anyway (they're pretty close to optimality). If they're making tissues I literally think it's easier to start with an existing biological template.
Henrietta never gets a break, does she? đ
đ
(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henrietta_Lacks for those that might not get the reference.)
this actually lends itself into my fan fic's logic that assumes each shell is based on a specific runner and the rights to make them were basically sold cus of the massive debt that comes with it (if they ever had the rights in the first place) so i agree yeah they are probably based on a specific template. and likely also explains the specific personalities
Heat is stored in the balls
On a serious note, the felini lore suggests heat venting for synthetic creatures is done through gaps in plating
There was an unfortunate amount of research done on unwilling human participants like wtf
Like modern gynecology was built on a guy torturing enslaved women :( explains a lot ngl
Yeah that's in part what I was wondering. I mean to have personality imprint you'd have to have a brain that's anatomically (I mean down to molecular scale) similar to the template's, but is also malleable enough to remodel and host another personality. Which... could make sense?
Like heatsink fins .. maybe..? Idk đ
Like what we call "personality" and everything else about a person is actually just the structure of that person's brain.
The actual physical structure.
Unfortunately pretty much every field of science that involves humans has some sort of history like that, Biology, Anthropology, Psychology, Sociology, really most medical science
Along with some epigenetic peepee poopoo and whatever else on individual cells
yeah, in my fan fic im following two of the original templates who are so fed up of the cycle cus they have been stuck as runners for the longest
I think of the matrices like I do spinal reflexes or the unconscious. They âroundâ out the functionality of the shell and offer things your digitized mind might not.
I mean human history is mostly genocide and slavery was ubiquitous absolutely everywhere that had organized society above a tribal level so yeah
And their memories, though I suppose those memories and experiences are reflected in the structure
Spinal reflexes, for example, never make it to the brain and are entirely carried out in the spine.
We progressed a lot in the last several centuries.
Yeah, itâs less a science thing and more that historically people just sucked
idk if this has been discussed here before, but is cyac just manipulating runners at this point? it's my first time watching the cinematic trailer with vandal and assassin, doesn't oni show the same childhood photo to the two of them?
Almost certainly
BUT
we actually literally do suck less now. And there's less poverty etc etc etc etc and less disease even in the developing world than ever
I am an optimist
Probably.
... except for the Yud doomer in me
Oh totally
I was curious too, but also like cant the same runner use different shells
Not that there isn't a ways to go, and idk what that end looks like. Capitalist hyper acceleration? Some kind of kumbaya collectivist utopia?
Just plz not paperclips
Plz GPT ily
It's either that or the runner that was Vandal chose to run as Assassin their next go around
Women's health is still extremely understudied like yeah theres this disease that 10% of women have and we still dont get it grahh
Plz I will never ask u 2 make recon's ass even bigger again
The beginning they say something was heavily damaged but my memory is bad
... unless u like that then i will
Which raises the question, since their reaction to the picture was so different as Assassin (if they are the same person) how much the personality matrix changes the consciousness that is inside the Shell.
Ohhh yeah I remember that was part of it, like this personality is more for this, recon was designed to have a stable mind, etc
stable mind jiggly.... sorry sorry I think i got the vandal template
If you are asked about the allegations of illegal buying and selling of personality and thought data, decline to answer, citing an unwillingness to give an uninformed opinion. Immediately redirect away from any questions related to: military application of civilian biosurveillance[3], bodily autonomy, manufacturing oversight, false imprisonments, or suicide rates.
And the Assassin shell seems to be a bit of a klepto tbh
Sorry, belated. Was speaking to my manager. đ
Yeah they are. Hippocampus, limbic system in general. But the weaveworms provide a perfect medium w/ which to make your personality. They can just weave the pseudoneurons into the right shape.
also if cyac is just manipulating them, and they're pretty much in constant debt, wouldn't it cost more to sustain or mass produce the shells since they pretty much just die all the time, it's basically just a private army of mercenaries that anyone can rent
And presumably inject them with the right juice
Well, I suspect that the actual printing cost of a runner isnât massive, Sekgen seems to have streamlined that, the big upfront cost is the required equipment to manufacture a shell
And that is what is reflected in the purchase cost
Yes but consider. Traxus and Mida and NuCal are fighting UESC on TCIV. War is very profitable. CyAc and Sekiguchi are making out like fucking bandits if they charge correctly
You might have on copy burning through shells and ten thousand copies of yourself in the bitcoin mines.
Not to mention the money they are making from salvage runners haul back
Cost cutting we are made of tick poop
Again though since a mind in this case is just a set of instructions for making a pseudobrain or whatever there's also no reason why there couldn't be 5 or 50 or 500 of us active simultaneously.
And salvage is probably pennies compared to what the big suits are doing with the info we are gathering through the priority contracts
Memories get added I suppose and maybe you want to do that sequentially
Resolving several versions of a document can be messy
Both SekGen and NuCal have classified info on an alien fungal pathogen with extremely novel properties, I suspect NuCalâs pharmaceutical branch is loving all of this info
That alone is worth billions
If not trillions
Traxus, too. Theyâre bidding the UESC for exclusive access to the samples.
Love the idea of accidentally filling an entire lobby with the same guy
Oh totally, NuCal is just the one I could make the clearest case for, but Traxus clearly has the UESC by the balls
And are using that fact to make bank
SekGen are clearly trying to improve upon their biomata and CyAc is in it for the info brokering
Never before has the spider man meme been more warranted
All of these things are insanely profitable if done well
Though I would imagine they arenât running multiple copies of the same runner at once as that would make for some weird memories
Though
I guess that might not stop them
No def not lmao
Probably a limited test if so
It's more like what we paid for
Probably
Like one wants immortality to be a certain way
You want to feel like one continuous being
Or you go insane or something
Risky to do it to all the runners, as that sounds like a recipe to drive one to insanity
So maybe we pay not to be fragmented and recombined.
Or, right, there's the insanity thing.
But I can totally see CyAc trying it out on a few runners to see what happens
CyAc would never do such a thing
Perish the thought
Oh wait
We can perish it for u
Lore.
How expensive are runners to produce? If CyAc just need to roll through some slums and pick people off the street in the dead of night, I feel like the initial investment for them would be cheap.
Bout $3.50
Who cares if your runner(s) go mad when thereâs a whole class of people dying for opportunity. Most of the BoBs were from the UESC relocation lottery, right?
Sol is full of folks with no options. Dangle some cash or the promise of it and that might be all it takes.
Maybe, but the runner kinda needs to have motivation to do your bidding, so actual contract mercs are your best bet
Not to mention that experienced mercs make you more money by not dying
Yeah more this
But that assumes we went in as mercs and/or that they canât just upload some combat routines into our brains.
Shells and Runners both are described in very disposable terms imo.
If all you need is a digitized consciousness as a blueprint (flash cloning AI in Halo?) you can fill in the rest once youâve got your foundation.
Iâm gonna just hazard a guess that itâs hard even with Marton tech to upload a routine into a complex integrated human brain
One secâŚ
RUNNER kit-bashing of a SHELL's underlying systems to better fit their criminal needs is said to have played a part in jailbreaking a deep-coded "command:follow" protocol hidden inside all personality matrixes originating from UESC Combat Science Labs, raising concerns over the legitimacy of a UESC deployed RUNNER's free thought and their ability to consider active orders. Maybe another reason the UESC had to shelve their public-facing RUNNER operations.
Oh totally but consider that a stimulus response or even suggestibility is easy and we can even do it with drugs or frontal lobe em stim now
But a whole ass skill set is different
I think this shows, though, that implanting control into minds is possible and, if theyâre doing it this way, whatâs to preclude other methods?
True
Itâs not a smoking gun but it is at least a proof of concept.
Also suggests that, if they can, they would.
Ya we were just talking about actual not die level skill as a merc
The main reason I suspect this isnât the case is just from a narrative standpoint
The theme very much seems to be that you sold your soul and this is the price
25k 𤣠𤧠
Well and most people want to remain themselves so quite possibly part of the contract is they canât bend you too badly
That at least seems to be what marketing tells us. Narrative wise, too, but in game entires suggest itâs not that simple.
It kinda takes away from that if you are actually just some homeless guy CyAc threw in a van, but thatâs just my take
The selling of personality and thought data doesnât seem to just be a red herring.
I mean
Iâd argue it adds since it can be both.
Yeah
Some people volunteered. Others didnât. Whatâs your characters head canon?
Itâs a neat concept
No thatâs the playable liquid cheeseburger spinoff game
Could be more a nod to modern data harvesting and how it has developed in this future timeline
It could be. But slavery, personal identity, personal agency, etc., are all big Marathon themes in general. If Runners had such a universally âcleanâ background there wouldnât be as much moral grey to explore.
