I just did -- got a ||Spectrum Device activity notification||, turned to the specified frequency, and it was ||an unidentified guy going 'yeah we have a military radio, you gonna tell the rest of us what's going on?'|| followed by ||Grey Wolf telling the squad(s) to go dark as comms were compromised||, just as if ||I'd messed up attempts to deal with Echo squad||
hmmm actually that sounds famliar but been an age since I ran into it.
I'm guessing that it was ||one of the Looters who can be spotted if you go on the side objective to investigate in the south of the main objective||
there a few of them scattered about, think I found two camps in the past not sure if they were looters or civi campers. one of them had a radio on them but they were all killed.
Hmm, already when you got there?
yep whole camp was wiped out was a small camp like couple dome tents, campfire and sleepingbags
Not sure how to clear the first objective in the fourth mission when ||the LDF already went radio-silent because of said AI I-presume-Looters||
How do I use nvgs I am spamming n nothing
NVGs, lights etc in Contact become defunct after the ||EMP caused by the alien ship's arrival a bit later|| disables them.
can somebody tell me where they put the multiplayer button?
Contact by default does not support multiplayer due to the heavy scripting used for majority of the modules. You will either have to unload the DLC to play MP with whatever Contact stuff is in base-game (no aliens, limited EMSPEC usage), or use this mod: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1822535369
Stability is not guaranteed at all, though.
BTW that mod only adds the ability to join multiplayer, it does not edit any functions or systems for multiplayer compatibility.
@\Radium ||Scottish accent It's not an EMP, it's more of a high power microwave pulse||
||except it is an EMP||
||

||
||an EMP is an ElectroMagnetic Pulse, microwaves are a type of electromagnetic radiation, ergo a "high power microwave pulse" is an EMP||
||qUaNtuM||
||well yes, but actually no, but actually yes, but actually no||
well problem being i want to play the livonia map but the stupid game tells me i have to have contact loaded to do it
what does that have to do with contact? @light badger
@last quail have you bought the contact DLC?
He has to have since he's loaded up contact, no? @dry wren
like apex the map is still there in the map selection screen even if you don't have the dlc
but of course you can't access it until you have said dlc
maybe zaptoman though livonia was not part of contact

can somebody tell me where they put the multiplayer button?
Him asking that tells me that he has contact
oh right
now I understand what he means
@dry wren yes I have the contact DLC, but you should be able to get in and edit the map, play multiplayer etc, without having to do anything special (IE APEX and every other Arma mod)
every other Arma DLC, excuse me
i'd like to be able to edit the map i made without having to exit back out of the game, click on contact under DLC, and restart.
that applies for everything but maps
you can't play in tanoa without apex
I mean you cant edit livonia anyways but yeah you should be able to play livonia without contact loaded
yes but with Apex enabled you don't have to quit the game to play multiplayer
thats weird though
I have contact and it lets me get in livonia just fine
Contact is the only DLC which scrubs multiplayer from the game menu
probably because of the module incompatibility
also the contact button is a different game from the contact in the main platform
it has more assets and modules
Yeah the multiplayer button is removed because of incompatabilities, having contact loaded is only really to play the campaign or make missions with contact stuff
so people who don't have contact can still play on livonia? didn't know that
I think so?
just tried without contact loaded and yep I can open up livonia in the editor
oh I knew that
but you still own the dlc I guess
would you be able to play a mission in livonia if you didn't have it?
Oh yeah no you have to own the dlc to play on livonia
you just dont need to have it loaded
sorry for the misunderstanding
oh alright, thats what I was meaning
Ah oki
@misty charm The problem is if you make missions with contact stuff say the tractor, or a new weapon, now if you'd like to play multiplayer in that mission, the only way to do it is from the launcher.
this has never been the case. Arma would just tell you if you tried to use whatever it was that you had to have the DLC
not true there is very lil contact stuff that requires contact loaded. most of it is global.
and if you make missions with the exclusive stuff dont have to do it only via launcher 'contact button' -mod=contact will do the same thing.
there's two different parts to contact - "contact", and contact platform
contact platform works the same way that Apex content does, and it contains the livonia map, uniforms, weapons, etc
the contact that you get when you click play contact, is additional assets/scripts/etc that support the campaign, and these are largely not compatible with anything that isn't the campaign
Well, i get two errors. One is for the contact UI and the other is for characters, uniforms and clothing. === Missing Addons ===
A3_Characters_F_Contact
A3_UI_F_Contact
yup thats because stuff you used inside of contact isn't present in the platform
why you may ask
because people are whining kids
🇫🇷 🥖 🙌
anyone does have the olive carrier rig texture?
if you mean a contact texture unlikely, contact still encrypted.
@harsh zinc afair there is template available in a3 samples
really? didnt found that
@harsh zinc afair there is template available in a3 samples
@sterile mesa
ah right, plate carrier is missing
if you don't want to wait, there are some tricks to get that texture though
one of it is creating UI and showing texture there (tex path can be retrived from hiddenSelectionsTextures)
there other ways as well but they bring in legal questions, even something ingame was questionable (in my mind) only reason I didnt suggest anything.
like
there alot of mods already with it
just wanna know if someone has it in olive (original) color
I would love to see if voice comms will be made to replace the TS mod, TFAR and the need for it. tbh that would make multiplayer a lot less a hassle to setup
Related to contact DLC how?
it's how you contact people
for the campaign, yes
the assets and map are also nice but not that many, mostly reskins and people barely play on livonia.
is contact used in mp at all?
uhh
well the normal stuff
can be
but no functions
you can make a private sv with scripts and stuff
but normally no.
you can use all the stuff in the SP campaign just the MP mission would require 'contact' loaded I have a MP campaign that does this because it uses the crater and dome area from the campaign as part of the lead into the storyline. If I didnt use those assets and only stuck with the ?platform? ones then it wouldnt be needed. other thing was the mothership and drones need it also... problem is 'hud' issues.
I use stuff from contact in basically every single mission I make
So one question. Why are certain particles like placeable fires and some attachments like the SIMCOM adapter only available when loading the Contact expansion? Why not add them to the base game inside the contact dlc?
I dont necessarely also mean the alien stuff though
Pretty sure all attachments for the electronic device are in the regular Arma 3 update. They are basically barrel attachments.
I could be wrong though.
I could not put a SIMCOM adapter without having contact loaded
@gray scroll I specified that above
https://discordapp.com/channels/105462288051380224/585095800334581771/698397229995655188
sigh
I mean what would REALLY be nice is if some one built a chemical warfare mod around all the sexy chem stuff.
But sadly the only one running is still broken since ACE update.
I just use the Stalker anomaly mod’s fog for cbrn
@gray scroll you can put SIMCOM - it's hidden from Virtual Arsenal if Contact is not loaded though
Ah that makes sense.
simcom what? oh you mean the Miles adapter... yeah sadly thats 'Contact' only and the chemical detector is a watch (but is platform and not exclusive). and it works but its not coded to do anything there no event handlers on it. use a area trigger with a CBA XEH?, unless arma has a smoke detection ability... area trigger would be the simple way use distance to center to control the chemical level strength curve.
and yeah sadly Ace does break the Miles system, I keep ace unloaded till I start the 2nd mission in the campaign. after that just need it set for bandages also stitch wounds (cuz you dont ever get adv medical gear dropped.) and keep the medical on basic with no fractures.
@opaque ember it's not Contact only. Its in the platform but hidden
lemme check Im in VR still without it. happen to know the name cuz I got zero hits on 'simcom' even in config
if ya dont I can load up the campain and zeus it out I'd just have to reload a few times.
Im guessing you were refering to simcom cuz the chem detector def isnt hidden. its straight up on CBRN woodland by default 🙂
`muzzle_tma_65' yep its in the cfg's without contact. interesting... re: Simcom/Miles adapter
How do you use battleye to join severs ? And do you need dlc and mods?
Alr mate calm it

