lovely, isn't it? IT world is still like telling you "oh you wanna create something awesome, welcome to the world of pain, first get yourself fucked and lets see"

it was already there though

the newer teams is a lot better performance wise

old teams needs a bullet to the head, they need to just delete it

instead of keeping it as Teams "Classic"

MS is keeping old teams cuz corporations implemented it, and MS wants to keep making money

but they want to offer new teams from anyone who recognizes teh cancerous performance and decides it's worth replacing

hopefully they designate Teams as Legacy

Anyone experienced with Recharts? I wanted to have a legend with some items on the left and some on the right, or two legends, but I don't see this as possible

brisk inlet
wooden tendon
#

I figured it out through some CSS magic I would get fired for at any respectable company

wooden tendon
#

I almost got my Windows overlay to work but in Windows I cannot have a fully transparent window with opaque widgets on top of it it seems like.

wooden tendon
#

I wanted to make an overlay that would put transparent PNGs on left and right (gradients with alpha blending) side of my super ultrawide monitor and using tracking of where I am looking would fade those in and out in an attempt to reduce eye strain. I got the tracking working correctly but Windows UI dev is kicking my butt.

#

It seems impossible for a fullscreen window in Windows to have transparent background but opaque content, so the only other alternative is to have multiple borderless windows, maybe I'll try this next (one window for each zone housing the gradient)

#

It blows my mind that rendering a few PNGs on the screen is such hassle.

brisk inlet
#

welcome to our world of pain...

#

btw let me know in the other hw channel if you decide to keep your new screen and I'd appreciate your personal take on pro/con

brisk inlet
#

btw does anyone use PDF audio readers? I suddenly received a request and no clue how to deal with it...

#

I heard Adobe has their own solution but who the fuck wants to pay more to Adobe and what about Speechify? Or any other recommended free solution to try out?

white knot
# brisk inlet I heard Adobe has their own solution but who the fuck wants to pay more to Adobe...

The full specfication for the JS in PDFs was only ever implemented by Adobe Acrobat, and it contains some ridiculous things like the ability to do 3D rendering, make HTTP requests, and detect every monitor connected to the user's system. However, on Chromium and other browsers, only a tiny amount of this API surface was implemented, due to obvious security concerns. With this, we can do whatever computation we want, just with some very limited IO.```
brisk inlet
#

Well not my call to tell them stop using PDF blobdoggoshruggoogly

#

Now they want an audio reader on top and I'm lost

warped spire

windows narrator

brisk inlet

warped spire
#

its not very intuitive to use, but afaik it works

brisk inlet
#

I suppose they asked for handicapped people, who knows... I don't wanna be mean but that's not exactly my expertise

warped spire
#

honestly I just don't know how to use all the fancy features on it to select things correctly, but there is a way to do it

brisk inlet
#

I hope I don't have to figure this out for myself, ever

#

The new AI shall do this for me lol

warped spire
#

there are a bunch of keybinds and options that change verbosity of things, and tells it what and how much to read

brisk inlet
#

jesus

#

in the past business leaders let their assistant read all their text but now it seems its cheaper to have a hot sexy AI voice do it for you, with all kind of customizations lol

warped spire
#

i mean the natural voice packs are pretty decent

#

I imagine there is a copilot option

#

idk how it works though

#

mmm, so you can open the pdf in word and select and right click and hit read aloud lol

brisk inlet
#

ok, so it's basically easy to learn for windows standards

warped spire
#

i assume that exists in edge as well?

#

since that is just a button click to read the text aloud

#

yea, its easier in edge

#

if you open a pdf in edge its just a button at the top

#

easy to find

#

as long as it isn't an image

#

if its an image idk lol, use the pdf thing to turn it to text first?

brisk inlet
#

man i love people... I asked back an hour ago if any specific OS is mandatory and if a solution based on Windows is fine and now she tells me its MacOS 😓 Maybe I force her to to install edge on Apple, will be fun for sure

warped spire
#

lol

#

yea idk what ios has, prob something similar

brisk inlet
#

probably a third party app but I'm not aware of Apple having their own app yet, they stagnated in this area pretty much

warped spire
#

they have an accessability feature too

#

not as easy as the edge button though

#

more like narrator

#

send link to apple documentation lol

brisk inlet
#

alright edge it is

#

if she doesn't wanna pay 150 bucks for speechify, she will learn to love edge

warped spire
#

there is a chrome extension?