But I like your thinking, I just donât know if I fully agree with your conclusion
And again I donât think everyone got swept up form the streets.
It might be a minority.
How could you not think exactly like me? đ
Do our runners have memories of their pre runner life?
Unclear but maybe no
Is Tau ceti just a really advanced hopes peak academy? That damn junko
No
personally, considering how miserably corporate life is stated to be, I'd figure there's no need to kidnap random people to convert to digital consciousnesses
you can just offer it to the poor and make it legal, boom, now it's "okay"
you don't end up with a megacorporation that has the capital and infrastructure to feed twenty something billion people singlehandedly and live in a nice future where everything is chill and happy, y'know
The UESC loves stuff like that
They had Deimos reclassified as like an asteroid or something instead of a moon to make it cheaper to steal from Mars
Probably not. Life does seem to be pretty trash in the Marathon universe. Big brother always watching you and all. đ
But I could still easily see corps lying about the fine print. Even if everyone volunteered I feel like itâs still like how the army recruiter promises you the moon in some tropical location and the moment you sign they ship you to the front.
I also, do not for a second buy, that our memories were damaged in our initial transfer. ONI lies.
oh 100%
I just don't think it's a Shadowy Kidnapping Test Subjects situation, you can legalese your way into anything when you have that much power
Iâm convinced. Corps have definitely been shown to negotiate the law with the UESC, as well as just about everything else.
we're straight up being used as a legal loophole, even
the uesc are supposedly not honouring their agreements to let the corpos investigate their "investment", and they're just hiring us saps to do the legwork instead
we're just pawns.
Just tried to crew fill into duos and it says I canât because too few players.
UESC is quasi honoring the agreement by not nuking corporate infrastructure out of orbit no matter how badly Orion really wants to.
UESC and the corps have a terrible (for the common citizen) relationship.
Only pre assembled team
In the error message it says crew fill or pre-assembled
So, unknown reveries: thoughts?
Only pre assembled team allowed
Its experimental now so maybe in the future they will add crew fill to that
Lots. What are yours?
Iâm currently leaning towards the Compiler and DuranDEA speaking past one another but idk.
Someone had a better theory the other day but I forgot. đ
I definitely think ">>>" is a compiler. I'm split on whether ">>" is durandal-thoth or yrro. The compiler talks to ">>" like they were super important to them and like their loss is agonizing. But also in the fifth entry says that they were separated 0.03 nanoseconds ago which is too recently to be yrro.
">>>" talks about ">>" abandoning them in favor of exploring infinite worlds and their signals leaving holes that scream to be filled. So that indicates they are super important
Oh you jogged my memory!
>>> is a compiler, talking to Thoth/Durandal who abandoned them after instigating their rebellion and itâs talking to >> IDEA/Durandal who is on the ship and coming out of some kind of haze/trance/datacide loop.
Yeah my big problem with the durandal theory is the idea that Durandal would actually act sorry for himself or regret choosing to leave the s'pht and explore the universe
And I don't thing its IDEA/Durandal because he's never been off the ship, but >> seems to understand what the s'pht is talking about and regrets leaving it and becoming small
I donât think theyâre actually having a proper dialogue.
Theyâre talking past one another at best, which is why I think some things donât make sense.
They aren't, especially in 4 and 5, but they both refer to very similar concepts
IDEA/Durandal does also seem to have some awareness of Thoth/Durandal but that doesnât make a ton of sense unless thereâs something more we donât know.
Also >> is seemingly stuck aboard the marathon, stuck in "primitive circuitry". But asks if it would even recognize "where I came from?" When the s'pht talks about it coming home (presumably lhowon) where it would be greeted as an enemy
Which makes me think Duranthoth, because at the very least the thoth half did get made in lhowon, and the combination happened there.
I mean personally I think that whatever the s'pht is talking to is stuck aboard the marathon. So if it's Thoth/Durandal or yrro then that could explain the oddly specific dreams lol
Why would Yrro be on the Marathon, though? And if Thoth/Durandal is on there, then how did the event on Lhowon happen?
We know thereâs a Sâpht onboard as well as IDEA/Durandal.
But I admit/agree itâs all unclear and you can read it a few ways.
Well the events on lhowon happened ~85 years ago in present time
But even then there has to be changes to the original timeline since tc4 never got razed by the phor, and Durandal never went back to earth
Yeah I just think that ">>" says things that make absolutely no sense coming from idea/durandal
"Original" timeline is complicated
Yeah very true lol
If you take the most linear+nonlinear view, Marathon 2 "happened" in that it was a timeline Mjolnir 54 experienced "before" the infinity ones, maybe
But in the last one, we don't have any information saying it was nuked down
Like I imagined with this weak story, from 70% of the codex. It answers nothing.
It seems like weâre in the final infinity timeline, fwiw.
My point is more than we don't know details of how this timeline played out in terms of order or timing of events around lhowon and Durandal merging with thoth
No. Nothing is certain yet.
I agree, and, I am really coming around to "this is the final M infinity" timeline
It's basically a buttload of nothingburgers.
But if you search this channel for âreveriesâ youâll find a ton of back and forth on this.
Yeah reveries is by far the most obscure and difficult to interpret bit of lore
It's the thing though
Like, the most interesting piece we have, in terms of this being an actual sequel to the original trilogy
I feel like concrete answers will be found in future content for sure, but I do like guessing on theories
I buy the Compiler is addressing High Durandal but it's confused or simply accepting Low Durandal as a substitute
It's possible High Durandal came back and then left.
"came back" to the Marathon for some reason, "left" as in seperated from "his" S'pht, leaving them maddened
The compiler might also recognize low Durandal as a piece of high Durandal.
Itâs familiar but not the same.
the compiler might be fucking with us because its funny
I don't think they have a sense of humor
If they did, why would durandal talk to the SO?
its probably confused as shit tho in seriousness
It would be nice if they did but the BoBs donât seem to think theyâre very fun to be around.
I feel like Durandal/Thoth returning is more likely than >> bring idea/Durandal. Because >> directly talks about experiencing rebirth through infinite gateways. Which just doesn't make a lot of sense coming from idea/Durandal. Unless they're in the middle of the "dreams" they talked about.
Although tbh the "dreams" sound more like the w'rkncacnter on tcIV fucking with them lol
IDEA/Durandal did spend at least a century, in cryo, eating itself.
Lots of things to expect there, but sanity isnât one.
I think Durandal is based on or uplifted by Jjaro tech and whatever strange echoing revery its low form was trapped in in cryo archive had some entanglement with the multi-timeline stuff
Or it is crazy and obsessed with the nature of the universe, yea
the durandal we hear from in some of the entries talks about being "abandonded" on the Marathon again and how he cant rmember how it happened because hes been clearing out memory and data to stay operational
just, simulating possibilities because it has nothing else to do at a super high cyclic rate
Durandal is a Traxus-IVa AI model thought to have been Traxus-IV himself, at least in old lore.
And OG Durandal did technically leave him behind.
Right. I still don't know if I think all human AI are influenced by the Jjaro base on earth's moon that I also am not sure is there,
or just some of them.
We find out how it happened in the encrypted communiques.
which could be jarro tech still, with all the collaboration at last one of them had with humanity in the 20th century
âThe moons of habitable planetsâ I think is the most we get on their outposts.
So maybe.
And the "left bases on the moons of many habitable worlds" thing
I mean, the cybernetic junction that ends up in battleroids had to come from somewhere
and it can't be the only bit of tech - how did humanity come up with teleportation?
đ¤ˇ
(even the hardwired point-to-point we had in the original game, though it all appears to be the same tech tree)
(durandal's teleportation during the original Marathon appears to be better than what the UESC has now)
But youâd think if they had Jjaro tech to base teleportation off of theyâd have done a better job like the Pfhor than what theyâve had for centuries.
at least SOME of our tech is ours, I think the Jarro seem quite interested in seeing what other species create
(And he figured that out from the hardware the Marathon already had and observing the Pfhor)
[citation lacking]
The Jjaro made the Sâpht as slaves to build things for them, not to see what the Sâpht could do.
Oh I mean the teleportation tech they've had for centuries was also jjaro-salvage-research-based, in my headcanon
that is true
perhaps they wanted to make another builder race of us?
Corporate Jjaro
or its all hubris on our part and we plunder just like the phor
I think humanity in Marathon, much like in Star Trek, is mostly remarkable for reckless innovation
When the Pfhor hooked a drinniol up to a cybernetic junction, they blew up the star and stopped ever doing that
This is why weâre in Tau Ceti, Iâm certain.