posting in correct place according the #rules is what keeps the channels tidy and on topic
and keeps users on the server
Whats the tactical operations center called
Is the hacking UGVs feature a script specific to the contact campaign, or does it affect all UGVs?
I have found my answer
It is specific to the campaign
Well does anybody know how to script?
We need to have a hacking UGV feature in editor and multiplayer
check the modules?
I could swear that I saw the "is UAV hacker" checkbox on the editor somewhere, but it could be because of ACE
I think thats ace
I think he means the hacking with the radio gun thing
UAV hacker thing is a vanilla mechanic. Basically if your flagged as a UAV operator, you can "hack" drones. By hack I mean you can go up to a enemy drone and do a action option that allows you to switch sides.
WHat is the best thing with arma 3 contact in your opinion?
The map itself is really good, and the campaign too. Not the same style as the other one but pretty enjoyable
well contact dlc is say, unusual forr me.not many games let you have the realsim, the spetsnaz(Good guys toward the end) the devices, etc
so it is quite good
in contact map is good but i think the best aspect of it is the Electronic Warfare part
that has to be incorporated into Arma 4 IMO
I would imagine that implementing proper EW would be difficult outside of heavily scripted campaigns.
Things like drone jamming with the spectrum device would be fine, as would intercepting side/team radio channels.
But how would you implement things like message spoofing or recording transmissions?
as if that was not possible?
you can have functionality in game that would record even player communication
and if BI would want to really really surprise us then even AI module with voice syntethization capabilities is possible
provided ofcourse that enough of player communication is recorded so that the AI has enough voice samples to mimic player voice
but i don't know how CPU intensive the voice sampling and synthetization would be
The spoofing in Contact is all based on prerecorded samples though.
AI spoofing would be feasible but players are a different matter.
but i don't know how CPU intensive the voice sampling and synthetization would be
GPU intensive. And very. Enough to have people rage that they don't want to waste their GPU doing that, instead of rendering the graphics.
Have I mentioned privacy issues with a game making you say whatever it wants?
What?
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
GPU intensive. And very. Enough to have people rage that they don't want to waste their GPU doing that, instead of rendering the graphics.
Have I mentioned privacy issues with a game making you say whatever it wants?
@full lynx regarding the privacy issues- yea it crossed my mind that would be probably the biggest showstopper
@smoky nest thats just a straight out lie
@dry wren it’s not ?
I don’t have any dlc yet when I use cup with the other CW one it works?
also wrong channel
Idk, lets me do it, not that I use the map because it’s too big
never mind figured it out
They probably have a class name and are just hidden in the arsenal. Find em in config viewer, spawn class name like usual
There are defunct NVG that do not function as normal NVG goggles, they will have Defunct in their name in the inventory.
I assume this is to simulate them failing after an EMP or other electoral pulse.
@mossy mauve
@compact sapphire defunt. stands for defunctionable probably and i assume you are right with that assumption
it makes completely sense
Why does contact have such a low performance compare to other Scenario / map ?
its mainly the intro, lots of animations, AIs and props, when you get into the real game it gets stable
I got frame drop in the middle of the game, and make me not enjoying the scenraio, tried pretty much every setting ^^
plus livonia, forests
Lag with Arma??
Not lag. But poor framerate. The flush of virtual memory seems to help
i tried to hacking drones multiple times but all they do is to attack me after it
i do it at very close range and aim its antenna but i still get same results
Any idea how to take its control?
Why is fps so low
Because you don't have a quantum computer...
SP has good FPS on a good system, MP depends on client and server systems.
I believe the campaign also forces certain graphical and view distance settings for the purpose of various events that happen.
guys i need your help. i am in this side (?) mission where i have to contact them aylmaos. what do i need to do?
if this is a spoiler free area, i would be glad if you could dm me. I've been trying for hours now
You wondered what do you need to do with those signals?
Though I replied to your wonder I also have kinda no clue with lmaos ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I don't know why Contact doesn't have better reviews. It's quite a nice experience.
Because too many people didnt read that it was single player and others falsely expected underground terrain despite the latter being an engine limitation.
Hm, I guess so. Well besides maybe some optimization/performance issues
I run an older PC setup (from 2013) so, they don't have much to complain about.
I just joined where do we usually talk?
That depends on the topics. Simply check the channel descriptions, and make sure you check #rules

Might be a dumb question, what's canon and what isn't? I know Livonia, LDF and such are canon in (Vanilla) Arma 3, and what about Electron-39 Exercise?
I'm gonna guess nothing is canon
maybe Livonia is but this disparity thing has no sense in the first place
The whole event if im correct is not cannon but the exercise is and yea ldf is too
I hope VRANA didn't actually bankrupt in the canon because I'm using it as a plot device in so many missions
It didnt. But it kinda fell apart and can be eaten up by another company very easily
considering how ramified it is it probably cut off the outer branches and kept the main income stuff like ION
Hello, How can I get back to the basic home screen with the Contact DLC ?
By disabling the contact add-on in the launchers dlc page @mossy mauve
And would I still have access to the pack vehicles?
Vehicles? There's no vehicles that added by Contact except Aliens
You'll have access to everything thats in the platform update part of the DLC (called enoch)
*enoch
Okay thanks
ive noticed some workshops have the EM Device thingy from Contacts Campaign but the actual DLC isnt needed. how do creators put it in missons with out needing the DLC?
Base functions of the device are built in to vanilla
hello
...And he's gone, just like the mothership did
Hello, what is it that you wanted to discuss about the Arma Contact DLC? @remote terrace
hello
Henlo
So with the chemical detector what is considered the "Threat"?
Like what was the original idea behind it?
I am honestly not sure
All I know is it provides a clock in digital which is easier to tell the time, but for anyone who doesn’t know the 1-12 system by heart, it might be harder to give direction.
Yea, I love the digital clock
I fiddled with the framework and really like the idea, just not quiet sure how to explain it to some one that would play my missions
Like should it just be a constant monitor? Going from 0-10 depending on how "dangerous" the area is, or something that indicates codes?
Wait is your mission to do with radioactivity?
It's probably going to do both, I'm just looking for ways to make use of all this cool Enoch stuff.
After finding out you can go up to 9.99 though I think it might be cooler to do chemical codes.
Basically player looks at the area, gets the code, then needs to look it up to find out what it is.
There is a good working Geiger Counter in ARMA 3 Epoch mod...
I want to intergrate the vanilla systems first.
How i can download a mod for a zone of radioactivity or chemical zone for using in editor
@uncut copper If there is a mod, you just subscribe to it
It probably has instructions to use on the workshop page
hello
I once checked a steam forum post about people questioning why there was CTRG gear in a campsite on some part of Livonia and I was inclined to believe that they were doing some shifty stuff, but then I read an AAN article about Exercise Electron before talking with Stype on how to combat militarized toasters
With regards to configs, how can I find the class inheritance of the CBRN suits which have camouflage patterns? Since I want to change their mass also, but I can't find which class they use other than Uniform_Base since the mass isn't changing on them and it seems that Contact's PBOs are encrypted.
Just look them in in-game config viewer
I tried that @agile hatch, but the parents were exactly the same as blue and white CBRN suits.
Anything else I can look at then or?
I know Contact is still somewhat 'new', but what's up with it only being 33% off?
Because somewhat “new”?
I know, but...
Were now a month away from Contacts anniversary.
I'm not trying to make a big point, it's just food for thought.
Anyway, that's the discount rate they decided to put on Arma 3 Contact.
Also, it's been 11 months after its release huh? Time flies like an AFO
^ Has it really been 11 months?
You can really see how steam is changing the gaming market that people now EXPECT that thing will go onto a radical sale basically always there is any sale
I bet their sales have resulted in an ever growing decline in overall profit.
When there are regular guaranteed sales, people stop buying as much. Or, alternatively, stop paying full price.
just means that the market moves towards the true value of products faster
in that regard, epic and steam are doing a great job improving the free market
So, I just found out that you can get the spectrum device in the base game with out having to go through contact. (Still got to have the DLC). What can I use the SD for in the base game? I don’t see any of the special modules.
It's a “cosmetic” in base game, though it's possible to make a custom functionality via some sort of scripting. As some documentation suggests, many of Contact assets have scripted functionality that work only in First Contact
I been messing with the chemical detector, I'm hoping to mess with the spectrum device as well. Although I thought Reyhard made a sample mission for the base scripted version?
wait the chemical detector has any use? @calm crescent
@wispy maple there should be functions to use it as regular drone jammer. If I remember correctly there should be wiki page describing it
@dry wren Not in the campaign, but it has scriptable UI.
oh right
thinking about it
the clock slot has a lot of potential
It has a threat meter that can go from 0.0 0 to 9.9 9
So I'm basically going by codes, IE 1.3 5 is X chemical why 2.9 4 is Y chemical.
@sterile mesa is that so? We’re would I find these functions and do they actually work at jamming drones?
https://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma_3_Spectrum_Device
Spectrum device for none-contact info
Thanks! Real quick, what do I put the scripts in?
A lot
Do the scripts go into a module, a trigger or....what?
Depends on what your trying to do i guess
Usually theyre put in a trigger or in a .sqf file
Or in a unit’s init box
Ok cool
Is the contact dlc worth it?
If you like these go for it:
- New Eastern-Europe themed terrain
- Story-driven campaign
If you're looking for these you probably will disappoint:
- Weapons
- Vehicles
the LDF rifles aren't that bad
and the double shotty is nice
not to talk about the spectrum device
RPK is nice too
I mean, Contact does offer few weapons and vehicles unlike Apex
is the promet rifle good? im debating on using it in a scenario
I like it.
it feels very 2035
nice design on an existing fire model
and the masterkey is pretty fun
I just played the first mission for the first time. Damn that UAV caught me off guard.
hello
@agile hatch who that, Ewardoo?
Yes
Hi @remote terrace; I indeed could review your chat history: please note that just saying "hi" or "😄" without any conversation contribution is deemed as spam. Now, don't do it again, as it is against the #rules. If you infringe them willfully, you will be removed. Thank you.
it feels very 2035

and the masterkey is pretty fun
It's a shame you can't use shotguns as "master-keys" in Arma which is the niche role shotguns are mostly resigned to in today's modern militaries. Maybe there's a way to script breaching shotgun functionality.
@south shore I feel like I've seen something like that in arma before
@tropic hamlet That would fit more in #production_releases 🙂
Removed
how are you
just in case you didn't know: this channel is to discuss the contact DLC, not to seek contact to users 😉
people mix that up sometimes
maybe this should be renamed to contact_dlc_discussion 😄
I agree
I mean it's in the category "Arma 3 Expansions"
He did it like for weeks, why not just warn him?
already done, just didn't delete the message
hi guys and gals
I just purchased Contact on steam
and discovered that I doesnt install with the linux version, can someone confirm or not-confirm ?
Did you enabled Contact?
Linux version is 2 years old.
contact itself is a singleplayer campaign, so on one hand not much need to install it on a server.
Ah
Way before Contact
Assuming you mean server?
If you play on linux with proton (which you should) you'll have it
No, Linux native client, with linux native steam
i play arma3 like this for moths
just fine 🙂
Please use proton instead
?? creasy
you get latest version, and I heard even better performance
and multiplayer support (without battleye)
Well, I need BE, sorry 🙂

