to be more specific the pre shadowlands game is seperated in either Bfa or Chromie Time Leveling in one of the expansions you want to go into. Chromie Time scales mobs etc aproprietly to your character so that you can go from 1-50 in a single expansion. While in Chromie Time you can queue for Dungeons of the Expansion in which Chromie Time you are currently in and without picking one you are basically in a Chromie Time version of Bfa

So you don't have Shadowlands, then? Heart of Azeroth would be the obvious first step. Try to get to Nazjatar as early as you can and unlock Heart of Azeroth essences. Then the legendary cloak. Unfortunately, group BFA content is not really an option these days, people have moved on to Shadowlands. If you have Shadowlands, then don't worry about any of this (maybe except the basic Heart of Azeroth if you want) and go to the Shadowlands. @pallid fulcrum

Those two world quests might have been in BFA zones, for example. Or some other stuff that is interpreted by the game as a world quest, but in truth isn't one.

As an Alliance character there is Chromie somewhere in SW (you can see an hourglass icon on the map) and you can choose there to start any of the old expansion campaigns to get up to level 50 and then pick up SL from there. I guess it's the same for Horde characters as well

basically what they did is that when you create a new character you can choose any of the previous expansion campaignsto follow until you are 50

It did, that was the game back then. Questing is your best bet, just grab a joint, throw some music on, and just power through Feralas, the worst zone in existence. You can grind mobs in the high 50s in Ungoro and Silithus, and there’s no shortage there. Silithus mobs drop living essence, which is used for NR gear needed for AQ.. farm it now, be rich later.

That depends on what you want to do. If you like what you are doing, keep doing it. Not until Shadowlands is there a clearly marked main quest line. You can try one of the expansions if you'd like a bit of a cohesive story.

If you are on a never-subscribed-previously account, you can play those level 20 characters and any experience they get is banked until they have enough to hit level 30 with the banked XP. Once you subscribe, the banked XP is applied and you will thus be boosted to level 30. If I am not mistaken, you will not get level-appropriate gear though, so you will essentially have to fight enemies scaled to level 30 using level 20 gear. I don't know how well characters fare with such discrepancy, so you might want to weigh in your options.

They're usually uniquely named.. so look out for that
there's two rares over where you do the "Vespyr of History" world quest, to kill the blue angel bird thingies..