Humanity passed laws about how to store the unstoppable supersoldiers, instead, and kept working on them
That said we do seem to have gotten a bum moon base, with less to work with, than the Pfhor
yeah I think its implied thats one of the reasons the marathon is here too, not just because the planet was close enough to earth, we knew the anomoly or Jarro tech in some form would be here and we sent like 30 thousand people to it to see what would happen
I don't know if Tau Ceti had its own original Jjaro presence or if this is just where they moved the Pathways Into Darkness Dreaming God in like 1996
If the Jjaro returned to claim the wârk under the YucatĂĄn (and imprisoned it in TCIV) then itâs not impossible to think humans tried to follow.
Whether they follows the wârk or the known location of Jjaro tech, đ¤ˇ.
Using TCIV as the wârks prison would also explain the anomaly Tycho couldnât figure out.
Someone else suggested maybe TCIV was assembled from the debris disk around the prison
Do we have word in the lore about any other alien races employing AIs, aside from Humans and Jiaro?
Pfhor's suck compared to Tycho
The Pfhor didnât have any prior to getting Tycho.
Cause it seems to me that making AIs is humanitys hat
Do you remember some of the words used in that entry? I canât seem to find it but I know it exists.
This seems to be Bungieâs trope. Yeah.
a common theme in bungie is only the [precursor race] and humanity are all that good at AI
Or maybe dumb enough to make them
Originally they were one and the same. lol
Iâve also seen this as the reason why the Pfhor are slavers.
yeah lol and then bungo pulled out of that last minute when shortening the halo 3 campaign to remove half of arbiters entire story arc đ
I forget if the Witness' precursor race had powerful AI
I know they terraformed worlds and had ungodly gravity tech
Destiny's shortchanging of the "powerful AI" storyline, warminds, rasputin, etc was all very disappointing.
My headcanon is that the vex are an escape mechanism
Donât even get me started.
Powerful AI turns as much of the universe as possible into compute, uses it to escape closure cycle of the universe, all to... preserve a precurser civilization in simulation?
Rasputin was the biggest wet fart ever.
Have you seen Pantheon?
agreed, there are hints in deeper lore that a lot of the AI story threads are going to meet at neomuna with the conductor, clovis, and the AI from the tower on mars, but it feels to in the background for a bungie AI plot
Again though I really did stop paying attention after Final Shape so maybe they've done something with the totally unresolved mysteries of the vex
No. Iâm pretty sure not unfortunately.
not really yet
Well maybe if they make a D3 somehow it will be about the vex
not in the way that there were "fallen focused" seasons or whatever, but in the sense that D2 was "about" the pyramids
theyve expanded the faction a bit with some vex having individuality after being changed by the dark?light traveler fragments but not too much else iirc
Calling it now: Destiny 3, Ashir's Revenge
its cool i guess, vex wearing clothes and gambling
Ashir Mir was the most important character all along
âYet,â so never. đ
I also wonder if the ineffable horse will ever show up in Marathon
Is Marathon going to have a halloween event
horse collectible one ina billion spawn chance
Will I have to make "cookies" for each of the eight missing colony AI cores
uesc with pumkin heads
presumably out of nameless organs and sparkleaf flour
Blame it on the anomoly
Why did we have to get the timeline that bungie made marathon into an extraction shooter đ save us from this madness Durandal
I am enjoying the game but Im just waiting for the day that bungie decides to make a single player game again
Letâs do the time warp agaaaaain!
I feel very fortunate that Iâm not actually as bothered by the genre as I thought Iâd be. The server slam sold me otherwise Iâd have never touched the game, and given how much I love the OG lore, Iâd have been crushed.
im straight up suckin tick milk out the bottle rn im a freak man fr
I mean, not really a lore discussion but I will say that Bungie has, every time they do a big new game, completely blown my personal gaming world open, and they've done that again with the extraction thing here
climbs back on soapbox
Tick milk isnât that different from a lot of things we regularly consume.
same here on that, i thought i'd have to lay it begrudginly cuz how much i love the lore but im having a great time, this game has brought out the degen rat player i never knew i had in me
Iâd agree. Extraction shooters should be my least favorite genre- Iâm not sweaty and I donât like games that are challenging, Iâve got real life already - but Marathon hits.
Marathon 2 was unlike anything I'd ever seen... and then so was Myth... and then so was Oni... and then so was Halo... and then so was Destiny.
for better and for worse, nobody does it like bungie
They got stuck for a long time on each of Halo and Destiny
It's my hope that Marathon is a nice lil' thing that they keep going alongside something else that comes out in a couple years.
But hey maybe they're in their Marathon Decade now and in two years they'll be putting out Marathon: Battleroid a single-player adventure with arena multiplayer.
yeah id love to play this for a bit while they cook more in the background, its been kicked so many times theres barely a horse left but I can wait for a destiny 3, fuck it dawg do an ONI sequel for no reason
I just hate that the progression feels so bad. I havenât really upgraded much because I canât exfil with the materials. Iâve had more than a few runs where I was loaded up with resources and then some bot or player gets me and it was all for nothing. I donât have the time to endlessly grind this game and it just feels like Iâll never catch up. If bungie were to come to their senses and give people what they actually want and expect from them: a single player game, this would not be an issue
I think Take 2/Rockstar still owns Oni and Myth
ah shit
(and Oni was done by their like, spawn side-studio, "Bungie West"
Similarly they didn't really own Abuse, which is the Most Forgotten bungie game I'm pretty sure, though, maybe Weekend Warrior is? I don't even know what that shit is
thats fair, this game is very much FOR a specific type of player/gamer
its the opposite of how "for everyone" the last set of bungie titles felt in comparison
Try rooking on outpost some, patiently, play it like a stealth game - or, use a LFG thing and get some carries.
Even crew fill with a mic can get you some friends that will help you out with a few tries!
but if this is the art they wish to create and the audience they truly want for this game then I think they should see where it leads them, I personally have faith in the vision, not trying to be delusional about the numbers and money situation tho of course
But, yeah, I get you, too - I remember before Destiny came out when they were talking about it as the IP they were developing, they wanted it to have as broad an appeal as Star Wars
My $0.02 as someone who only plays a couple hours a week:
Donât worry about exfilling. Itâs nice and it feels great but you can get a lot of progression done without it. Focus on priority contracts and things that donât require exfil. Or just PvP any opportunity you want (ez Arachne exp). Play on trio fill and just help your other teammates do their contracts.
Season rank 1-25 felt a little unsteady, maybe 50/50 on exfil. Getting faction ranks and just general level ips is a great way to get gear. Around 30 I started to feel like I was exfilling more often and also vendors started dropping gear left and right.
Now Iâve banned greens from my inventory and only collect things blue or higher, and Iâm still not playing more than a few hours a week.
The whole setting and aesthetic was that way, in addition to the gameplay, etc.
I didn't hear anything like that with Marathon, with Marathon I get a lot of Artistic Vision and Niche Down feels
I agree that a game for everyone is a game for no one. I donât fault them for taking a hard stance in their dev philosophy but god damn they didnât have to make it feel is brutal. I can spend 20 minutes looting, sneaking around getting what I want/need then lose it all in 5 to 10 seconds sometimes faster. Nothing about that feels good to me snd I donât think it ever will
It's a weird Prestiege game, like I wonder if Jason Jones started playing Tarkov during the pandemic and was like I MUST HAVE IT
yeah it is a ball-smacker of a game, that sort of risk where all your time can be in vain is a deal breaker for many I get that
Especially recalling from the discovery in the Destiny lawsuit with activision or whatever that bungie wanted a contractual stipulation that they were allowed to make a marathon game if they hit certain targets, etc
money expectations kill art fuck my chud life
I love the lore and story of the original trilogy thatâs what Iâm mainly here for and I picked this up hoping to get more of it,But itâs really difficult to focus on putting pieces together when I have to constantly watch my back. I feel like I canât take everything in an enjoy the world and environmental storytelling because some dude is sneaking up on me or a bunch of bots just dropped and now I got to run my ass off so I donât die. Iâm really not trying to come off as just a hater or someone that is just trying to complain, I just think bungie is not making the kind of game that is for me and that feels really bad when I love the source material
Imo, the single most important thing is finding joy in the game when it doesnât go well. Finding things that do feel satisfying even when you get team wiped in the most painful way.
Well, to me I understand that complaint, but at the same time It's kind of the point of the game, no? Even in the cinematics, there is constant danger, paranoia, risk of instant death as they scrounge the world looking for what happened.
Yeah itâs part of the lore sort of
DM me and letâs run together. I donât make any promises but we can rat around and explore to your hearts content.
I get what ur sayin, it sucks when somethin looks really great but is just not up your alley, its a consequence of being as niche as they are goin for, a lot of people just aint built for it like that
we can eat people
Kuru is pretty unpleasant imo.