Does BE actually work on the native executables? (experimental ports) I always thought it doesn't
it somewhat does I think
Yes it works server and client side perfectly 🙂
Wow... that was unexpected, actually! 🤔
Too bad the proton version doesn't have BE working. I'm trying to get a friend into Arma but he refuses to install Windows just to play a game 😦 (and we're planning to play on BE-enabled servers, not just ours)
😋
he is a good guy 🙂
man.., I wasted so mnay years in BF, discovering arma is like a new life
have guys experienced Vulkan in some games ?
I have games almost doubling FPS wwith it enabled
looks like there is a bug, asking me to wait to be able to type, i waited, i still cant, so this is a test by modifing an older message, sorry for the spam
yeah it can't
because that linux version is 1.82, contact didn't exist yet, the engine doesn't even support the features that contact requires
yup, I got only half of all the DLC to work in the 182
State your problem and then we'll be able to tell you that
Not that I can help with that, personally, but:
- How is this related to the Contact DLC? (that's the channel you're writing in)
- We can't help you if you don't provide more details. At this point it's literally just "my game doesn't work"
You probably want to try #arma3_troubleshooting (and add that additional information that is missing here)
Question on something in the Contact DLC campaign:
SPOILER: ||Every now and then, I'll get a very faint transmission on my spectrum device, at around 78.24 Mhz, all the way to the far left. Anyone know what the source is? I'm already blaming CTRG on this one||
do you want to know? because I know
I'd like to know!
||It's Spetsnaz||
||Somewhere southeast-ish you can even find a dead Spetsnaz, in a building close ish to an LDF warehouse/armour storage they destroyed||
||you can often follow the signal to find interesting stuff||
Are you sure ||its Spetsnaz? I've done the campaign and detected their transmissions many times (even followed a Spetsnaz team for 10 minutes, 50 meters behind them). They never operated on 78.24. What's weird is that this transmission is barely in the radio transmission spectrum. Oh, and I found that place before. Was pretty interesting actually. Found a Spetsnaz squad just south of it moving in the forest||
||huh, I might be wrong then. the Spetsnaz do have an encrypted channel you can pick up though. Are you sure you're not accidentally picking up the mothership or the scout then?||
It seems like ||the only time I get to listen to that transmission is on the notification bar on the top. Even if I spend the entire time with my spectrum device on, I only get the transmission no more than 5 times throughout the entire campaign||
||I'm pretty sure its not the mothership or scout. That transmission is operating on VHF, which is 100% just human transmissions. I'm betting its a CTRG easter egg simply because there's a lot of CTRG easter eggs in the campaign||
||The question is, is this just bait, or can you actually follow the signal and find CTRG? Hmm...||
||It's been a while since I played so I can't recall at all what the Spetsnaz frequency is, but I'm pretty sure it's the only encrypted signal you can find||
||and the frequency you mentioned does seem familiar||
||I'm currently replaying the campaign. IIRC all Spetsnaz transmissions are in the 80's. And, at least you can detect them. But this one? Naaah||
||if you really wanna try to find the CTRG (idk if they are) without putting effort into it get one of those singleplayer cheat menu mods so you can search for them||
CTRG was participating in Exercise Electron, about 1,000 of their guys were in it during the time of Exercise Electron. That info can be found out in one of the couple laptops in the building you go to Stype in.
CTRG isn't as far as I know, up to anything screwy but I'm pretty sure BI left stuff like their thermal combat fatigues, and some other stuff as more of an easter egg. Or just some additional things to protect the player through their travels within a polish forest
||Just got a transmission on 78.24. I was on the Spectrum Device at the time, and didn't even see any spike or anything.||
||Seems like the only clue I have to that frequency is on the top notification bar. Hell, at that point it may as well be background radio waves||
||Man, these Spetsnaz really need to up their rear security game. I've been 50 meters behind them for a good 15 minutes as they were fighting LDF south of Swarog at the vehicle depot. Got some cool pictures on them too.||
Antistasi
yes that makes sense
Hey just curious, does anyone know what the biext_collision dll's do for the contact dlc?
Sorry to ask, didn’t play a few months.
Are the DLC maps free to play for all? We are setting up right now our server, and we might wanna use Livonia or Weferlingen map. But not all of us own the DLCs
Tanoa, Livonia and Weferlingen are restricted for non-owners of Arma 3 Apex, Arma 3 Contact and Global Mobilization, so you guys have to own Expansion/DLC to play
One thing I found weird about Livonia is that even when the Livonian Defense Force is a NATO backed and supplied (I think) army, they don't have kneepads
Soft Livonia soil means saving money on the budget for knee pads 😄
Also I don't think they are supplied, they funded themselves.
They just do training with other countries.
Yes
Very
I would say it's like....2nd favorite.
aliens yes, to fight no
I was hoping for it to be like War of The Worlds or something
No it's not so obvious 😮
It's very good as a sci-fi story

Invaders: Alien Invasion SP Op
@weary terrace I mean, we always have the mass effect mod on the workshop to simulate our militaries getting stomped by reapers/geth/ bartarians ect.
Also, how do I black out my text, I want to put down a spoiler that I thought was a bit...funny
you put two | on each side of the text
like this ||test||
which gives this ||test||
||test||
Cool
Ok so here it is: ||can we just appreciate that, at the end, For the first time in Arma History, BLUFOR and OPFOR put aside there differences and team up?||
Straight up, I want answers about what happened with the Exercise Electron survivors after the Contact DLC ends
I'm honestly stupid glad on their spin of Russia in the current armaverse.
It's what appealed to me a lot about the Altis conflict as well, lots of gray area between all sides. Who forced what, who played who, ect.
@shell barn perhaps they ||after teaming up with the Russians|| formed a Armaverrse XCOM/ stargate program?
You saw what the aliens did to LDF and NATO during the DLC
Who forced what, who played who, ect. We honestly need a Miller emote...
I wounder what the Miller voice actor thinks of Miller.
Also yea, regarding the interactions between the people and the contact. It's what makes the story good I think, you have basically two sides of the coin. You have
The ||LDF who see a hostile entity that doesn't care if people die||
Then ||the NATO side which realizes that those deaths might not be intentional||
It's easier for NATO IMO to take their standpoint when it's not their country.
Just finished playing CONTACT campaign. Although the ending was abrupt, but the whole experience was fantastic. Sometimes I got Black mesa vibes(the ambient music), and sometimes S.T.A. L.K.E.R. vibes(when doing side missions). Could you guys recommend similar SP scenarios!? Thanks.
Ngl the stuff that Contact added to arma would be awesome to have if they worked and were released into the basegame. Imagine how cool it'd be to make an enemy UAV or UGV shut down, or have a soldier spy on enemy frequencies and relay the intel to command and whatnot
Basically do what you did in the singleplayer campaign but in multiplayer or even in the other campaigns
Like hearing radio dialogue that normally wouldn't be heard whilst playing as a specific unit
Most of that could be scripted into the base game by a modder, but it would take just that.
it'd be nice if BI shared their code but dunno if thats gonna happen
I'm pretty sure you can get it, several people already have attempted direct ports.
I think there’s is a mod for spectrum device functionality
It’s still being worked on though
is contact worth the buy? i really like the arma 3 campaigns and i think the whole alien idea is really cool. what are people's opinions on it who own it so far. plus livonia looks nice and i want to wear tin hats
i want to wear tin hats
Then defo it's worth it! :D
Contact is something special, not a haha gunfight go brrr thing, more like stealthy thing. But I really enjoyed First Contact campaign, for sure
i really like the arma 3 campaigns
and i think the whole alien idea is really cool
Then yes
I like arma campaigns and this one is one of my favourite campaigns
any thoughts on when the rest of contact could be decrypted?
I think contact decryption is currently not planned
oh :<
why do they encrypt in the first place?
To prevent people from stealing/cracking content on day one (or afterwards).
Or to hide some crimes of bad coding 🤣
the 2nd makes more sense
why encrypt the sidecontent and not the main game
Because some idiot could probably take it and make a "private mod" out of it, if it was not encrypted ;)
then why decrypt the main game @full lynx
I don't mean the full unlock like with A2
but at least being able to modify the textures with hiddenselections
I recall you can't with some gear items even if there are hiddenselections
The main game is not encrypted
because once you change a single byte in a pbo, you'd have to redownload the whole pbo
which makes updates a absolute chore, also we want to support modding. and encrypting all your stuff doesn't do that
but at least being able to modify the textures with hiddenselections
Encryption doesn't block that
I recall you can't with some gear items even if there are hiddenselections
I'm not aware of that?
I recall people had to take extra steps to get LDF gear textures without breaking the encryption
not sure if that changed
If you want to rip out the vanilla texture, yeah no.
yeah thats what I don't get
wouldn't you need said vanilla textures for retexturing?
but I understand why it would be annoying to decrypt the files update wise
still think it should happen eventually
No
you can make textures without having vanilla textures
but I understand why it would be annoying to decrypt the files update wise
No its the opposite of annoying
it would be not annoying?
I don't understand
you can make textures without having vanilla textures
what do you mean with that?
can't really retexture without the original
thats not retexturing
if I'd want to make a black version of a green vest knowing the UV locations won't help me that much
I think they are referring to just overriding the entire texture file, so it's perm stuck that way. Similar to how people re-texture Altis.
can't see why not just having it just like the vanilla non-contact game assets
so you can see textures and modify them like lets say, the nato carrier rig but in an orange version
It's the same question I asked why we can't have hidden selections for everything.
Like who cares if the building was met for a map usage? What if I want to change the texture? >.<
well making hiddenselections is considerably harder than unlocking textures
True
I wasn't talking about that
the contact objects have hidden selections where applicable
I also think there is a old request in the forums back in the day if BI could just release the actual photoshop or even painter camo patterns.
they do
and some props are even unlocked
but I'm pretty sure that the LDF gear isn't
Which LDF gear Sanchez? I'll check now
the vests I guess
yeah they're all ebos aside from some structures
and enviroement objects
Yep your right.
characters_f_enoch.ebo which would contain the textures for the vest.
I agree that they should be PBO'd at this point. For some reason I thought the conversation was specific to just the contact content. Which I can see why they won't bother.
yeah its time for enoch decrypt i guess, but afaik not next update. Maybe the one after