#

I think

#

test that maybe

#

safari might have its own option?

#

I dont have anything apple though

brisk inlet
#

yep I had that on my list too just in case, so she shall betray Apple and download competitor stuff one way or another 👍

warped spire
#

lol

#

ms edge on macos does sound hilarious

#

"the IT guy told me to!"

brisk inlet
#

lol

green escarp
#

I’m doing stuff with lots of text at work and wishing I had an audio text reader…

warped spire
#

the new natural voices for windows narrator actually don't sound jarring

brisk inlet
#

As long as they do not try to sell Cortana voice again, all green lol

warped spire
#

there are a bunch of different options

#

which is neat

brisk inlet
#

Does the other way around also work properly these days? Dictate and AI typing the text for you.

warped spire
#

AI is a lot better at self-correcting dictation yes

#

there are still a few issues when it doesn't actually target the right subject of context

#

like there is the AI speech to text for subtitling video's

#

you can do it in Word via the dictation feature

#

there was a button to upload an avi file

#

I haven't used this kind of thing much

#

I tried it briefly

#

its loads better than old style, but sometimes it seems to get confused around the topic that is being spoken and will start interpreting the wrong words

#

like if you are talking about something military, but it interprets it as something else, it won't spell the military terms correctly, it will use words that are close to the topic it thinks you are talking about(that sound similar)

#

you see it in some youtube video's

wooden tendon

I used ChatGPT 3 different times yesterday for code and none of the code samples did what I asked

If the best coding models are 20% better than ChatGPT then this is still completely unusable

at the end the mentor fixed most of it for them, so AI is far from taking over their jobs

narrow grove
#

we support copilot internally for our devs and they seem to get good use out of it
we're so fucking microsoft pilled it's embarassing

green escarp
#

We might get copilot

#

We just got an internal ChatGPT thing and that took like a year or 2

green escarp
brisk inlet
#

but isn't that openai too? hence ms anyway, so I believe it has more psychological impact to force her to install MS Edge on her shitbook 🤣

green escarp
#

I wasn’t responding to the Microsoft part

#

Just that o1 is cgpt 3 specifically trained for coding

#

There’s a newer one of cgpt 4 or 5 trained for coding

#

MS owns GitHub so they have all private repos and the best source of high quality training data for code

brisk inlet
#

Their task was to test chatGPT v5 and to my knowledge o1 is included there too. What's the point to separate o1 from it? I never used chatGPT myself, the current versions are not worth the price they ask from business customers

#

MS did not much over the last decades but ever since Nadella took over quiet some hot beef out there taken over one after another, among them OpenAI, Github, Linkedin and more. They literally want to cement their chokehold on business networks

#

I'm not sure if taking over game industry was a good idea but they shit money, so I guess their business units won't be affected. Although I remember Bill Gates himself was not amused at that time, he intended to shutdown the entire gaming division because that was the only one making losses

#

ZHAW has internal issues too, their division have leaders with too much freedom to decide things that doesn't align to the overall standard of the entire unviersity at the end. ChatGPT created such a dispute too. While IT division is officially allowed to use it as long as they mention that as source reference, other divisions simply don't allow it like anyone among students cares about that shit because they can't prove you used it as long as they're not so fucking stupid just to copypaste

#

In fact I encourage every student to use chatGPT correctly because our education in Europe is everything but efficient or talent-oriented

#

but I reserve my privilege to reject using it myself 😂

green escarp
#

The version of o1 based on v5 is not called o1 🙂

brisk inlet
#

Ehm ChatGPT v5 is officially not released yet, even postponed again, they frequently change things there and certain students were tasked to switch from ChatGPT Edu and Pro to the test model OpenAI provides to try out as they please for IT purposes. I'm pretty sure they do not communicate their name plans with outside random people, so we couldn't care less how things are named or called for now

#

All I saw from v5 myself that day is that's much faster and does summary better but coding was unimpressive as we followed the showcase with one of the promising IT startups who volunteered to provide real case material so one team with students fixed with help of OpenAI and the other without.