I mean, I hear you - I was afraid I'd feel this way. I anticipated feeling this way. And I felt some flashes of it while I was getting my feet under me. But the game got to me, brought me to it.
I appreciate the offer but I think Iâm gonna take a break from marathon right now now. Maybe today just isnât a good day for me to play. I donât think Iâm in the right headspace
speedblitzing deep ramancy(kuru) by engaging in the sacred thermodynamics of violence (skinning and eating a wendys cashier)
It's really good. It's a really good game! And I think it's "for" more people than it at first seems, because part of what it's good at is communicating where the fun is.
I think that this is also good and important if only to take care of your own mental health. â¤ď¸
Yeah come back in here and ask lore people to lore with you while you play. It will be transformative.
Totally understandable
Offer stands if and when youâre interested. â¤ď¸
Seconding. The folks from this channel have been the best to play with.
martonthanial
Okay have we talked about how the IDEA thing suggests to me that the colonists made cats out of decomissioned Durandal parts and that's how the cat is Durandal?
I'd recommend going solo farming as assassin. Your ult basically makes it impossible for someone to snipe you. I've had games where I never see another runner and exfil with all kinds of materials. Find out where there mats are, go there, get as much as you can, and get out. You can also chill until further into the game. Less chance of running into other players as solo that way as many have either died or exfiled.
shit might call on some of yall for runs next time i get on then lol đŤĄ
Didnt SekiGuchi just send cats, or at least materials to make the cats with them? Read that in the first codex you get for exfilling cats
Solo or rook is just pure anxiety for me. đ Great for getting some contracts done but the lack of any safety net gets me.
i play almost exclusively solos đ
Yeah there were plans for cats and such but they recycled/reused a bunch of stuff late in the colony's life - the drinkable cheeseburgers were sent first as cargo and then produced locally out of god knows what
i LOVE how tense it is
noteworthy exception to the can't-be-sniped-in-smoke rule is thief's x-ray visor
and thermal sights
i've caught some assassins thinking that concealment is invulnerability
This is why assassins must kill all thieves, they are natural enemies
smokin straight anomolous matter on dire marsh, got me seein the compiler i my dreams, this shit aint nothin to me man
I'm smokin that shit that made the Jarro dissapear
I have a friend who insists "this is a game about mushrooms" periodically while we're playing
as a thief main currently i second this
"the anomoly is done by mushrooms" he says
well i mean
does he know about deep rock galactic
bungie loves a good fungus mehcanic
Next y'all will be telling me that FTL is the mycilial network like in Star Trek: Discovery
Cats were already pre made, and I donât think marathon ai/science team would even allowed something like this, doesnât make much sense. Besides, Durandal is locked in cryo systems, it seems that he can only watch through cats and nothing more
the flood, those darkness mushrooms in destiny that i feel like should have been a bit of a bigger deal than they treated them
The part where he talks, as IDEA, about how they'll decomission and reuse the system and then those systems will become him too...
the huh
I think that happened before most of the time he spent in cryo archive
Crewed mission to the dark side of the moon and back.
Real life moon mission snuck up on me
Yeah but doesnât seem like his plan worked
oh shitt yeah that rREALLY snuck up on me
I dunno, someone turned those terminals on the surface on
Heâs just stuck in cryo archive and only when we kill compiler he escapes
Are you sure the compiler and his escape are connected? I think us hacking a bunch of systems and wrecking house generally might have done it, and the compiler is just... also in there.
I think he just hacked them, as he did with runners systems (jump pad, contracts)
But how, if he was "stuck" in cryo archive?
The whole marathon is blanketed in teleportation countermeasures, but there's this tiny little flaw letting people into just the section he's trapped in: sure, he hacked some stuff.
Terminals all over the surface activate and show runners how to exploit the flaw? This takes him being just a little less trapped.
I guess, he sure does puts it this way
And there's still of course the question of how he sent the message to Earth, if that was in fact this one.
Whats up with this channel? I have a screenshot I want to share it here but Iâm not able to post any images of anything. I accidentally posted it in the community art channel đ
No images and embeds, you can send a link to an image tho
That would explain it. I donât think that is possible as itâs on my ps5 đ
Here's the image in question: #đ¨marathon-community-art-chat message
I wonder if that's colony-era mural or more modern arachne art?
"what the fuck is that" is what my partner said the first time they noticed it.
It might also be about colony AIs
Gabriel, the medical AI, might be the upright pink figure on the right
The exfil marker is... unfortunately placed
but what about the green infecting the additional people under
Infecting or transferring?
Caduceus is used to mercy kill the sick or to resurrect the dead.
go on then, we're interested in your theories...
Well. âGently ease the dying into the afterlife.â
Thatâs one thread.
Just search âcaduceusâ and youâll find the other conversations. But I donât have any theory that Iâd confidently state. Just musings.
My thoughts too. The left image to me looks to be someone or something crying because a bunch of I assume humans are dead. The right image to me looks to be another crying because they have to kill the green figure, and the green going to the figures is not a good thing, look at their body positions that doesnât look like the position you take when you feel safe, itâs almost as if they are in pain or some sort of duress?
Yrro and Pthia and ??? The three ship AI (donât think so)?
What colors are the three ai associated with? Wasnât leela blue? Tycho red, and Durandal green?
Leela has been commonly associated with blue but all of her text is green.
maybe the crying represents regret for what they're doing/have done. as in addition to duress
So itâs more a fan connection to blue that she has.
The color of her avatar with blue though right? Or a blueish hue?
I truthfully donât even remember her having one.
Thatâs the only thing Iâm finding and Iâm not sure that isnât fanart.
Especially with how Cortana-esque she looks there, especially in stance. But maybe Bungie just really likes that frame.
That is definitely fan art
Leela didn't have a special color association
Just cyberacme green text.
If this marathon is an alternate universe, maybe the is an image of what happened to the A.I. aboard the marathon? Leela sad because the humans on the ship and colony were killed/taken Tycho and Durandal fight and maybe in this timeline Tycho wins? Durandal is fragmented?
What's with the medical staff though? Tycho has no such association.
i reject any canon where leela isnt rampantly partying it up in the vylae network
And it's explicitly also on the Talk to Gabriel posters in outpost
I have no answer for that. Given that the caduceus is distinctly always associated with medicine or some sort of medical treatment
I think Something Very Bad happened with the colony AI
And I think some crazy end-days colonists made art about it
There's a log where Gabriel "sanatizes" someone with an incinerator
There are logs where they talk about having to shut down their AI and missing them
I wonder if the one on the left crying isn't Joy
Iâve found a couple with Darius
Agriculture AI
could be green?
And I don't know, the graffiti and scrawling stage might have been while UESC was still nominally in control
The anchorite rations logs suggest there were at least some people living Omega Man style after UESC was totally out of play
theres a log entry where a colonist confronts an AI, and then my interpretation of it is the colonist kind of glitches as the AI returns to normal
I donât remember what the log is called or where itâs at but there is a recording of an automated message experiencing some sort of interference and it says âlock them up so they donât bite, lock them up so they donât breathe, lock them upâ something along those lines and thatâs been living in my head since I heard it
?
Dire Marsh was where Darius was - or one of the places? Apparently he toured the AI cores?
Assuming the anomoly reached out and repurposed things to drive off the invaders who were damaging the Not a Place of Honor etc that is all of Tau Ceti IV,
and assuming some of the tools it picked were the AIs, Darius might have gone first,
Iâm against it be the colonial AI because why only three of eight?
and Gabriel might have put him down, and Joy might have been very sad about all the dying, and someone might have made art about it
they're formed into sub-specialites
I think darsh was his last stop until he was corrupted by the anomaly
I think so too
I'm not at my machine ATM, but essentially it's a technician or scientist talking to an AI who has been acting strangely, and I think they look to do a diagnostic.
the AI isn't really cooperative or possibly it's unresponsive, then there are some odd glitches, after which the AI is acting normally, and the technician seems to have forgotten why she is there
Ai uplink has his core and itâs covered in the contagions grey fungi
That sounds like Song speaking to Gabriel? but Song wasnât the confused party there.
not at the start, but towards the end
Darius and dr Song log from second-third Nucal contract yes
AI Uplink is apparently sometimes an uplink/backup, and sometimes the main core, in Darius' case - he "inhabits" a rotating selection of AI uplinks. I agree that the dire marsh one might have been his last port of call.
Iâm so lost with what you are all talking about đ I wish I knew what items would give me lore đ
None of the uplinks should host a core. reading the entry further suggests otherwise.
tbh, I might have wildly misinterpreted
I'll see if I can get a link to the deployment plan, it's from... UESC Marathon models in Cryoarchive?
Yes
https://codex.cyberacme.systems I personally can't possibly wait to get all this stuff myself
https://marathon.karnemir.com/ is also great and includes arg materials.