👀
Offtopic though related to ebo discussing, why does Tac-Ops had ebos still?
isn't that just missions?
Still had some textures
the helmets and those FIA apc skins?
Also “just missions” won't be a reason for me. Missions are jewels
they are but they're also less crucial for modding
But understand how the missions work is crucial for editing
Can be, yes
Did anyone else noticed that in the first mission ||Rudwell disabled the drone by opening the Arma editor making it a static object??|| I thought that was helarious!
what really?
lmao just checked
also noticed that I've never seen that screen in enoch
is it a contact exclusive? or just the desktop monitor from laws of war?
it's prop from Contact DLC - it's part of platform (Enoch)
how's it called I don't remember seeing it
Rugged something :D
It's probably called a computer
rugged laptop I think
defenitely not
https://imgur.com/a/5MOIfBa
of course the things on the bottoms are just the contact routers
bu looking closer that display may be from the older dlcs
maybe helicopters

Finally finished Contact. Overall a very positive, albeit short experience. I didn't get it sooner because of the price, so I waited for sales.
Generally a very well, mostly realistic made scenario about first contact that I thoroughly enjoyed.
Playing on a higher difficulty, I couldn't find my starting location on the map because there were no markers. I have no problem navigating the terrain without GPS, but I would have appreciated if I at least didn't have to extrapolate my starting location. Seems like an overlook.
I could not really see the point of the ||"mapping the network mission". The area was small enough, and the popup messages about increased activity were more than enough to find the 2 root tips. Anyone else find this whole mapping thing kind of unnecessary and wasted?||
Overall, one of the best atmospheres in ArmA to date. Running this with a i5 6600K, which isn't exactly the best CPU you can get today, I still had a pretty decent framerate. Rarely 20, often 40-60 so I guess the performance got a bit patched.
Despite the mostly excellent 6 story missions, I don't really see buying this for 25€.
Yes, the mapping thing was a cool idea, but after fiddling with it, it was just a lot easier to find them exploring with some basic guesses.
Also for difficulty, that is the point of higher difficulty. It removes the map markers.
You want to find a town, or something you can relate to on the map to get your bearings.
I understand that and finding my way and pos isn't the issue. The fact that even my base isn't marked is kind of strange. Just a nitpick I guess.
I also really liked the campaign
||Anyone else find this whole mapping thing kind of unnecessary and wasted||
I still don't understand how it was supposed to work 🤷♂️ . If anyone would like to explain how it was supposed to work, I'd really like to hear about it.

I still don't understand how it was supposed to work 🤷♂️ . If anyone would like to explain how it was supposed to work, I'd really like to hear about it.
what was the mapping thing again?
The thing when you were running with The tool ™️ and something was showing up on the map
And... that's all I know about it. I was running around until I found the mission objective. Sad but true 😦
you were supposed to ||follow the red (high) signatures I guess?|| seems much effort was put into this design and it didn't really do much
Yes and no. What I mean is that when I was moving, the map was being updated. And it was NOT static, meaning that the "heatmap" that was shown on the map (for a given (X,Y) point) was different depending on where I was. And i honestly don't understand how that value was computed. And I really would like to know 😦
hay looking for people to play with just got it
@deft swan you might want to move your request to #looking_for_game / #looking_for_unit
thanks sorry i am very new to pc let alone discord

Ngl the LDF have some awesome kit but I'm a tad bit confused on what those circular side pouches are
Drum?
@shell barn ah yes, the you is Here too
They're circular pouches of which I assumed they're for grenades like the IR ones, maybe
hello, i have a question. Why there aren't steam achivements for the dlc contact ?
They're circular pouches of which I assumed they're for grenades like the IR ones, maybe
@shell barn
In my experience they are used for snus
Snus?
@shell barn tabacco
Chewing tobacco in small tea like bags
Snus? Isn't that what we scandinavians call it? In english it's more often known as snuff, although... yeah, I think it's better to call it snus, in case someone tries to google it...
Well in Germany we say Snus
Aight
Would you guys recommend the contact DLC?
Yes
yes
The campaign was good fun when I played it and the map is quite nice (although I've experienced some sound bugs on it in the editor)
I'd recommend waiting for a sale to buy it though
I recommend it greatly
Awesome fun, great environment, awesome gear, cool attachments, and a lot more

Finally really exploring Livonia and taking notes for a campaign
I just now realized they have a hospital.
It can be blown up as well 😄
Thats the most important part of any hospital
Yea, I was kind of sad you couldn't blow up the Kavala one. Like I get the partnership with the Red Cross and all that. But Power Plants, Hospitals, churches all none-destroyable 😦
Speaking of Power plants, it is nice they have a nice empty area so you can at least make a fake power unit to blow up
I never realized how much stuff I missed, now that I actually really spent time on the map. Mapping all the various points of interest. Like 100% missed the actual vehicle range and the concrete targets.
theres a module in editor that clears any object on the map in a set radius , effectively clearing out any space you want. like you could get rid of all buildings in kavala if you want. btw kavala looks terrible without the castle
I am still wondering what does the Miller easter egg in ArmA 3 Contact DLC means lol
It's a meme really. He is sorta notorious in several campaigns of just being a spook.