#

Conclusion was pretty simple too:
There is merit since standard stuff are much faster screened and fixed and the expensive workforce can focus on challenges entirely

#

it was supposed to be released late 2024 or early 2025 and before the release is official, it doesn't matter what people speculate before

#

200/m just for the pro is already quiet a juicy price

PayPal should be burned out of this world. Has always been a troublemaker.

brisk inlet
#

yep they were literally having a fintech monopoly back at that time but what they have become, fortunately we have plenty of alternatives that keep the pressure to banks

green escarp
#

yes and no

#

we have alternative banks

#

but paypal is the only non-credit card that is a credit that is widely supported on the internet

#

and works with just sign in, no credit card info required to buy

#

paypal is an evil corporation and really should be punished very severely

brisk inlet
#

Amazon isn't sleeping either, they partner with Visa, provide Amazon store card that even some retail stores accept

green escarp
#

they work in store and in app but when I buy a game on steam app on pc, I pay with paypal or credit card, there is no apple or google pay option

#

maybe in mobile app there is

is Steam still that fucked? hold on, need to check lol

green escarp

almost everything is "that fucked"

#

war thunder probably as well

#

Epic, EA, xbox, etc probably as well

brisk inlet
#

Wow they accept Line Pay but neither Apple nor Google are listed, I guess the extreme commission pissed them off

green escarp
#

nah its just

#

why pay more when they can make more money

#

steam is basically so good you don't care

brisk inlet
#

I avoid paying directly to Steam because they are rarely cheaper than any other official store and I do not like their refund policy at all, so I have my favorite EU stores

#

I will probably have to deal with fintech very soon too... received a request to establish two more plcs, so good luck to me

green escarp
#

Good luck indeed

brisk inlet
#

btw we still use PayPal as intermediate payment solution if certain shops are not avoidable but still questionable but we no longer have assets or cards saved there

I heard some alternative virtual cards like Wise sometimes get rejected. I also faced a funny incident at one single McDonalds Drive-In somewhere on the highway between BaWü to Bavaria where my DKB Debit Visa was rejected despite they accept Visa in general.
In the past Amazon and many others made it impossible for us minors to pay anything without credit card, i.e. our parents consent. My choice was brutally limited by design, nowadays it seems to be more relaxed than before, they added more options and you can also have a prepaid credit card to load cash on it

brisk inlet
wooden tendon

my virtual visa gets rejected quite often

I still try it first every time though

I'm glad to hear more reviews because I was thinking of giving it a try soon or later but it seems I better stick to my oldschool credit card provided by UBS

wooden tendon
#

Ah I just realized they cant be used for recurring payments apparently in some places

brisk inlet
#

also the security level is insane, our credit cards no longer work outside Switzerland or for online purchase, you first have to unlock it, giving your consent, so banks can later say, hey you did it on your own, pls don't blame us for your bad purchase

wooden tendon
#

In here I need to authorize every new payment with an app AND a text message OTP

#

and then it will still fail sometimes

#

im like bruh its my money

if I want to get scammed, let me

Netflix is crazy too, two of our share members suddenly got bombarded with "please verify your device" frequently like twice a month and that did not happen before 2024 and we are still having the exact same premium account and exact same devices

Btw Switzerland was resisting PayPal, GooglePay and ApplePay like crazy, the banks are still refusing to work with them at all cost. I believe Swiss Cards AECS was the only one going rogue and now probably sold to AmEx.
I think they generally didn't like the idea of foreign fintech and alternative solutions taking over their business.
We also have TWINT as local alternative to ApplePay and it has some perks but its generally ridiculous. Slow transaction speed on PoS terminals, every bank has a different TWINT app version lol It's really a mess