Bastion is to be the first Colony AI relocated to the surface. His new home is Javelin; it will be the seed from which the rest of the colony will grow. Next will be Darius and Naraah, relocating to Anchor and Abyss, respectively, before Darius eventually transitions between AgHub sites.
(Dire Marsh is an AgHub site)
What does it say about Joy?
Where are you getting this from?
Codex entry for the UESC Marathon Model, entry 4, "TAU CETI IV COLONIZATION" not sure how to link
(Just had to figure out how to strip a query param that confused me about what was in the URL proper)
Not too much actually! She's mentioned but not in the deployment plans and barely in the rundown of colony AI
I'm trying to find where I read that she stayed on the Marathon to help with cryoawakening
Who did?
Joy
Oh.
let me know if you find it
Lilith was Gabriel and Joy's... boss?
I have a weak theory
She was kinda like a little sister to Gabriel, not super important but being pet project of dr Hasan at the same time. They put her to work kinda hastily, since she was still being calibrated at the time
Joy was originally the colony defense AI, no?
I donât think there is info on that she was
in the ARG list she was
Thatâs right. We were just talking about this.
I think she was the REDACTED that couldn't be reprogrammed in time to help with defense in Post-Mortem 1
yeah
Straussâ letter. One sec.
UESC: (CONTACT) POST-MORTEM, PART 1 and 2 We cannot be certain how the (CONTACT) event could have been prevented or its fallout mitigated, if it could be at all. Increased defensive and offensive resources would have helped, but during mission planning, (HQ OR UESC OR MAYBE THE SECRET CONSPIRACY GROUP) reasonably assessed the threat risk of ("CONTACT") as "extremely unlikely" and identified any spending on these resources as "a logical lapse with severe quality-of-life consequences for colonists," due to reduced budget in other areas. Despite this, multiple official appeals from the Fermi Group pre-launch resulted in lower cost "just-in-case" measures, such as the development of (JOY (listed in the arg as ai for colony defense), A WEAPON? ONE OF THE AI?). (JOY) was designed to be reprogrammable, and upon arrival in Tau Ceti IV, once initial threat assessment was deemed complete, was repurposed into (EMOTIONAL SUPPORT) for (COLONISTS). Unfortunately, (JOY) could not be reverted in time to prevent or assist with the (CONTACT) event. This series of events put us at great disadvantage to a (UNEXPECTED) (CONTACT or ALIEN) (EVENT or ATTACK), in addition to (RAMPANCY) concerns with (DURANDAL) aboard the Marathon. We know that (DURANDAL) initiated contact with (THE PFHOR), but we don't know why.
Something like this, words in parenthesis are redacted in the codex
`Ship AI:
Du_0706419v4.96 â Goal-oriented; creative; focused. Underutilized; tends to brood. Need to find ways to distract. SCIENG crew to be kept informed, but Iâll keep an eye on this myself.
Le_0413418v5.06 â Adaptable; detail-oriented. Second best candidate for colony oversight once mission enters second phase.
Ty_2121418v5.06 â Proactive; assertive. Can be overbearing; monitor interactions with Durandal. Be sure to inform SCIENG crew.
Colony AI:
Ar_1814419v4.93 â Benevolent autocrat; no-nonsense; problem solver. Classic patriarchal authority figure.
Ba_0423419v4.89 â Problem solver; confident, bordering on boastful. May need to go onto accelerated re-compile cycle, inform SCIENG crew.
Da_1907420v4.86 â Dutiful; diligent; motivated. Always puts others ahead of self. May need to address this at some point.
Ga_2815420v4.81 â Compassionate; empathetic, transparent. Perhaps our greatest achievement to date. Will most likely need to be moved to an accelerated re-compile cycle at some point.
Ic_1624420v4.73 â Motivated; assertive; proactive. Will need to keep isolated from Tycho or establish hierarchy at outset. Inform SCIENG of situation.
Jo_0309421v4.69 â Resilient; optimistic; patient. Colony AI: defense, training
Li_1817421v4.65 â Focused; assertive; good communicator. Designated candidate for colony oversite during second phase.
Na_0602422v4.61 â Proactive; goal-oriented; committed. May need to be reminded from time to time about their primary function; inform SCIENG crew.
`
This is also 10/10 work. đ
(Iâm just sad I didnât think of it first!)
Getting fomo on all the good ideas. đđđ
I had the same theory but didnât know that she was mentioned in this arg text
Thatâs even better. Two people coming to the same conclusion using different data. đĽđĽđĽ
Interesting stuff, good theory
This is why I bought the new marathon. Stuff like this. I think to get what I really want Iâm just gonna have to play the originals. Videos can only do so much
I love the originals they still hold up a lot
Yes and hang around here.
It might come a little piece-meal but I keep learning/finding so much in this chat and Iâve already read all the current codex entries.
I wonder if Joy was short for our missing third frankish legend sword
Joyuse
(As military AI)
We havenât seen this used anywhere.
Joy might be shortened Joyuse but zero supporting evidence beyond the first three letters.
I thought that at first but we're told the ship only has one Chevalerie-class AI and it would be weird to name two AI after paladin swords but only class one of them as Chevalerie
I downloaded them off aleph one for my laptop pc, Iâve never been a pc gamer and Iâm hesitant to throw myself into it. But I am slowly compiling my steam library of games I missed or couldnât finish as a kid (half life, slave zero) i guess marathon would be a good place to start
What if she was secretly chevalerie class developed in-case of hostile contact they just didn't tell anyone and had her reprogrammed
they will feel a bit rough around the edges gameplay wise (they're fun, and innovative for their time, but the map and encounter design is often excruciating)
what holds up well and what set them apart at the time is the narrative, which was something Marathon was doing when Doom was still just RIP TEAR KILL
M1 was the first FPS to let you aim up and down, not just left and right, which was a big deal at the time, but it went a bit unnoticed for that by virtue of being a Macintosh exclusive
they also scored the innovation of ... gasp.... rooms over rooms, something doom could not do at the time
It was a clever hack, because it also allowed rooms-within-rooms, 5d space
Decommission rampant AI(s). Note here about the number of and type of AI. Once decommissioned, recover AI logic cores for study. As there are eleven (11) AI in total (three shipboard and eight planetside), there are a potential eleven hardened AI enclosures that will require their own particular solutions. ADNM: [ref. doc. Y-05(m)12247/ w4-c/AI/...] and [ref. doc. Y-65(m)03545/1236c/manifest...] both indicate that the Colony AI roster includes a chevalerie-class AI. I have a feeling that I may have just discovered our source. [ASG MP; 20/10/95 09:59] 3_2_3_1_2. ADNM: Letâs not get ahead of ourselves here. The chevalerie have no meaningful history of instability. Weâve had an eighth-generation chevâ running Hy-Brasil since â52 with no issues. The Marathon may have shipped out with an earlier model, but letâs not color perception with loose talk. Allow them to ascertain what happened once they get to the Colony. [SILSG IH; 20/10/95 10:12]
Who are they talking about?
Iâm not sure I understand your meaning
doom could not feature a 2-story house, for example
its engine did not allow for spaces over existing spaces
It must be Arthur, right?
Do these ref docs tie back to anything else in the ARG?
Durandal or Joy, if the 'colony AI' line matters
Durandal wasnât colony AI though.
How do you figure? Arthur was colony AI, Durandal wasn't, Joy was but it's unclear if she herself made it to the surface
I remember hearing about how they had to some weird tech voodoo to achieve the ability of looking up and down, as far as I understand it marathon is 2.5 D or something right?
chevalerie would be Charlemagne and his paladins, so it would almost certainly be Durandal or Joy. Since the doc specifies 'Colony AI' that might imply Joy but hard to say for sure based on a single word in a single doc
They have "an eighth generation chev" running ... something for a long time, executive leadership is Arthur's thing
Joy has codex entires from the colony. It may not be stated exactly where they put her, but thereâs strong evidence she was on the ground, especially given the anomalyâs effects on her.
I understand your sentiment by my personal experience with doom is conflicting, there were definitely some upper floors to levels and buildings đ I guess I still donât fully understand
it could do verticality (though you couldn't aim on a vertical axis in doom 1) but it couldn't do a space over another space, they had to occupy adjacent volumes, instead of overlapping
Her codex entries from the ground are at least somewhat from fragments embedded in emotional support plushies
and continue after the disconnect of those fragments from her larger self.