Thats the most important part of any hospital
@mossy mauve If its non-destroyable hospital then its such a bad quality hospital.
I got a theory:
||CSAT’s East Wind Device messed with the Root System in the earth, and summoned the Aliens||
It makes since to me
And it allows it to meld with the cannon
what device?
||Eastwind Device||
If you don't know what that is, it's high time to play the Arma 3 Singleplayer campaign 😉
what device?
@mossy mauve That's an oof.
I got a theory:
@wispy maple Probably since the|| east wind device|| messed up already with the earthquakes so its probably effects the roots
I got a theory:
@wispy maple I do actually agree with this theory,And probably the Aliens came in to collect these roots before the ||device|| exposes them and the humans start messing up too
well
i have played it just a little bit
like first 1-2 mission
thing is i never knew how to play arma 2 campaign nor arma 3 campaign its just kind a slow for my pace
do i like really really need to play the full campaign?
if you like campaigns in general then yeah?
ig i will use some mods just to help me a lil bit
No one is forcing you to play the campaign. You can just look what that is up on the internet ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I'd say more but it would kinda spoil the story so yeah...
Anyway, that's where you can find information about the thing you were asking for. What you do now is up to you 🙂
ye i know
Hello... Do you guys recommend playing the Contact campaign?
Yes, definitely, it was a really great campaign imo
Thanks... I'm asking coz I loved the East Wind...
The gameplay style is a little bit different from what we're used to in Arma, but I really liked it (and from what I saw, most people that played it, loved it)
I know one person that hated it 😁 but from his complaints i gather that he was expecting more of a "run and gun" type of campaign with much more "pew pew" and less of running in the woods in the night and its air of mystery that I greatly enjoyed 🙂
I adore mysterious concepts, so i should like this... Thanks!
If that's the case, then you can definitely buy it 👍
Total playtime for First Contact is fairly short so don't expect a long campaign on the same level as TEW.
TEW actually is freaking long
I tell you what. The campaign honestly has the best epic moment compared to all the arma 3 campaigns. It might gotten spoiled by a lot of youtube, but having a nice headset up loud, and having it happen was a experience I won't forget. 😄
how do you get the alien craft to fly? can players fly it? if not that a massive waste of money (in my eyes)
Players can't as I know
You might make it fly through the editor somehow, not sure
You can remote in via zues and fly the smaller drone variants I believe
You can also get into the smaller alien rock thingies as a player
I tell you what. The campaign honestly has the best epic moment compared to all the arma 3 campaigns. It might gotten spoiled by a lot of youtube, but having a nice headset up loud, and having it happen was a experience I won't forget. 😄
@calm crescent To be honest Old Man gave me even more epic moments, and its replayablity is far greater than Contact's Campaign but still I would rate Contact as second over any other BI Campaign. It is clearly a step in the right direction and well worth the investment.
Hopefully we could get a CDLC with a campaign based on OLD MAN's open ended and sandbox nature rather than the done to death linear campaigns of old.
It would be pretty interesting to have open world campaign in contact's setting
playing as one of those looters for instance
It would be pretty interesting to have open world campaign in contact's setting
@weary terrace Yeah, too bad some of Contact's assets are not in A3 without loading it from the Launcher and so mission makers will probably never invest their time doing such mission because in the current scheme they would be limiting their player base greatly.
I have a question to which i have not found an answer anywhere - what were supposed to be thoose hot / cold steel balls found in the contact campaign to which those alien entities were supposed to be attracted to?
Were they steel? I thought it was just molten ground for some reason. Maybe it was measuring spectrum of it? Don't remember it much.
IMO doesn't matter if they were steel or whatever i would just like to know what were they supposed to be
try to observe what is happening with it in last campaign mission. You are observing it from quite far away but it should give you a clue
otherwise in free roam you might have some random encounter with it and could even try to get in combat with the visitors
||i saw the entity dropping them?||
or something like that - i don't remember quite well as i have played the campaign a long time ago but i was allways curious as to what thoose were
@sterile mesa maybe if you know you could tell me?
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1819779586 it should be quite obvious what is it after playing in that mission for a little bit 😉
if not, let me know and I can explain it further
I played with them a bit and made a small mission but out of curiosity did the vehicle attack behavior ever get added/changed? Forgive me if I missed it in the updates.
no idea
||there ammunition for the alien entirety||
is the contact DLC worth the money its worth
well the campaign is cool, the terrain is cool just like all other BI terrains
is the contact DLC worth the money its worth
Yes, otherwise it wouldnt be worth the money
is the contact DLC worth the money its worth
@wide creek It's one of my favorite A3 DLC's. I especially enjoyed the campaign and Livonia is one of my favorite Arma terrains ever.
Your right!
rip
The map and the new gear is cool as fuck, The ambiance of the missions at the start and overall spooky feel you get when playing is great. But the missions just get repetitive and i lost interest in the story i got so bored. but worth it still just for the first couple of missions
Forgetting the multiplayer
Hello
How to change that ? https://imgur.com/rqJRHSf
Because i have Contact DLC and map is changed and it's imposible to add point in game
the part of contact dlc that you have to manually activate isnt meant to be played with other missions because of how much is changed 👀 @woven kiln
Dont think so, I never had it active outside of playing the campaign tho
Is it worth it buying Contacts?
Depends. Content-wise it's a little lacking compared to Apex since the Livonian faction mostly reuses retextured stuff aside from their plate carriers, helmets and the Promet bullpup. The Rooskies also don't have much in the way of content since it's not a conventional faction but just special ops akin to CTRG/Viper in Apex.
The spin-off campaign is also something different from the usual Arma stuff but it may not appeal to everyone.
Basically, if you're not interested in the single player component, the Livonia terrain (which is quite small and performance heavy) or the few new extra guns, then it's probably not worth the purchase.
Well the campaign and map seems very intresting
the terrain is probably the best one they've ever made
While it looks really nice, personally I somehow don't get inspiration for any scenarios on it. Must be kinda burned out from Chernarus 🤷
Contact does not have the best story, nor is it the best DLC in my honest opinion, some of the missions were fun but some were not as quality, I defiantly prefer Apex, if your going to buy it, buy it when it's on sale because I do not think it is worth the 14 quid.
Though might be me, because alot of the DLCs I just find a bit ''eh'', but some such as Apex, I quite enjoyed (especially multiplayer on the apex map)
The map design is decent, the campaign is enjoyable but I amn't much of a stealth guy myself.
i have practically every dlc except for contact cause i thought it was a bit expensive so i just want to know if its actually worth the money
so should i buy it or no
a straight yes or no answer is good enough for me
Well...it's on sale right now with a 50% discount, so yes. May as well buy it now before the sale ends on 5th January.
Well, I liked it, so from me it's a "Yes", but it was more because of the mysterious story and the feeling of being alone in the woods at night most of the time.
Someone else will say that it's 💩 because there is no tank on tank combat, for example 😛
If what i described above sounds like something that you would like to play, then buy it 🤷♂️
@sinful tide id say its Worth buying contact, the map IS fairly decent, the Equipment you get is also pretty good, it also has pretty great campain Missions in Overall way its played
Felt like a very good expansion. Also the campaign was more exciting than the others, if you're a bit into hard sci-fi
The map is solid, would like to see the assets used more though. Nice additions to ARMA
How long does the contact campaign take?
Not very. If you ignore the optional objectives/freeroam exploration then the main storyline will take you approx 3-4 hours max.
Mostly depends on your gameplay style since there's a lot of emphasis on stealth.
For the first three missions anyway. The later missions are throwing dakka at the "bad guys".
Hmm I think I take at least 1h per mission
Do you fast forward through all the cutscenes? 😅
Don't think I will skip them, I've only ever really played arma on multilayer had a few DLCs but just got the rest of the DLC as it's on sale and might give it a try. 4 hours sounds OK
Didn't skip cutscenes and I can still blaze past them in less than an hour. As I said, it comes down to personal playstyle. Getting past the AI is simple enough if you know how they detect player movement.
The only missions that will take a minimum of one hour are Anomalous Phenomena and Carpe Noctem since you have to cover so much ground on foot.
Vehicles can only take you so far since they're bullet magnets...which is a death sentence in danger zones.
I finished almost every mission at dawn (besides the first one obviously) which means that I must have been taking that stealth way too seriously 😁
wtf is a pop life?
Yeah great dlc.Nice map,new gameplay mechanics and campaign.BI is getting better with each new campaign, the pacing, the voice acting, the music. My only issue is that we don't see all the new assets in the campaign. And this is present in all their campaigns. For the sake of logic and realism of course...i don't blame them. Can't wait to see their next big thing...will this be another dlc or ArmA 4.I'm looking forward to it!
What I understood Contact was very long in the making. Originally it was intended as the release ARMA 3?
No wonder if it's well baked.
No no no, it is even not. As far as I know the project was started in 2017
lol I just realized those are aircraft carriers.
Ooooh
Would u guys prefer Arma 3 Marsksman or helicopter?
In what sense, and why it would related to #contact_discussion ?
Because with both, you can engage contacts
It's by far the most intriguing
Much easier to relate to mankind encountering its first alien mystery than some hypothetical mediterranean island that feels like latin america but is a mix of variously (non)believable components
Not sure how Altis feels like latin america, but sure 😅
Because of the Type of Terrain, it reminds of the Myramar map in PUBG, which is Set in Latin America
I assume
Well, I'm from a semi-mediterranean country, and I can confirm that Altis looks 100% mediterranean. Honestly, it's perfect. Malden 2035 on the other hand, looks completely off judging by where it's supposed to be.
But as this channel is for the Contact DLC, let me get back on topic by saying that Livonia looks amazing. It just feels right, feels real
Watched a video of BI Dev Ivan talking about the development of Livonia for more than 40 minutes. And it amazes me how much work and research were put into it, and how many things were taken in consideration
Must be the military junta doing random stuff
I mean Altis it’s a practically 1:1 recreation of the island of Lemnos
Because engine limitation
Hey, short question: will people without the contact or any other DLC be able to play a mission with those included ?
depends what "included" means
mission on DLC exclusive terrain, no.
Mission that contains DLC assets, yes
Thanks deadmen, I was referring to the spetznatz units I'd like to use in a mission
I take it as a yes then
Keep in mind they can't pickup any DLC weapons ir gear from the ground if they don't own it
They can spawn with it or select them in the arsenal, but they'll get on-screen ads
Thx, as long as the players will be able to shoot them, it will be fine 😋
Weaponry in 2035 is District 9 level advanced, projecting national propaganda on your visual cortex based on your ID
just curious since ive not done much besides roam around campaign, does spectrum pistol have any use in a typical multiplayer server with nothing special setup for it?
Gotta question what's the best game type to play in multiplayer for pvp is it warlords
whatever you like, there's no "best"
Is invade and annex pvp?
no, and neither is it Contact
Oh okay thank you
What is the difference between Contact and Contact (Platform)?
Contact (Platform) is the free stuff that everyone gets, aswell as the dlc stuff that is avaible without having the optional bit loaded @next current
and Contact is the optional bit, with stuff like the campaign and bigger changes
Pi123263 - Thanks for the explanation