#

Well with CS bankrupt, all indirect issued cards by Swisscards on behalf of CS are now transferred to UBS, and with AmEx taking over Swisscard, I believe fintech solutions will drastically pipe down in Switzerland, business as usual I guess

narrow grove

Is it having issues running newer windows (10/11?)
W7 is not supported anymore so appart from running software that absolutely requires it (and pref. in a airgap) I'd stay away from it

humble harness
narrow grove
#

I'd probably put W10 and debloat it as much as possible. W11 has a TPM requirement still I think (?)

humble harness
#

What is TPM?

narrow grove
#

It's a little module on motherboards that helps with security on the hardware level.
The actual mechanics go over my head but one of the things it can do is verify that the software you're booting is genuine and secure. Else malicious software could be present even before your OS starts up and be very hard to detect

TPM 2.0 was necessary for W11 which made some platforms incompatible even if they weren't that old, though I remember reading they walked back on that

his complaint is still actively harmful to open-source; if people get annoyed when you take MIT license at its word, companies will just stop open sourcing software at all

brisk inlet
# tropic solar Steve is really getting his nickers in a twist over nothing. PresentMon is MIT l...

In his words among other things he stated "...it isn't illegal but rude..." and also showed the MIT license. He didn't indicate copytheft or any sort of license infringement in legal sense but I agree with him that Nvidia clearly approached this ill-intended with no sign of cooperation or even communicating with Intel beforehand.
Maybe PresentMon itself isn't such a big deal but imo this is a fundamental issue in the entire industry, the total lack of cooperation and unwillingness to do some side steps that is not directly related to profit but would benefit all of them regardless.

green escarp
#

lol

#

Another lie

#

The complaint is not targeted at Intel

#

The complaint is targeted at Nvidia

#

The possible results of this complaint are that either the license is switched to copyleft (unlikely), or nvidia pushes their changes (unlikely), or that Nvidia ignores the complaint (likely)

tropic solar
#

Or companies are actively discouraged from sharing source in future because you get a bunch of angry gamers parroting something they heard in a video

green escarp
#

Nvidia doing it would still benefit themselves the most

They have the most responsive, highest fidelity experience possible

This should be made clear with testing that is open source and verifiable

But they do because that’s hot they got where they are

tropic solar

Reviewing & testing pull requests is work, often more work than writing the patch. it's just plain wrong to make an implication that just because software is open source, people should open source their changes. That's what copyleft is for.

# tropic solar Or companies are actively discouraged from sharing source in future because you ...

"If" Nvidia or any other get discouraged after this, truth to be told we gained nothing before and we lose nothing if they stop using it because they don't wish to cooperate despite opensource and no harm lol
The entire world was always discouraged from using opensource imo because they strongly believe opensource gives zero profit but for the better or worse Alphabet/Google proved everyone wrong by generating multi-billion profit just by building an empire full of free services plus opensource projects as follows:
https://opensource.google/projects
just to mention a few prominent power names, Android and Chromium that directly affects a large junk of the consumer world. Linux is the opposite showcase how to fail opensource business spectacularly because more hackers than any consumers are attracted to this.

I showcased Google and Linux, I see no contradiction and I did not argue about Google using opensource themselves. What's the point of your argument here? I fail to understand it tbh.
Google's entire empire is based on free service and open source, in other words one company was successfully attracted and inspired by opensource. It is NOT my argument but Steve's claim that people might get discouraged and I stated clearly that the whole world was always discouraged from using opensource and Alphabet doesn't change that statistic either.

No offense but that's another opinion of yours and that's fine but your arguments are pretty weak from start. You claimed GN indicates things he did not, I quoted precisely what he said in the video that negates all of your arguments and Mr. Owl tried to explain it to you quiet generously.

# white knot Windows in general or Windows Server only when it comes to the revenue?

It was reported as "personal computing data" so I suppose they mean non-server units. The official reports from MS are a bit tricky because they add Win commercial and Win cloud, device revenue (most likely Surface line up), XBox content and services and search, news and advertisement to that unit, so I'm forced to wait for the third party data combined from Bloomberg, GfK, Deloitte. Later I double check with the largest retail/ecommerce and OEM if the sales and growth per year match more or less.

