yeah he shows two ways to do it in that video, the first one is good to start learning it on and DOES work on all healths but its less consistent because its more precise, the buffer method is better to learn after you can do the first method and is more consistent because you have a bit more room for error, but the input itself is harder/weirder imo

theres definitely techniques that u can use that will help your movement, stuff like dash spot-dodging, dash jump fast falling, making sure to dash your attacks where applicable, and in general just understanding spacing; maybe some guides with focus on movement will help you. learning to space sigs and understand their hitboxes and how to punish them can help you get gold since spammers can be a problem

basically anything you get hit by in the game is not true on scythe so try to be unpredictable with your dodges
spear try dodging up and out when you get hit by a slight

try focusing on dodging, the spear combo slight > dlight > sair is dodgable in the slight > dlight part if you didn't know. sounds like you should try changing up your dodges more and not dodging the same way, understand the true combos of the other weapons and know when you can and cant dodge a combo/string. make sure to make the most of diagonal dodging and upwards dodging, also dodging in (towards the enemy) is usually the worst dodge you can do