What Pi123263 described is because some changes/differences of Contact from vanilla were impossible to make via only scripting, such as ||the paper map in the First Contact campaign not having dynamic task markers||, making it incompatible with the base game
For this reason, when you load up the optional bit your only 'play' options are the campaign, the Editor, and Scenarios... with this last one having the warning that SP scenarios not created specifically for Contact may not be fully compatible
Chortles - Thanks for the further clairifcation
hello
So fun fact, ||The large AFO will actually deflect missiles if you shoot near the lower side of it|| 😄
Which is the performance/fps wise worst mission in the contact campaign?
beside open world mission I would say Outro2 aka Elimination Coda was quite bad due to higher than usuall view distance
The "open world" ones were the worst IIRC
Are you sure? I remember that the very first mission was "heavy", especially just before the events that end the mission and I don't have the same memories for the other ones.
But maybe I just got used to the performance afterwards? (but I doubt, tbh)
I mean around ||waiting for the airstrike||, if my memory serves me well
ah yeah well.. first mission intro sequence, 8fps
Okey first test, I found 26.7% of frametime that i can get rid of, up to theoretical max of 32%.
But if I can math right, thats only going from 8 to ~15 fps 😢
Thats still a good amount of fps
But if I pause the game, the max I get is 20fps, so the rest seems to be rendering limitation.
So I'd say, theoretical max I can do here is from 8 to maybe 17fps
But I have a shit computer too
If you have a better computer that now does 30fps, it would be up to 46 fps.
Start a Kickstarter and just write why a faster computer would help you improve Arma faster 😂
lol
he even shows my first idea INSIDE the mission
But todays not gonna be the day I play the contact campaign for the first time. Quick ALT+F4 :u
Intro by far was the worst for me.
It got better after updates byt i still drop frames
Haven't tried it since it came out, I may today 🤔
Try it. It's good
or you can wait till maybe next month or two to play it on performance branch with better fps 😄
is that a promise? 😉
Try it today. You'll be able to boast that you finished it earlier than Dedmen 🤷♂️

and then we ping and DM him what happens in contact and spoil everything
evil laughing
The one mission where you break into that old radar facility was the worse for me, performance wise
Then the final mission
And then the intro
I'll fix intro first and assume the others had the same issues
Awesome 🤟
looks like attachTo

mainly the setting position of the attached object.
There are some deeper inefficiencies that I don't think I can solve related to position updates in general.
But I can probably get rid of the attachTo updates as I think most objects are static
Didn't do anything besides first overall profiling.
So no idea what awaits me there tomorrow
Yeah, AttachTo destroys performance specially in MP
But First Contact is SP only
Wouldn't mind if we got a bit more porting over of some the assets to the platform. Would love all the "none-functional" electronics such as cars, and sights, as well as maybe the training ammo 😄
Well 17.5 fps is better than 10.
People asked for Performance DLC, and the thing we should ask is Dedmen DLC
Were the trees always purple?
I think the mission has some lighting
I'd say the color saturation on the screenshot is cranked up
probably is
arma 3 or squad im deciding which one to buy
- I'd recommend arma
- What does this have to do with the contact dlc
? @low oracle
Probably deciding on whether to buy the Contact Edition bundle.
ye
Dillon is my real name so I actually only play with the Dillon model now lol
How often does contact go on sale?
it's the only substantial dlc I don't have, keeping me from those sweet, sweet double barrel shotguns
About as often as everything else
I love contact because it's similar to my career in USAF. I was an Arabic linguist and did EW at my 2nd duty station
i still need to try it out, picked it up during the last sale
along with the Cold War add-on which I still havent touched either
Best gun in contact?
Promet.
Are there an other contact guns?
shotgun!
Oh wow I forgot.
I played with the contact shotgun on Sunday in our ESM PvP training.
It's terrible for PvP when others have rifles :D
True, but shotguns in arma can be awesome when done right
True, AI in CQB with shotguns are very deadly
AI also don't play with jittery hands on laggy 20 fps
Problem with shotguns is in reality they are petty against body armor
Great for street sweeping unarmored insurgents though.
Except insurgents are armed with AK rifles or Enfields. Shotgun is for blowing off the hinges, not much else.
but in reality they are much deadlier than portrayed in games, arent they?
https://youtu.be/q9Msztahe4Q?t=308 they are quite deadly in Arma too 😄