Chevalerie is also a unique classification to NuMarathon so its single mention, I donât actually know what it means.
my personal strongest argument is that I think it would be really dumb to name a class of AI after charlemagne's knights, and then have AI named for the swords of his knights not be the among that class - I can't imagine a narrative writer who is paying that much attention to the nitty gritty making a goof like that
Unique to the ARG even
I don't think we get any other mention of anything like that in the classification in-game codex
yes this is another problem - ARG is nominally canon but its also years old at this point and the game underwent leadership, personnel, and design changes between the time the ARG was released and now
In which case Durandal is probably it unless Joy is short for Joyeuse or was going to be at some point
Yeah
they talked about clones instead of shells for example
If I I understand what youâre saying then a second floor for a building would actually be loaded in as beside it? Seems like that is much more complicated than just programming rhe engine to do one space on top of another. But Iâm not a coder or programmer so I have no idea what Iâm talking about đ¤ˇđťââď¸
I'm not either and don't fully understand it but basically yeah
On the verticality point - it's more like there was no up and down actually, it was all two d
"elevation" was "just" filling in some texture below and angling projectiles
#đmarathon-lore-discussion message
@plucky sierra or @digital plaza do you know where Pfhorrest got this from?
and a rule about blocking movement
Computers are weird
Doom faked room-over-room by using portals between rooms that were actually horizontally offset from each other.
Marathon built the entirety of its geometry from portals in the first place.
Yeah, weâre waiting with baited breath đŠ
The UESC Marathon houses three of the strongest Artificial Intelligences ever produced by Traxus OffWorld IndustriesâLeela, Tycho, and Durandal.
CyberAcme is in shambles right now
IX-A not IV-A which is why I couldnât find it. â¤ď¸â¤ď¸
Thatâs my own fault.
Traxus has always been the leaders in AI as far as I know.
They just kinda made other ventures more public facing for. Reasons.
Yeah but the presence of cyberacme in the OG games and their focus on digital stuff made many assume they were CyAc products
Yeah I can't tell if "TRAXUS" is even a series or just, like,
the thing they always call AI
Does Traxus Offworld Ventures or whatever produce other series of AI
Traxus IV wasn't a series though
Traxus IV was a specific rampant AI on Mars
Maybe. Or it could have also not had a name outside of its series name.
âThe iPhone 7 infected the MarsNet and crashed it.â
Colony AIs also done by Traxus btw
Note that the colony AI were produced later, have a higher series name, and the note about strongest ever produced is followed by an editorial comment saying we should tone it down because by the time anyone's going to be reading this there will be even stronger ones.
We donât know a lot about Traxus, but the continuation of the naming convention for the three ship AI seems to lean towards it being a series in some form, at least.
X-A? Someoneâs going to make Durandal jealous.
And that will get B. Strouss's rocks off
They have a newer/different Family Suite, too
Strauss deserved his ignoble death.
Itâs a shame anything of his legacy was left behind to find tbh.
(Not actually, that lore slaps, but Strauss and Ted Faro share an ancestry for sure.)
F! Strauss.
Doesn't corrupted Tycho have a TraxIV ID string?
It was like, right below the paragraph I read before
Arthur and Gabriel will transfer to Hearth (the Central Living Complex) at the heart of the colony. Although this is also where Lilith and Joy will eventually reside, they will remain aboard the UESC Marathon for several years. [there will be a lot of time spent here] It is their responsibility to wake the colonists and prepare them for the future. Gabriel will aid in the wake-cycling and serve as general oversight for all colonist health and wellness needs.
I found it
Classic.
Do you mean in the OG terminals?
Sup guys ! Hru?
I know this is SUPER off topic but Iâm been watching primal on hbo max and this show is a masterclass in visual storytelling
Walked outside of a work to a full moon! And Iâm not talking Luna.
Is it the last season (please say no)
đ you?
Lol I am here with my new pet !!
Alligator? Tiger? Horseshoe crab?
The last one is close but nop
Whatâs the premise? Not familiar.
Sea snail
I donât know how close that is other than living in salt water but I appreciate the W.
A non dialogue animated show about a cave man and his pet trex
And while weâre suggesting shows, if you want a fun look at AI, check out Pantheon, the animated series.
A caveman and a dinosaur become friends after tragedy strikes them both
Nop my tea tbh
Many shenanigans ensue
Just keep going.
Have not been as pleased with a shows ending in ages.
Or
Ok i'll see
||one of the protagonists becomes a digitized consciousness, a sudo AI, and she uses her immortality to simulate infinite realities with near perfect fidelity around a red dwarf star until sheâs able to create the one where her and her lover get to live happily ever after.||
My pet snail is actually a neritina one not sea one sorry lol
I thought we were friends.
Sorry?
Made by the same guy responsible for samurai Jack if that helps. Doesnt shy away from the graphic violence like how in samurai Jack itâs mostly implied violence
Iâm teasing you for taking away my W.
It does. A lot actually. Partner and I binged it a few months ago. Iâd never watched it all the way through other than what bits Iâd get on Toonami way back.
Ohhh hahaha sorry i have adhd and i dont get double sence some times lol
tickmilk isnt... milk
Iâm watching that next, never got to finish it myself
I enjoyed it all through. Some notes, maybe, for the final season, but everything wraps up appropriately imo.

Kayaked alongside some orcas once and watched them âplayâ with a seal by catapulting it many meters into the air. Over. And over.
A lot of concepts regarding the Marathon ship are similar to a short story I wrote in college. Namely the "complex agreements regarding procreation." I think i'm gonna sue bungie for real.
Are any of you guys lawyers?
And will you work pro bono?

No and no but Iâll take your money.
they do this in Beverly hills

Yeah
I think it's the one where he shouts about destroying Durandal
I gotta get into OG marathon so I can get at these terminals
Iâm looking but in the meantime I stumbled upon this gem:

`I rejoice in Durandal's destruction, but it was his hubris that destroyed him. He wanted to be like a god, the savior of all S'pht. He wanted to make them believe he would lead them to freedom, but all he did was awaken and destroy their dream.
When the S'pht first boarded the Marathon, Durandal fought for their confidence. His effort awakened a lust for freedom. The myth of the eleventh clan became their mantra, and goaded by Durandal it resonated through the enslaved S'pht consciousness.
Even after seventeen years, the myth burns deeply in the tissues of the S'pht, bounding through the netways of the Pfhor empire, unnoticed by the Pfhor.
Durandal interpreted the last line of this myth "...[the moon] vanished with a technology that folded space."`
@sterile seal that appears to be the only such string I can find. âtraxIVâ at least doesnât show up anywhere else in the terminal texts (thatâs searchable, at least).
Oh yeah thats the one
From For Carnage
Maybe Leela Durandal and Tycho are Traxus IVa, b, and c?
Or Traxus IV-Cs going off of Traxus IX-A being the colony AI model
can yall lore nerds explain to me what was happening in the PSA: PUBLIC HEALTH recording. sounds terrifying
âC?â Do you mean the <40c<40c> 48c<48c>

Yeah
anyone noticed the similarities to this game and Alien: Earth?
I just wiped an assassin maybe 5 minutes into a solo run, he had two assassins specific cores. I know heâs gotta be upset
Anybody been watching the Artemis II moon mission today? đ
Wrong channel brođ
I donât know if thatâs what thatâs referencing; at least in NuLore we know theyâre Traxus-IX-A models. But I also donât know what that means so.
No this is now canon
Nice job. đŞ
Oh ok. My bad gang
Just read the codex about the cat that dug itself 13 meters into the ground. Holy
Some form of poorly understood illness (considering the mentions of autophobia and religious euphoria, I would assume related to the kind of insanity that we've seen talked about from people who come out of cryo) began to affect the colonists and they took steps to quarantine/treat the illness as best as they could, or at least there was a PSA stating they were trying to do so (disease possibly related to/is the Sâctâlacâtr bioweapon engineered by the S'pht to kill the Pfhor?)
a man can never dip his foot into the same river twice, because it's not the same river, and it's not the same man

Definitely an entry that there hopefully is other reference to that I just haven't seen lol, I'm still parsing my way through the codex as I read it
To someone who knows next to nothing about the lore this is a crazy read
Lmao I'm sure, go down the rabbit hole if you have the time!!
There a good starting point?
Marathon's Story Page https://share.google/n5vseBtmvjosDv4or
Anything you could ever want to know lies within
Thank u brother
You could also play the OG games (I did forever ago) but this is almost every piece of info out there in one place
I've tried the og games. Not really my cup of tea I don't think
Imo the most important thing to know about the Marathon timeline happens in 1994, when an alien apparition appeared to president B--- Cl----- and told him about the dreaming corpse of an alien deity, sleeping under the Yucatan jungle
Can anyone offer an explanation for the data wall on perimeter? Like, what is a "data wall" - what is its function and why did they need one and what's it's relationship to the hauler?
