Picked the game up recently. Genuinely trying to learn. Im steadily climbing just apeing out but Im sure halt to that comes soon (2v2s 1300ish rn). Theres a lot knowledge around - its easy to get lost in it. Id like to find a single thing I could focus on for now instead of trying to learn a bit of everything (and watching hours of yt vids procrastinating). What should that be?

first is combos. learn the important ones and practice them
second thing is movement. watch sandstorm's movement guide and the shiros dojo one

combos will allow you to punish and build up damage better
movement will allow you to evade and approach better

Well, for the low df part specifically; try not to just mash your dodge when you get hit, try to actually time your dodge, it seems hard but its pretty natural, I only mash my dodge if I miss the dodge window in the first place (mashing it isn't bad, but there's always that chance you'll fail to dodge it).
Some 1 frame windows like spear side light > down light (and then > side air true) and bow side slight > down light (and then multiple true combos from dlight) can be hard to dodge especially when you're new but you will definitely learn to dodge them in time, you've just gotta keep trying with the method i mentioned above.
Another thing, if you're on pc you can go back and watch your replays, and turn on "show stun" in the replay viewer, letting you see the exact dodge frames if you're unsure if something was true or if you could have escaped.
Final thing to mention is that dodge isn't your only way to get out of strings, you can fast fall OR jump out of strings; anything over 2 frames will give you enough time to jump - tho if their hitbox hits above, you will still be hit, but in that case fast falling works, you'd be surprised what you can get out of, like: katar dlight > dair (the half pipe) is fast fall-able. same for bow dlight > nlight on orange health, even something like sword dlight > gravity cancel > dlight is jumpable, just try your movement options out if you do get caught without a dodge

neutral dodge in the air then attack (neutral dodge = dodging without pressing a direction) if your dodge ends it wont let you gravity cancel
