Unit: India 3/5

On 12 May 1967 at 0730 hours, Delta 1/5, opconned to 3/5, stepped off on point through the north east side of the Que Son Valley. In trail was I/3/5, L/3/5, and M/3/5, as the battalion swept looking for the 2nd NVA Division. Evidence had been spotted with tons of bunkers and caves being found in early May by 3/5 but no major fighting.

Just west of Checkpoint 2 Delta was ambushed on point and cut off in an open paddy. I/3/5 was ordered to secure the southern flank of D/1/5 and ran into a similar situation of an in-depth bunker system that quickly pinned down the companies of 3/5. I/3/5 pulled back 200 meters and fought off a determined NVA counterattack while all contact was lost with Delta by night fall.

All available air support in I Corps was directed to 3/5 in the Que Son Valley on this day as the battalion found itself fighting a dug in NVA Regiment.

You sometimes can’t tell what’s going on with someone until it’s too late… That’s what happened to me on September 25th, 26th and the 30th of 2021… 2:43 AM, 4:41 AM, and 7:12 PM. I didn’t see the signs until it was too late.

So take this time and all the other chances you have to ask your loved ones, friends, or even a passer by at the coffee shop you see everyday and say:

“Is there anything I can do to help?”
”Is there something on your mind?”

Dates 2300 13 May -1500 17 May 1967

At 2300 hours on 13 May India ad Kilo 3/5 would be probed heavily by a superior NVA force of four companies. The NVA assaulted five times during the night, at the top of each hour. On the third assault Lt. Kenny Moore stated that India had so little ammo Marines were using weapons off of the NVA close to their perimeter.

In the night fight that took place India and Kilo counted over 250 bodies in front of their positions, but most believe they killed twice that right and do not agree with the kill count posted for the operation.

From 14 May to 17 May India Company and other line companies patrolled to count bodies, search for two missing Delta 1/5 Marines. Lance Corporal Jose Agosto-Santos and Sergeant Charles Ashlock, who is still listed as MIA. Agosto-Santos would return to Marine lines in January 1968 as a propaganda move by the NVA after he was cared for by them for seven months.

In the last days of Operation Union the Marines of 3/5 would discover evidence of large bunker complexes and field hospitals pointing to how prepared the 2nd NVA Division was in the Que Son Valley and how the intel section of the 1st Marine Division was lacking. The operation concluded on 17 May with 1/5 setting up a command post on an unmarked hill that would become known as Hill 51.

1st Marine Division records place the body count at over 900, but most 5th Marine veterans dispute that number and place it above 1300. 5th Marines casualties were 110 KIA, 2 MIA, 473 seriously WIA, while I/3/5 suffered two KIA, and only about 25 WIA.