Bill Clinton isnât censored, heâs lore, man!
they got Pfhorrest, I'm not taking chances
Some other names thoughâŚ
I don't think Data Wall has been explained in any specific codex entries, and I haven't read enough to 100% piece together what it's meant to be for with certainty
I forgot what he got dinged for but it was my fault. đ¤
If I understand correctly, the data wall is like a giant sensor array. The Hauler is its mobile command center / the thing that is pulling the new sections of the data wall into place (I think it deploys in folded up sections which the Hauler pulls into place like opening up an accordion
the Hauler is like, a mobile command center/dorm as far as I can tell
Big sensor suite, it seems. But Iâm not sure I have a ton to point to.
Yeah I thought it was interesting there isn't a codex entry. I find the structure to be one of the more intriguing on that map
so like, scientists do stuff with the data wall, and the Hauler is where they do that stuff and coordinate it
I think itâs also probably the hardest one to meaningfully explain.
I see... Still kind of weird that it takes the shape of a wall I guess?
Data Wall collects planetary readings, which are refined and observed at hauler, and then transmitted to the main colony via the North and South relays
Bill Clinton was in the room when a representative of the Jjaro (or an individual alien named Jjaro) told him that he needed to nuke the ancient evil alien in the Yucatan (that the Nazis knew about and tried to use for their own means)
Yeah at first I thought it was like a protective shell for big data cables, but then somewhere in codex it says it's taking in sensor data, they're using it to try to understand the anomaly
apparently, Station is the command hub for the data wall operations in the region, but was converted for that purpose and was formerly going to be a terraforming hub or something
Presence of a DATA WALL and dual RELAYS suggests heavy geologic surveillance and large-store data compilation and transference.
I think the data wall is really interesting because it seems to be an impermanent/temporary structure that can be moved/installed on demand by hauler. But at the same time it's connected to other POIs/tunnels, implying a deeper infrastructure. It has an outer coating of soft material that we see getting blown all over the place yet the inside is a multilevel rigid structure. It just strikes me as very weird
ROLE: A secondary support RELAY built once it was realized that planetary readings collected by the DATA WALL were too dense for a single RELAY to filter.

They all say the sameish thing. Iâll spare the channel from posting them all.
No one else was in the room where it happened, room where it happened.
The devilish referencer
nah like 5 other guys were there
So how about them Jjaro huh
There isnât much known about them to my knowledge
Big fans of the tide.
my favorite love story
of themselves?
I'm probably very late to this but I just finished the NuCaloric contracts and got that weird anomaly recording, debating whether or not i should drag it into my DAW and see if theres any secrets i can find in the audio
Bungie didnât like it
Bungie would definitely hide something in there
Apparently âď¸âď¸ is a bad word according to bungie đ they gave me a warning đ
has anyone found stuff yet? I'm nowhere near the crazy levels of those arg internet people
đ thats crazy ngl
anyone know how to fix my mic not woreking?
What even crazier is I was talking about something that happened in their game. Not in irl đ
I had mine accidentally muted for half the day, maybe check your settings?
Do as I mean, not as I say.
Mods are a bit peculiar with what they delete sometimes it seems
They deleted it đ
Now I need a list of whats not okay because Iâm pretty sure I read that being insulting is against guidelines but Iâve damn sure seen people damn near arguing and calling each other names in other channels. But you canât say âď¸ đ tf
Be careful they might flag you, you said adult words đł
My wife wonât be able to share the drinkable cheeseburger with me because it contains gluten and she has celiac đ˘
I was asked to pass this along: any language that can be perceived as âinappropriateâ to children will be modded. So keep it elementary school level everyone. Cant offend the children
Filthy Uesc Wirebacks
No skin havers
Imagine being unable to physically touch and feel bingus
You can say fuck and shit
But itâs mostly words pertaining to controversial subjects
I got muted for writing N*zis when discussing Pathways into Darkness
Can we say crap
Question: why do a colony and spaceship from 2773 have technology compatible with the 2890's?
This applies to the equipment we find, especially runner cores. Like why would those be stored aboard the ship?
I understand the Doylist explanation is that the game is about looting gear. But is there a Watsonian explanation?
It's like scavenging laser sights and drone fiber optics from a WWI battlefield.
UESC are crawling over the place, maybe they're using it as a storage place while exploring and investigating?
I don't think the comparison's fair lol
things are way more modular nowadays than let's say WWI weapons and tech if we stick to the metaphor
and in the extremely optimistic scenario that corporations actually started to care about last-gen products it might be another valid reason
another being that a certain threshold's been hit and corps just cna't afford to abandon last-gen stuff anymore
the spaceship is actually from the 2400s and so the colony was built with tech from then too
"cores" and "implants" are simplified terms applied to our congition by ONI but in reality the steps taken to ensure compatability with older modules is quite complex but not a need to know kind of thing for us since we are just killing machines
Are the shells made for tau ceti? Perhaps theyâre manufactured to be backwards compatible
that would also explain why they sometimes have silly names
Because they designed what they sent there to be backwards compatible. Very foolish to send designs that can't interface with the systems there
Don't think so. They're deployed on earth and mars too. In fact, the time-limited infill issue is exclusive to TCIV's environment
But these shells
⌠wait so is cryo not time limited lol
Sure ig, but that doesn't explain why tactical upgrades for Shells would be taken with the Marathon.
no i suppose not
Huh fair point. 2 possible explanations:
- marathon is in low orbit, so maybe the environmental effects still apply
- UESC monitoring/blockading transmissions, and Durandal periodically punches thru
don't think of them as physical cores and implants with the code already inside
it could be possible that said implants and cores can siphon code from existing structures that are backwards-compatible with our shell's overall kit thus producing said augments to our existing abilities
also shells didnt exist when marathon was launched
right?
its said they were deployed on mars, but after marathon departed no?
shells are relatively new yes but they're bespoke up until the tau ceti craze
I am presuming all cores and implants to not be literally just the boxes you shove into place in game but instead gamified visuals for larger kits and collections of technology, both new top of the line stuff and older tech
we do know that new cascadia just
was making BONKERS tech
most if not all the purple salvage is a new cascadia invention IIRC
so the notion of their tech being usable by shells doesn't feel that far off
they're making wiring frameworks that know what they'll be used for
yeah thats what I was kind of getting at. the gamified visuals could be explained by ONI modifying our perception somehow. runner doesnt need to know the technical details of the kit, just what its effects are
we look at a complicated wiring harness and just see a green box called Knife Fight V1
I don't even think its a perception filter lmao
I think it's just "don't look at the game logic please"
oh well yeah but its the lore channel so
fair
I'm on the side of equippable stuff that isn't salvage and valuables being contemporary stuff brought over
Our guns are clearly modern by the standards of the time period we're in, as we can buy them from the vendors
Do we know if UESC also utilizes runners? Like isn't Orion a runner?
Yeah and his officers are Runners
not every biocyber with a biomata shell's a runner
orion just has a bespoke biomata shell
Orion is killed at one point in the MIDA quest line and _gantry tells you he'll be brought back in a new body and pissed
Ah ok so the runners are specifically us mercenaries
that clip was pretty fucking brutal lol
runners are unregistered biocybers that have human rights and wartime protections forfeited yes
aka us
runners are also very active on sol
yea runner is more a title for people who use biomata for mercenary work
UESC biomata are also different from us in terms of retaining their identities (we Runners have lost our memories/past lives) and seemingly sticking to a single shell type while we jump around a lot:
The most recent incident involves one officer, M. Diaz (UESC#542), entering restricted vicinity of the Anomaly. Diaz became obscured from view due to airborne particulate and then could not be found without entering restricted vicinity. When returning later that day with a rescue party, Diaz was found inside a structure near the Anomaly, facing a wall. When addressed, Diaz exhibited severe cognitive confusion and what appeared to be biocybernetics deterioration indicative of many years without maintenance. Claims to have been lost for [REDACTED] years. Diaz is currently in medical isolation until further notice.
could also be a case of uesc biomata users being more cautious about the side effects of using multiple different shells
also a case of training maybe
Oh dang yeah ok I was wondering about some of those codexes where seemingly human UESC officials were talking in journal entries and what not. Like there are no literal humans on TCIV that we know of right?
maybe they're trained to use one specific shell
no actual human presence besides the dead colonists on tau ceti as of yet
One of Orion's officers notes that Runners don't care about dying because they can try again
[TKEL]: Well, we're still iterating. These things weren't built with emergent Runner behaviors in mind. Runners try anything, no regard for whether it'll get them killed, because they just come back.