#

In the past it was a lot easier to extract the Windows OEM part because none of their side businesses were impressive but now it's no longer the case.

#

Xbox content has an explosive growth of 61% year to year change, advertisement also from 8 to 19%, devices 9-17% and Windows subscription based sales accounting for 11-13%, so I'm more than ever relying on third party data to extract Windows alone

#

We mostly ignored the Windows server reports but ever since they suddenly gained momentum, we were actively watching the change if it was just a rare snapshot or a new trend

#

After the take over of half the gaming industry I believe Xbox content division will have a crazy boost thanks to Activision-Blizzard (more Activision) and other promising 2nd tier studios such as Obsidian Entertainment

  • turning on force-change of pw after defined period of time

  • certain configs on windows surface ui disabled
  • edge webview2 blowing up your cpu

#

surface ui?

brisk inlet
brisk inlet
# green escarp why are you even using powershell

because that's the only way to force-change certain things MS suddenly decided they don't want you to have power to change, especially related to certain apps or how they behave in the background

green escarp
#

huh?

brisk inlet
#

After finding out that "edgewebview2" blew up your cpu load for nothing, I first believed it's related to edge browser but no it's an annoying feature fully integrated into outlook and other shit, so basically you either remove outlook or have to deal with it somehow. for a while powershell config change worked, after another update it was wiped and reset

#

now we fixed it somehow differently and made sure it doesnt affect cpu like that again

#

it made no sense especially because I removed Edge webbrowser for quiet a long time

#

If you know how to use windows, you should be aware of these issues because they've been reported across multiple business networks who do not use dedicated IT and/or custom enterprise solutions. They cannot afford such troubles if suddenly thousands of their users who download standard versions of MS office apps to face these exact same issues I encountered early on

#

We may discuss and talk about pro/contra of Windows all day long but what I do not discuss is precisely that. MS suddenly trying to limit our freedom of how to use the software and suddenly changing settings without our consent or informing us, i.e. legal violation in plain words

brisk inlet
# green escarp i have no problems with edge but ok

again "edgewebview2" is not related to edge web browser because this runs in the background even if you completely removed edge browser from your system... at this point you either have idea of this or you do not.
https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-edge/webview2/?cs=4112006293&form=MA13LH
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/microsoft-edge-webview2-hogging-50-to-70-of-cpu/c6b19bce-f64a-4a70-b4ba-286613c9215a
Even an official MS agent and moderator recommended you to run powershell back in July 2024 but that was reversed by MS itself with another update later on, so we were no longer able to remove it entirely because it was fully integrated into MS Outlook and other apps, so even if you tried to remove it, you suddenly faced a warning popup telling you that you risk instability of the app plus missing out "features" whatever the fuck that is.

green escarp
#

why would you remove edge

brisk inlet
#

Since we fixed it manually before MS, I'm not sure if MS ever released a hotfix or not but even now if you start MS Outlook you suddenly have a popup of at least 6 task lines all named as "Microsoft Edge Webview2" without explanation what exactly this does. With our custom fix we managed to remove the sudden surge of cpu workload between 50-70% wich can seriously affect every employee's productivity. We also recommended to every business user to stay away from the new beta version of Outlook because that seems to trigger the extreme passive workload. Just like Nvidia containers eating away 15% despite no game running and other crap like Adobe nobody needs to understand

#

At least now Outlook runs passively with 0.1-0.9% CPU load and not 50-70% which is insane

brisk inlet
# green escarp why would you remove edge

until this edgewebview2 thing is fully documented and fixed, we decided to remove edge to isolate the problem down to this edgewebview2. I'm not really fixated on single browers myself, we usually have two. In the past we had Chrome and Opera but ever since Opera was taken over by Chinese, we had to say goodbye.