when done correctly shotguns can be extremely deadly in urban fighting in arma
Proceeds to bonk a guy with a shotgun over 60 metres
I've been playing a lot with one recently and I can get a one-hit-kill almost always
We actually kinda regularly have a pointman in the squad
i wasnt specifically talking about arma. but i kinda see a difference between the contact shotgun and modded shotgun, may be mistaken tho
I love how many of the impact sounds the shotgun pellets from the promet shotgun generate
when you shoot at the ground you just hear a bunch of simultaneous impact sounds
To be fair, that was before the new sub-munition process for shotguns, the old way was like a rail gun with BB's depending on the config 😛
Actually it does bring me up to a question, can you create chokes now with the sub-munitions and muzzle cfgs?
Is the contact dlc worth it
Yes @old valve
If you don't mind a bunch of the signature features/gameplay differences being singleplayer-only, then yes
Otherwise what it unlocks for regular use in scenarios isn't as much as Apex had... the aforementioned Promet rifle family, another Mk14 version, non-military double-barreled shotguns, short- and long-barreled counterparts to Apex's faux 'AK-12'... a ground drone, a Tractor, and the Livonia terrain
I thought it was a great single player experience. If you’re someone who prefers more multiplayer content then you’d definitely want to wait and pick it up when it’s on sale, because it is primarily a single player experience.
The Optional DLC component? Yeah that's exclusively SP
to be honest Contact is probably my most favorite vanilla arma 3 Campaign, really wished they expanded on the Aliens more though, would have been neat to have some Aliens on the ground to fight against in vanilla arma. but really enjoyed the story, and atmosphere. aswell as the electronic warfare was really cool, would be cool to see it implemented in MP with PvP or maybe even against AI i dont know. sometimes i feel like im really just scratching the surface to what i can do in multyplayer.
Some of what was done with the Spectrum Device in First Contact is available for modders via scripting: https://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma_3:_Spectrum_Device
The rest is only in the optionally loaded expansion data, relying on systems that cannot exist outside of Contact, I presume like that campaign's version of the fullscreen 2D Map
You can look on YouTube and the Workshop for examples of what people have been able to get done with Spectrum Device scripting despite that limitation.
god I want this dlc so bad
Then buy it
contact sucks
the map is ok'ish but its extremely poorly optimized
people cried for enterable buildings with interior for ages...
people got what they where asking for
people cry because the performance is not "great" because of what they asked for
That's a very one-sided opinion tbh ;P @scenic lantern
Are the trees enterable buildings too? Becouse perf in woods is also not so great.
ofc they are. elves need a home too 😄
Bi should just learn how to make an engine that doesnt suck fuck performance wise
Yeah, it's really sad that they had like 8 years and haven't had a single thought about working on an improved engine /s
The EV Engine actually scaled very well over the past 10+ years.
And Enfusion is already in (partly) development for a while now.
i can see half life 3 coming out before anything useful from the enfusion engine is made
why dont they just team up with BIS and use the VBS engine?
Or just release VBS4 to the public
Have you ever played VBS? I assume no
I dunno, why wouldn't Tesla team up with Audi and create a better car?
I played vbs1
Both suck
Okay, this discussion definitely isn't going anywhere. Bye
You can wait or build something yourself... Complaining won't...
if i knew what i was doing i would work with an engine that i know can actually handle arma's demands
which is literally anything considering how terrible the EV engine is
You don't know what you are doing. But you know exactly whats required to run a game like Arma, so well in fact that you know you can just take some other engine, and that RV is terrible for it.
ok?
No, its actually not as easy as you think.
what is VBS ? is it like a nonpublic arma version ?
VBS is an actual military-simulator-cousin-for-actual-militaries of Arma (not really) made by also a cousin but not really related company Bohemia Interactive Simulations
ah not publicly for sale i assume ? or just expensive ?
Both
ah :/ dam i guess maybe some functions will swap over into arma 4 ^^ whenever that happens
but in theory could i buy it as a privat person ? ^_^
You'll end it by getting Arma 3 instead! 😄
sooo if i make a country annnnd a army for said country ? 😛
Mayhaps 😉 Let's go to #other_games_chat if you're willing to continue
VBS is not fun anyway from what ive heard
nope, different companies, different dev teams, different engines etc
Is the Polish dialogue the LDF uses written down anywhere,
closest I can figure out is "cięty" for ready
What and when exactly do you mean?
They clearly say "gotów" when you select "Polish 01" in Virtual Arsenal 🤷♂️
He means the lines transcribed
Are Contact .pbo's still encrypted? (I want to rip off part of radio pack texture for my air support script)
Yes still encrypted, and no, even when not encrypted it's still not allowed to "rip" stuff 🤦♂️
So u saying that I can't use one part of the game in another part of this very game?
You can use the texture by linking to it (so use the texture directly from it's original location), not by Copy&Pasta
See #ip_rights_violations and #other_ip_topics to learn more about it
anyone got tips for performance in contact? runs like a powerpoint presentation for me lol
i mean like at some points 10-17fps
There's no “works only in Contact” solution, only “works only in Arma 3 generally” and which doesn't really exist (don't expect any super FPS boost)
yeah fair enough, dont get me wrong I love arma, but the engine does need to be optimised a bit. Excited for the new engine supposedly being used for arma 4
Enfusion that will be used in Arma 4 or whatever its called, the new™️ game will have a better CPU and GPU usage, I believe. However, since we don't have it we can't expect any big boost. Had to agree RV4 needs a bit of optimization to use our hardwares
I know it's getting a bit off topic, but honestly if arma 4 was just arma 3 but with better optimisation, bit more diverse maps (not just islands, maps with rivers, lakes, etc.) and more in depth medical system like ace that could be toggled on or off for people that don't like it (or have it changed to be more streamlined so it doesn't get in the way of peoples fun sometimes) I would be happy.
Obviously updated graphics as well, eye candy is always nice
If you want some hardware-specific suggestions regarding Arma 3, check #hardware_vs_arma... for settings: https://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma_3:_Performance_Optimisation
thanks!
had contact loaded while edited a mission I have made. Now when trying to start the mission it claims I need contact to run.
I didn't added any contact content, what I'm aware of. Why is Contact making itself as dependency without any content added.
And how do I remove it. Tried the to clear the list addons {}; and addonsMetaData {}; To forceupdate it. Still requier Contact... something about userinterface. Any help to fix this is appriciated don't wanna have 50+ hrs in the drain.
the enfusion engine (according to a 'leaker') is in very early stages, and can't run tracked or fixed-wing vehicles. it's not likely arma 4 is going to come out anytime soon, though the 'leaker' did give some photographs of something called reforger
rying to play the mission on my dedicated ends with Warning Message: You cannot play/edit this mission; it is dependent on downloadable content that has been deleted.A3_UI_F_Contact
don't the dedicated server structure provide support for all the DLC?
Did the purported leak claim tracked and fixed-wing specifically? I ask this because I don't recall seeing any DayZ tracked vehicles (mods included) but I've definitely seen modders do both fixed-wing and rotary wing... although I don't know whether that's because (as others have claimed) DayZ is only using the animations and rendering parts of Enfusion (plus the Enforce Scripting aka EnScript language and the rest is still Real Virtuality
I definitely have a 'good grief' feeling about Enfusion being in very early stages despite being basically-announced back in 2014...
well, since bh had over 100 employees leave for thq nordic (who are apparently making a mil-sim game, perhaps as a competitor to arma), i’m not very surprised that it could be in early stages. also, announcements ≠ in development from past experiences
although, yeah, i’m very worried if enfusion actually is in early alpha
also, i didnt specify so this is definitely my bad, but it’s more of an experimental version of a revised enfusion engine, according to the leaker. arma: reforger or operation flashpoint: reforger or whatever bh is making, will apparently be built on this new/revised engine
Replied in #general_chat_arma
Oh well then if it's a particular iteration that can't do fixed-wing or tracked then 🤷
Often times I’ll create a new empty mission with the proper load order, then merge it with the first mission you created
otherwise you can remove the contact requirement through the missions description file
But that’s a little more in depth
is this dlc worth it for a newbie]
As far as I know the campaign presumes working knowledge of the basic infantry mechanics already and so the first missions are instead about teaching those mechanics specific to the Contact DLC/its SP campaign -- ones which aren't supported in unmodded 'sandbox' gameplay outside of the campaign
On the other hand, the DLC does unlock the guns (Promet bullpup rifle series, AKU-12 carbine, RPK-12 machine gun, Kozlice 12 gauge double-barreled shotgun [full-length and sawn-off]), the ED-1 series ground drone, the tractor, and the Livonia terrain for unmodded 'sandbox' gameplay
"You can't use the alien assets in the editor for missions either." - is that correct?
afaik you cant without the optional part loaded
Correct
Ohh you can use the optional stuff?
The aliens are part of the optional stuff... but so is how the Map item works, the Spectrum Device functionality, and so on
That is good news
but afaik none of it is MP-compatible, hence it being siloed off via the 'platform versus optional stuff' divide
Ye not mp capable afaik
That would explain it then... Bohemia Interactive hasn't pushed 'gameplay overhaul features' changes to the sandbox for over three years now
It seems we're experimenting with mp/spectrum
Still very limited and requires scripting... IF it can be made to work
@wide meteor as in, somebody in the unit of mine. They had some good early stab at it
Ooooh... I do know that there's been experiments with it in the sandbox, and official documentation: https://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Arma_3:_Spectrum_Device
And one or two releases on the Workshop for the Spectrum Device
I know the spectrum device has a mod for it for MP on platform. It's not as UI interactive though for peformance reasons.
Threat on the chemical detector has a few scripts rolling around.
I'm working on something for the ED-1 bot.
Only thing I really wished BI would release is all the "EMP'd" vehicles and assets from contact to platform. Think they would be great to use for the few empy scripts around even if they are all just scope 1'd.
Aren't they all cosmetic even in First Contact?
Sorta. Things like the ACO just have the reticle removed from the model but they function as usual. Flashlights and IR pointers won't activate though, and laser designators/rangefinders along with the MAAWS and NVGs are pretty much useless since their optics are disabled.
Zamaks and Offroads are partially affected too with some gauges on their dashboard being disabled.
The tractor is the only functional vehicle in Contact after being hit by the alien not-an-EMP
All the other functional ones had to come from outside the affected area
It's curious tho, cause there's a looter camp you can find with multiple disabled vehicles that got there somehow after the aliens showed up. The only functional one being the tractor
I guess the tractor only runs on gas no electronics and stuff, the shockwave must have been a mix of electromagnetic fields like a emp but with a gravitational field stronger than earth's
And I guess it only affects the things it touched
And that have certain materials
It's a thing of elctric vs. 'electronic' Imo. Tractor is old enough to have a mechanical fuel pump, if you get it running, it runs. all other vehicles would have an electronically controlled pump which would just get fried. If there's any electronics in the tractor, it wouldnt be needed to hook up a battery and crank the starter motor, which should be robust enough to survive an emp blast.
Hey I don’t have the dlc but I was wondering if there was any way to get the spectrum device to work in other missions
Like if I have to set the stuff up in the editor or if will work with tfar or something
Yes but suspect there's no existed products
What do you mean products?
Mods or scripts or whatever. At least I don't know any
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2224534021 Spectrum device with module placements.
It has some limits though so expect a bit more work then just drop in play.
Cool thanks
Does anyone know how to get the small alien drone to use the movement module? I've been using the bin_fnc_setObjectGrid function and it worked fine in Livonia, but doesn't seem to work on malden
[bin_drone1, (getpos bin_drone1) vectorAdd [0,0,4],4,2,4,4,2,3] call bin_fnc_setObjectGrid;
this is the full grid script btw
oh, nvm. Edited the numbers to their default values and that seemed to work
Have you checked the biki doc.?
There is a tutorial in the Arma 3 Editing category iirc
@wide pathI hear it's quite limited and needs scripting in any case
Has anybody tried the Alien drone behavior in a MP setting?
well there is generated blank terrain beyond the proper playable area
It just keeps going
Contact does not involve fighting Aliens right? It is still human fighting human...
Best way to find out is to play the campaign man!
No human vs alien conventional warfare on the campaign
hey that depends on how you define warfare 👀
Well he is obviously referring to Conventional Warfare, in its full connotation.
All I can say is chuck a grenade at said strange thing and see what happens 😄
does anyone know where the classical music from contact is saved?
I did found the mp3s of the ingame music ( but not of the classical ones)
No, they're EBO'd so can't find. They are real musics so you can listen to them
You could always Shazam it
Do you mean 🎵