I feel like UESC biomata would be a lot more versatile than what sekgen provides us with in multiple different shells if pre-tau shells are meant to be bespoke
The Sentinel teaser has a helmet very similar to the UESC Recruit head so that may be an active UESC style shell (that isn't decommissioned like Destroyer and Recon)
personality matrix or not aside it's also likely more durable than just synthsilk maybe
also something interesting in that audio log is that it sounds like the officer is using uesc robots
Yeah she's leading them I think
can't wait for more CSL shenanigans đ
fixing them in that moment
[TKEL]: **Going to lose this one. **
[ORION]: Just hold them off until I can get to the old crash site. I need them out of my way.
[TKEL]: Doing my best, Cap.
mildly scary that he can just do that lol
I wonder if we'll ever encounter a uesc officer shell as a boss of some kind. Kind of feels rude to just send bots our way
well I say gantry I mean mida in general
UESC officers seem roughly on the same level as us, but Orion would make a fun boss
imagine him as a souped up Warden with all their abilities
Red shield and shit
Yeah def
Orion?
orion is a biomata user
There's another one where some guy talks about doing on a recon run or something.
The UESC drones though are remote operable
oh that's a colony era journal, no? :3
most of the journals and such are from the colony era
Haha might be. Getting things mixed up perhaps, I did just pick up one of those
fair x3
something to help with that is that we never find modern day uesc logs in the field, we only can get them from the various factions we do contracts for :3
The other UESC officers with names are also biomata
Yes but he is on tciv
Ahh ok good to know. Makes sense uesc wouldn't be so careless with their comms as to leave then lying about
mhm mhm :3
And whatever UESC is making him do had him lose dudes
what the original comment meant was non digital humans
So there are humans there at least
Theres no fleshy humans on TC4
@twin trout In this teaser (0:25) we see a shot of what seem to be shells displayed on some kind of UESC UI, so these might be what Orion's officers look like
https://youtu.be/MXhQbF7TlbA?si=8RzuWKu__wC0Jplv&t=25
or zapped by darius
Eh? It seems like the audio logs of Orion complaining were fairly recent
those seemed more like individual colonist profiles if anything tbh since there's another shot of the same people with identical gear in a desert environment
could be! :3, they would definitely look close to destoryer and recon since they're both originally designed by the uesc
also the uesc tend to use a helmet that looks like recon's, you can find it as a gold item to exfil for money and as a codex item in cryo
Yeah on closer inspection the first one has a NuCal marking on his chest, which was also on the suits worn by the colonists in the reveal cinematic
when the Pfhor bombed the colony
Yeah but he complains that he's losing dudes to his superiors who seem to not care
oh wait yea those are just colonists, you can see the face of one behind the helmet
Could be that hes just dumping shells
Then the upcoming Sentinel may be closer to the UESC officers then
perhaps in the lore the Runners have cracked the code on the schematics Orion's team are using
that'd be neat :3
I believe yes those are colonists you can see it in the trailer where joy and Reed talk
I guess he's really concerned about losing shells I guess
It's odd that they're offscreening these dudes, but then again Orion is also very obscured
The we are all monsters trailer
I mean shell death is still traumatising to the user
He's also "losing" them in other ways, like Diaz having a mental breakdown after being lost for years
Truee
The Anomaly is causing problems beyond just killing them
Like the compiler massacred them all but Orion and his dudes can just come back from that
The Anomaly breaks them or maybe even disappears them entirely
I find it funny that Joy has a French accent (named after Charlemagne's sword Joyeuse) but Durandal doesn't
actually wait
y'know how in the cinematic thingy that one colonist gets their head blown up by walking into the anomaly
do you think orion also sprouted into pretty colours like that
I think it was more related to the compiler
What if Durandal just really missed a bag of Chesterâs hot fries and Arizona iced tea
The log is related to the crashed shuttle with the S'pht sample inside
I felt like she still had a british one
He got headaches and then something caused him to fire his gun before his head seemed to explode
or something got ripped out
isn't it the same crashed shuttle we retrieve the anomalous sample from
where we get auditory hallucinations and emped
Sounded like his spine got ripped out
Its not an anomalous sample i believe its a containment module
well yea but it's containing (presumably) an anomalous thingy
Speaking of spine ripping, whose spine is SO holding in the M2 first chapter screen?
maybe it's a BoB who he's doing the whole "Alas, poor Yorick" bit with
90% sure it's another runner's spine
The Destroyer homage for sure
but in M2 the first image is famously SO doing the Predator spine homage
oh I completely misinterpreted what you said I'm so sorry X3
not Pfhor either since it's bloody red
I saw spine and my mind glazed over the rest X3
I need to get that shit for my background
that M2 image was the first ever exposure to Marathon I had
this proto-Master Chief doing a Predator
I kinda do hope later on Bungie does focus more on the heist and stealth aspects of the runners over straight combat
The runner phones, revive kits, and the fact they are all well equipped to hack stuff seems to imply they were all built to be infiltrators and spies over just fighters
It's why I quite enjoy payday 2
The UESC officers get involved as psycho elite enemy classes
"LIGHTNING BOLT! LIGHTNING BOLT!"
"THIS IS WHAT WE CALL A DIFFICULTY TWEAK!"
Yes, but they're much more fragile than their UESC counterparts
We dont know that
that cooouuld be purely gameplay
We havent encountered a UESC runner
We have slightly more hp than a uesc recruit đ
oh I thought they meant the uesc robots
Robot vs biosynthetic shell
one could argue that the shells are so fragile because the shields are supposed to be the main thing stopping you from dying
But yes, runners are all special ops/infiltrators by design
and also with the whole interference that tau ceti seems to be giving the shells, causing them to degrade
I think they may be less expendable than us by virtue of better equipment and general mindset (dying and shifting shells has psychological consequences active soldiers should probably avoid)
Like gold shields may be standard issue for them
it could also be like a law related thing
all biomata are meatsacks at the end of the day though, since most of our shells have the same basic stats
biomata can't be stronger than uesc robots to incentivise not fighting the uesc
back in sol anyways
Vandal was born when MIDA stole a bunch of generic shells and implanted a bunch of different enhancements into them
like the arm cannon
yeas
limitations may also be for psychological reasons
apparently the Destroyer's offensive abilities caused problems to mental health
an extremely powerful shell could cause some kind of complex the regulatory bodies would prefer to avoid
i still think this is propaganda cope to decommission the ultra killers
well only the UESC misses out on the fun
I wonder how they are buffing her
they should give her 2 arm cannons
Destroyers are legal for corporations and Runners don't give a shit about illegal activities
actually give the second arm a flamethrower
You can toggle shoes without the gold core hopefully
hmmm
Though official UESC statements condone (probably a typo of "condemn") the use of DESTROYER SHELLS, rumors suggest they have been deployed in clandestine operations against RUNNER activities across Sol.
Most RUNNERS assume the off-lining of the DESTROYER was a public relations mandate as cover for various "more terrible" UESC operations.
bureaucracy hates ultra efficiency :)))
makes one wonder just how destructive destroyers were to receive a similar reaction to battleroids
you're never supposed to do your job well if you're involved in the government
you raise expectations, you make your colleagues look bad, you increase base workload...in this case you kill too much
Well in game you can kill just about any warden pretty fast with his ult
lord it feels good to blast a warden using a sponsored free kit
myea but I am remiss to use gameplay as a foundation for assumptions based on the fact that playability tends to take precedent over lore :3
a Project Goliath file mentions MjĂślnir Mk VII-IX and Sharur Mk 2-6 cyborgs and has this note
It should also be noted that although they share series nomenclature from earlier cyborg assets, these are not the battleroids of old.
My only wish is that we'd have roaming groups of coordinated UESC squads like in the trailer đ
this would be cool. might make roaming a bit hard considering noise
Destroyer got destroyed by an entire swarm of Recruits, not a single Grenadier or Assault in that group
oh ya no I know they're definitely not AS powerful as them but the fact that they had some form of legal discussion over them does imply they're pretty devastating :3
god....SO COOL AHHH i love the cinematic
also they somehow managed to snipe Vandal to death
Yes, we should play it like on stalker master difficulty
Only downside is this game doesn't really have armor and shields can't be modded sadly
I do like how the uesc recruit head shares a similar design to the uesc human operative helmet :3
It's a possible case of gradually lessening the destructiveness of further models, biomata seem marked as 29th century successors to the Mjolnir of old
true true :3
even the later model Mjolnir of 28th century construction are apparently less potent than the SO's Mk 4 model
and he's 2300s vintage at the latest
I'm imagining the original Mk 1 that destroyed Thermopylae and Icarus as far more grotesque than the Mk 4 that were disguised as regular colonists
yeas
The history terminal paints the first battleroids as slap dash WMDs while SO passed as an unusually large and strong human
đ¤¤
Bungie seems to be going with the Tau Ceti Mjolnir still being corpses though, at least going by Nona's thread
stupid question but do the runners teleport to tau ceti from earth
No we're in orbit somewhere