#

i need to find newer stuff

narrow grove
#

I'm biased in the fact I think the animators made choices when animating and interpolation basically spits on them

but at the same time I can be generous and say models probably can't do a good job because they weren't trained on drawn media

#

Also high framerate anime is probably super rare

warped spire
#

I agree specific training will help

#

as far as the artistic side

narrow grove
warped spire
#

thats more of a, ask the artists

#

some of them would prob use it as a tool if its available

#

some wouldn't

#

i imagine hit or miss like that

narrow grove
#

I think drawn animation has issues that might not be solved very easily from a model that just looks at the output video. If you want more frames I think the solution is pretty much gonna be to pay the artists to well... draw more

warped spire
#

a tool is a tool, I think a specifically trained AI would be very good at filling in-between frames

#

and that use-case doesn't get rid of artists, its just a tool in their toolkit

#

that makes them more productive

#

as you said before, noone is going to afford artists to draw at 60-120fps

narrow grove
#

I'm not making a statement about artist's right to work. I'm saying interpolating something that's animated in twos is gonna look horrible because there's a hung frame inbetween everything

warped spire
#

potentially yea, may need more drawn frames anyway to increase accuracy of generation

narrow grove
#

But yeah sure, a tool for the artist is never a bad thing

warped spire
#

honestly the best place to apply this is in the studio

#

so it can be adjusted and tuned

#

otherwise there will be artifacts

#

for anything this decade

narrow grove
#

I guess I just never look at anime and go "this needs 60fps" so the whole thing feels kinda moot to me. Maybe those that get very quick confusing fight scenes à la jason bourne could benefit

warped spire
#

i mean noone needs 60fps movies either

#

and playing at 30fps I never really questioned getting more in games

#

i imagine it restricts the types of things an artist can portray, or rather, how they portray them

narrow grove
#

Some could benefit for sure, but most drawn media has been working with that limitation for almost a hundred years now, it's still a nod in 3D animation as well

#

Restrictions are a good and bad thing imo

warped spire
#

I'd say, it is a good option, and artificially saying, this is the way because that is how its been done is as silly as saying WE MUST HAVE THE 60FPS!

#

like I said before, it prob is way way way easier adjustment to watching than the terrible 3d model cgi anime

narrow grove
warped spire
#

i mean early tech is early tech

this is a technology, for the area of media, is growing insanely fast in capability

#

still in the early, exponential gains in capability, phase

narrow grove

warped spire

but answers my question, we don't currently have a good general purpose AI system for interposing frames

narrow grove

warped spire

but I see a lot of interest in it

narrow grove
#

Blender has grown so much over the years it's kinda crazy

warped spire
#

I don't really like 3d to 2d tbh lol

#

but I acknowledge that type of thing has gotten better

narrow grove
#

It's really helpful for anime studios as well. Quick reframing/panning shots is so much easier when you don't have to do the perspective work yourself

brisk inlet
# warped spire i mean noone needs 60fps movies either

it would make more sense to have dynamic fps, to ramp up when its needed, especially in high motion scenes because these scenes simply suck with low 24fps.
Even in games I simply do not believe that you need insanely high fps and insanely high refresh rate all the time.

#

especially since most movies are a bunch of cut scenes patched together again, there is not really an excuse to try out dynamic fps range

#

After shifting from 16fps to 24fps, industry blames cost and they say it was "impossible" to record sound to the movie at a higher fps which was already a lie one decade later after the standard was set. It was simply a decision based on cost and profit. Even professionals in that industry now say, that is no longer an issue anymore

#

While most gamers and TV users are getting used to 4k as standard, we're still far from it, it's still no standard at all.

#

These days more and more people have access to fiber, ok covid disclosed the truth that Europe totally sucks with its current broadband capacity, the lockdown literally crashed the entire internet thanks to sudden surge of data volume, but still we're now talking about 4k, fiber, ai and still stuck with 24fps as ancient standard

Hm I am experiencing something strange. For some reason even though I can max down/upload speeds, everything I do over the internets feels extremely sluggish.

shy perch
wooden tendon

I want to think it is latency

I have 83 ms ping to a server that I should have 25 ms ping

Or I have some rogue route through a vpn

or do you use the actual modem they give you

I use their modem thing

shy perch

i think theyre usually ass but almost always given on a lease, so if you use another one you have to keep theirs stored somewhere even if you change isp after 10 yrs

Sure but something must have happened 3 days ago

all boils down to blown capacitors man

Could be an issue at isp side honestly

But my signal strength is pretty bad apparently

Even tho Windows says all bars

I will look into installing my own modem and upgrade to wifi 7, clearly the only way to solve this is to throw more money at it

brisk inlet
# wooden tendon Funny thing is the ISP device only has 1 gbit ports so I have to use wifi 6 to g...

