I think Marathon has a chance to pull some of the Arc Raiders playerbase. Raiders has a massive audience of folks who, by-and-large will openly tell you that they'd never played an Extraction shooter before. Even I am someone who is pretty honest about the fact that I didn't think they were for me, until I played Arc Raiders. So there's a ton of players out there, suddenly ready to pay attention to the next big Extraction game.

It helps that Embark are straight out of content right now in a big way. They recently announced their upcoming content roadmap, and I assumed they'd be dropping some major updates in February and early March to help retain their playerbase as much as possible through the Marathon launch, but ... that's not the case. From now until April, there's basically nothing other than some minor map conditions and "new Arc threats" which a lot of people are assuming will just be Shredders showing up in maps outside of Stella Montis.

They aren't coming out with a new map until April, a month after Marathon releases.

So they're definitely vulnerable, and a lot of players --again, including myself-- are just super bored with Raiders right now, and ready to do anything else with our free time.

Marathon is 1st person, I know a lot of people who are explicitly interested in it because of that. I think a lot of people don’t know what to make of it, the fact that an extraction shooter is so story/lore heavy.

It’s got a good shot at being popular but it does need to grow its own base. I think as it stands it’ll launch to a relatively small but healthy playerbase and grow over time. Opening numbers do not determine a game’s life every time, look at BO7 and BF6.

Bungie can handle the game for the long haul, and I think Sony is willing to give them runway considering the cost of the acquisition.

I understand your perspective and it’s well founded. Only time will tell but the game had a far larger uphill battle when it was a meme game and mired in controversy. I don’t see if being concord 2 by any means but def will struggle to onboard new players bc of the distrust of bungie. It either needs a critical mass of players bought in at launch or it will really struggle to vie for more resources and funds to update and invigorate the game post launch. It’s possible but challenging for sure

Very different games and communities, for sure. Arc Raiders has an extraordinarily casual playerbase, a majority of which aren't interested in PvP at all, and who are super vocal about wanting a PvE-only mode. There's a reason people call the game "Unc Raiders."

Marathon, being more of a PvP-forward, squad-based competitive shooter? Completely different vibes, and likely to attract a completely different audience.
