never attack multiple enemies at once, try to get one of them to follow you. Poke them and run away and repeat. they dont get their health back so you can slowly poke em down. craft and eat food, look for the food that gives a health buff.

make sure to run around the starter island and check out every point marked on your map, you get a good weapon there as well!

Helping out your crew with their fights, I've found the executioner to be good against groups, and when the boarding starts you can shoot the pirates from your ship and any kills will count.

You can also just outright sink the ships.

Place a bell and then she joins me, if I want to return or sail back I just ignore the bell and return normally anyway