That's not a funny thing, it's simply a world wide marketing fuckup. People just want high numbers, so many ISPs just played with numbers Nvidia style, providing >1Gbits but not explaining to consumers they first need to upgrade their own LAN cables, switch if there is any and needless to say home owners need to pay this on their own and tenants are not entitled to such upgrades.
In Switzerland first thing they did was providing WIFI6 too, its cheaper and most people suddenly want wireless, brands such as Apple pushing that since years too.

#

Later they added 2.5 port which isn't exactly a smart move either. It took them 2-3y until every ISP upgraded to 10gbit port while some providers can go as fast as 25gbit but private consumers will never find out since they would first have to spend lot of money first just to find out whether its true or not.

#

Even business customers including me had to wait 1y until the provided router supported 10gbits

#

But their strategy worked out pretty well because no normal person, regardless of private or business, does need more than 1gbits at all time. afaik complaint quota was pretty low especially in private sector

#

business customers with SLA obviously complained because they pay a lot more money and demanded refund for the "fake" 10gbit advertised and wrong equipment delivered because we're speaking of a minimum of 30/month for the speed upgrade and another 50/month for the guarantee of that speed totalling 150/month for the cheapest SME business fiber with lowest possible SLA.

brisk inlet
# wooden tendon Could be an issue at isp side honestly

yes or maybe a hub between connection a/b overloaded just like it happened everywhere during covid lockdown and everyone streaming porn at home. I highly recommend to use your own modem/router if your ISP provides such flexibility, I did the same although I will probably have to get away from Cisco since they suddenly want subscription bullshit

I have some customers that have the whole hardware reserved to them yes, they can use the system to create/remove servers as they please

ember finch
#

neat, did you use any open source stuff besides docker or all custom?

I've built the whole backend in python from scratch, frontend is just a react "app" that wraps an API all customers can access using their own scripts. Over the next couple months will probably make the system distributed to remove the centralized database.

It's specialized in Reforger (and then Arma 4 in the future), so it has some cool features all the "game panels" dont have, like abstracting RCON behind a simple HTTP API, or a button press to build a full dependency tree of all the mods you are using. I am usually not happy with the things I make but this project is coming along quite nicely.

Still, plenty of work left to do.

The pure incompetence was Torvalds having entirely forgot to actually ever cut the release for a few hours because he got distracted during his usual Sunday afternoon window, while thegreat news is that an improved version of the NTSYNC driver is now part of the Linux kernel itself; this driver had been proposed for the kernel over a year ago to better emulate Windows NT synchronization primitives, thereby improving the performance of Windows gaming via Wine/Proton for Linux distros in general and not just the Steam Deck; it was initially added in kernel 6.10 only to be marked broken, and that's apparently been lifted in 6.14: https://www.pcgamer.com/software/linux/linus-torvalds-admits-pure-incompetence-for-missing-the-new-linux-6-14-kernel-deadline-but-all-is-forgiven-as-the-update-is-great-news-for-non-windows-gaming/

And it's all down to an improved NTsync driver.

Also on the Linux front... so far the proof of concept is based on Fedora, the KDE Plasma desktop environment and open-source software, intended to serve as a base upon which national, regional, sector, and organizational-specific layers can be implemented to define a clear and transparent hierarchy of responsibility for software and configuration. Each layer to EU OS would only contain the very specifics for their use cases and users. Using common layers allows them to pool responsibility at the appropriate level so that teams close to the end users can keep their focus on their specific environment.: https://www.zdnet.com/article/eu-os-takes-a-layered-approach-to-its-new-linux-distro-for-the-public-sector/

**wont let me upload image here. but its basically a pop up that lists a number of files that will be sent in with the crash report. nothing specific. I have no issues with any other games on my pc and like I said it just started randomly happening

Did chrome get slower with the recent update somehow lol

wooden tendon

Zomg chrome bad

#

Well, now it might be, since it became slower. Wonder if it's an extension.