I don't think there are 'clean' versions included, just the ones used for the Spectrum Device.
thank you for these!
my Shazam claims I am offline although I am not :>
Would you have a please list of all the songs - got recognised Smetana‘s the Moldau , Tchaikovsky Souvenir de Florence Allegreto Moderato
But not the remaining ones
Let's try to ask @mint stirrup as I may get it wrong myself 🎼
Hiya! 😎 The only one I'm missing in the list above is Felix Mendelssohn's Hebrides Overture.
Here's the list with some YouTube links for your enjoyment:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlNxdUkdJpM&t=3s - Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, 'Souvenir de Florence'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zcogD-hHEYs - Felix Mendelssohn, 'Hebrides Overture' (aka, 'Fingal's Cave')
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3G4NKzmfC-Q - Bedřich Smetana, 'The Vltava / Moldau', from Má Vlast
Another one that didn't quite make the cut, but we considered:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcdoulhQDAI - Ludwig Beethoven, 'Symphony No.7 in A Major (2nd Movement)' (tough call between this and Mendelssohn for the 'first contact' scene!
And for the record, I'm a Beethoven man - through and through 😋 Can't beat the immortal 9th!
thanks a million to both of you for your help !
Actually the Beethoven piece would have been indeed fitting well - it was used in e.g. in the film Knowing. Some piece from Tchaikovskys Swan Lake could had been a good fit as well. Another great addition could had been Bach - Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F major BWV 1047 - 1. Allegro - the version in the YouTube link here conducted by Karl Richter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z-l5sF8Vp8 was used as the first song on the Golden LP on the Voyager spacecraft sent into the galaxy https://voyager.jpl.nasa.gov/golden-record/whats-on-the-record/music/ - would had been fun/ nice Easter Egg if the Aliens would sent that song back as a response or so 😉 - the song was also used in an X-Files episode https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pvZ0EhbUcug - thats for music and space so far 😉
Does the livonia map (available after purchase of contact dlc) has same night ambience (music, bird noises, fog etc.) as found in the "First Contact "campaign ?
the normal ambient noises like birds/enviroment sounds etc are part of the map, yes
fog and weather etc can be adjusted by mission creators
music can be played but doesnt play by default as part of the ambience
I've heard that the contact DLC also messes with the lighting to obtain nights better suited for the expected gameplay (not fully sure how accurate that statement is, so don't quote me on that).
If that is true, then it won't be possible to fully recreate the exact look
@misty charm thanks for the information.
Yes, the 'Hollywood night' in the Contact campaign is only available when the Total Conversion optional data is loaded. It's quite specific to the hours used in the campaign and does not even have proper transitions to all times of day.
The vanilla version of the terrain has more standard lighting configurations as on other terrains.
There is a few mods on the Workshop that attempts to re-create the lighting for none-contact DLC. It's not a 1 to 1 but pretty close.
@calm crescent if possible could u plz name some of those?
https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=1862157876
Replaces I think most the vanilla maps
@calm crescent thanks for your help
Is there some wiki or guide on how to play the contact DLC?
I just started it, its the first mission, i got to the UGV, disabled it, and i am supposed to go to "TOC" which isn't even on my "map" unless i am really blind (which could be).
Where should i go?
Or am i supposed to wait where i am for some pickup?
If i try to go somewhere, it tells me after a while "i am not sure this is the right direction".
Never mind, i found some dead guy in the woods and took his map, which helps - i was actually near TOC, i just could see it because of all the fog, and thought i was supposed to relocate somewhere else.
(btw. i thought its just training exercise, why is there a dead guy? accidents happen, but this is weird)
||In the first mission you should have a special hand-drawn exercise map from the start. And after the UGV, any 'dead' hostiles should have stopped their roleplaying. Any chance you're mixing Contact with other mods?||
Hello! long time no see 🙂
...i think the main problem was that i got a bit unlucky with the weather. The fog was so thick i couldn't see more than few meters, so while standing at the gate, i couldn't see far enough into the factory to notice all the soldiers and assets.
I probably didn't pay enough attention when the game was telling me where to go and the hand drawn map doesn't have the "TOC" marked on it.
So, i assumed i am to go somewhere else, so i went back the way i came from, and that is where i found the dead bodies - and they weren't just "playing" dead, they were DEAD, i could loot their stuff.
No other mods except other official DLCs.
(namely: Helicopters, Karts, Malden, Maps, Marksmen, Tactical Guide, Zeus, Apex, DLC Bundle 2, Jets, Laws of War, Tac-Ops Mission Pack, Tanks, Contact).
Hi back! Peculiar, they were very effective at roleplaying then! 😅
Yep, looks like they were taking the training very seriously, as they should.
Got a question about the spectrum device from contact, as I understand it all the functionality it has in the campaign is scripted and basically unavailable in multiplayer. Is there any information anywhere about its functionality under the hood, so to speak, so that someone could make it do something new in a mission via scripting
Things can be done with it but no idea if there is much usable documentation anywhere
would you happen to know then if it has a firing event you can hook into with a script?
like if I wanted an NPC to "fire" it and have some effect happen
Personally I don't have that level of detail
smh I can't use the spectrum device to do the electronic deception
I point it at the two guards, nothing
I point it at the red thing on my compass
Nothing
Sometimes I get a few blips on the LDF frequency but they always go away after a few seconds even if I'm holding my mouse completely still
okay it works now it was glitched, I had to reload from my last save and it worked
pulsing the glowing orb does not work
i do it from as close as possible and nothing happens after I finish pulsing it
well crap I wasn't supposed to pulse it
i'm just stupid
question regarding the campaign, is there any command to hack the UGV? For some reason it's impossible to do that as game tells me, I've spent over an hour doing that and I can jam it, but I ave no hacking action.
i already forgot most about Contact, but i think the hacking action is available when you get within a touch range of the vehicle - not using your Spectrum device, but as a user "action" kind of like when accessing inventory etc. (but i'd guess you already knew that)
I don't know if the side from which you approach the UGV matters, but in my play-through i did it from behind.
And if you already tried it this way, then i'd think you found a bug.
I tried from all sides and no interaction. Also it didn't really want to be suppressed by the spectrum noise, color changed to orange but it still tried to aim at me or drive away.
You may need to keep suppressing it as you are getting close to it - not all the time, but once it gets "suppressed", which you can tell by it aiming its turret up to the sky (or to the ground - i don't recall which it was), then you can move to it, but if you take too long (no idea what that means - seconds? minute? don't remember), it will shake off the suppressed state, so you need to use the Spectrum thingie again to suppress it again.
IMO you cannot go wrong if you keep using the Spectrum thingie even as you walk towards it, making sure you keeping it suppressed, and once you get close you just stop firing and aiming with the thingie gun, to put the thingie gun aside so you can see the action pop up - if it doesn't popup, maybe try fiddling with scroll wheel on your mouse to bring the action menu to life (not saying i needed to do that in that situation, but i had it in game many times, that under some circumstances the actions do not show right away and you need to "wake it up").
.
If it is still trying to aim at you or driving away, then that would indicate it is NOT suppressed.
Keep flooding it with the signal until you see the turret goes limp and turns stright to the ground or sky (again, don't remember which was it) - then it should be really suppressed.
I've been suppressing it before the dialogue about suppressing and hacking of it started, so I maybe broke one of the triggers. I'll try to do that when closer, but from comments I've seen since premiere of the DLC, I might have to restart the whole part.
It didn't point its gun anywhere, only light around it has been changing from blue to orange, it was able to move the gun anyway, and as soon as I stopped, it tried to drive away towards the infantry near it
What do you mean by "light around it"?
btw. is it possible the presence of enemy targets are making it difficult or impossible to suppress it?
I don't see why that would be the case, but who the hell knows, maybe try to wait until the UGV destroys all targets it can find and eventually stops somewhere.
In my case, after it finished the infantry near the helicopter crash site, it drove towards a nearby village where i previously disabled some automated gun - since i killed everyone and everything nearby, it had no more targets and just stopped there.
Then i approached it while keeping it suppressed, and successfully disabled it.
sorry, I meant that when the drone or that turret before were active, there was a blue light, and when hit with the device, the light turned orange
Game suggested that I should hack the drone so I can use it to eliminate that infantry next to it, I don't think this is a case
yeah, I simply sent the infantry away by hacking their frequency, approached the turret while holding LMP with noise, got next to it and destroyed with a hold action
but the hold action was not present near th UGV sadly
Aha, i think i misunderstood your situation.
I thought you did actually hack the UGV to make it attack the infantry, and now are struggling with the second hack to disable it.
So, the way i remember it:
1.) You hack the UGV to go berserk
I am not sure if this was done by flooding it with noise and then physically interacting with it, or if it required to use some "program" or special kind of signal that you can select in the Spectrum device interface.
I have it all mixed up in my head at this point, so you shouldn't take anything i write word for word, but i think it was through use of some special program/signal while also using the correct antenna (switched by pressing 'R') - but i could be wrong.
2.) You hack it again to disable it
After you unleashed a killing robot on the world in step #1, as a responsible citizen, you want to disable it after it murdered all those people for you.
This (i think) was done by flooding it with noise until the turret goes limp as i described in previous post, and then physically interacting with it (seems like that is what you did).
that actually makes sense, maybe I misread one of dialogues (and it's possible because I already skipped few accidentaly when I paused my game)
I'll try your suggestion after I get back from work and tell whether it worked
Depends on your preferences. I think it has a very cool atmospheric SP campaign with lots of nice ideas. Not 'open world' like Old Man but not linear.
The map is very nice.
Thanks for the input.
I really liked the east wind, so, in your opinion, would I like this?
Yes I think so, but it's not as long as East Wind
Mhm.
Still lots of scouting and roaming around
so you were right, I just had to use the "hack" to make it go berserk, so I just misread/misheard something, thank you so much for you help!
Definitely- great athmosphere
i'd say the map is worth it, for sure.
But the SP campaign... i found it silly and rather boring as a direct consequence of that, but the same things that bothered me may not bother you.
I'd say get it just because of the map, and if you happen to like the campaign, that will be a bonus.
I had good times in campaign, I adore science fiction and such addon to the paranormal activities was cool, along with few mechanics
hmm I think I missed the convo about that and I can't really find it - why Contact is one and only DLC that is still EBO'ed?
Still quite freshly released I would have assumes
Contact is unique in that they have two sets of content for it.
They have the platform stuff which is things everybody has accessable to.
Then they have the campaign related stuff that really wouldn't fit well with the platform. Which will probably stay as a EBO
The biggest reason I'm aware of is simply the stuff EBO'd modifies the main game very heavily. It overrides entire UI's and such. Which wouldn't work well as a platform thing.
For Contact's stuff I can understand, but it's a shame that the platform content (Enoch) hasn't been depbo'd yet.
We do have it on our backlog to convert the rest of Enoch from EBO to PBO. No timeline confirmation, but probably after the 2.06 update.
yeah and I'm mostly concerned about the campaign ebos, I was really eager to see how did they make certain parts of dialogues and tasks, but it's impossible unfortunately 😦
Oh nice thank you, I know stuff like the EMP'd equipment and vehicles doesn't seem like much. But I really look forward to using those.
Some things are better left unseen 😅 Nah, there's certainly some cool techniques in there, but I'd also consider a lot of it not suitable for the regular sandbox due to the amount of extraterrestrial trickery involved 😉
there was a short discussion about this just a few posts back.