@spice cypress @placid pike I think I saw someone with almost the same issue
Their fix was rollback GPU drivers iirc
I think they had an Nvidia GPU
@main bolt What GPU do you have and which driver version did you roll back to to fix the crashing?

I made my server admin panel faster for my users by disabling ipv6 on cloudflare wicked

#

Otherwise it would stall for like 6 seconds randomly for them, weird

brisk inlet
#

but wasn't that already reported officially on cloudflare too?

#

they say there are several factors but one seems inhouse: limitation in how cloudflare handles ipv6

#

you may try out their suggested solutions, maybe it helps

wooden tendon
#

The funny part is you can only disable it through the API not on the website

I need to create a custom map in VBS 3 without terratools can it be done?

I would expect the answer to be no.
Because most of it is using proprietary file formats.
You at least need their tools to convert from public formats to theirs

Why does explorer.exe need 288 threads when I have no folders open

#

Is there a Windows tool that prevents non-Windows/MS background processes from running until I accept a prompt when they are attempted to be started?

river pollen
#

explorer.exe also hosts the taskbar and start menu

wooden tendon
#

Ah so it's one thread per entry in the start menu

wooden tendon
#

What would be amazing is some kind of app that can link programs to services, and force stop those services when said program isnt running, and start them when the program starts. This means all the background slop garbage only runs when needed and does not pollute my memory when unused.

#

Everyone has a stupid app with background services now.

A traditional buffer-heavy approach might need tens of GB, but AMD's demo holds onto just 51 KB of persistent state per frame—a mind-boggling 99.9999% reduction compared to conventional methods.

One federal state in Germany turned away from MS entirely by switching to Linux and LibreOffice. Denmark now follows as the first country to move away from MS Office too. There are more promising trends in cities and government divisions. This should help to boost EU OS chances as well as consumer hopes

#

Obviously the tensions from US helped a lot too but I'm glad MS is losing grounds, recently they have been a fucking pain with their "move to win11" campaigns

wooden tendon
#

My condolences. LInux desktop isnt there yet and MS Office is still best in its category.

Being the first usually gets bloody. I shall wait and see

#

Long time ago Staroffice was hailed as best alternative until their parent company started a ridiculous war with MS instead of focusing on what they do best, softwares. Now someone else salvaged what was left of StarOffice/Openoffice and call it LibreOffice

#

funny thing is Oracle wasn't interested in office I guess because they took over everything else

wooden tendon
#

Honestly I'd understand libreoffice if your usage is very limited but going to linux desktop is just shooting yourself in the foot productivity-wise

Good luck training all your employees on how to use the terminal

Lets be honest, what productivity do gov-guys really have? blobcloseenjoy No offense for exceptions there but those guys are the monsters of bureaucracy and the very definition of inefficiency.
They cannot even handle Windows properly

#

quiet frankly if it wasn't for free cash roll, I wouldn't bother dealing with them because they are as dumb as fuck and I've seen lot of bad crops in private sector too

#

I really hope to see some meaningful progress with Linux Desktop. I wouldn't mind to switch but things need to be solid first

wooden tendon
#

Exactly, if they struggle with Windows they're going to struggle more with Lunix

brisk inlet
#

They probably think "can't be worse" or... their old workforce is soon retiring and their transition plan counts on education for fresh supply of new workforce being either more linux-friendly or at least capable of learning it faster

#

time will tell, latest in 2026 we should hear more

wooden tendon
#

Lol as if the new generation knows how to use a keyboard and mouse

#

First question on the job for them is going to be why do they have so many physical save game icons in their office

brisk inlet
#

they can only swipe with their fingers, lets hope Linux is ready for that too 🙈
