What makes you think that? Find servers through the launcher, then it can subscribe, download and start the game with those mods. When you are inside the game you can't change mods or enable (c)DLC if you bought but not enabled them. So you will mostlikely get kicked from joining a server that needs mods/DLCs.

Only DLCs with terrains are required to join a server that plays on that terrain. If the server has a scenario that included DLC gear and vehicles (but on basegame or free DLC terrains: Altis, Stratis, Malden) then you can still join it, but not really use the gear effectively (because of ads to buy the DLC) or only be a passenger in DLC vehicles. You'll have to resort to gear and vehicles from the basegame or DLCs that you bought.

I was thinking of starting a community/unit whose purpose is to "play enemy" for other community/units scenarios. The idea being we provide a bunch of dudes who play according the parameters you set to test how their unit performs against RL players with us providing feedback at the end.

Do you think there would be interest/demand for this?

I'm really not sure when development ended on the engine for arma, but it's normal that it doesn't support multi-threading. Pretty common with a lot of old games as well.

The problem I see in my country's community is that there is probably just one PvP group. The rest are purely PvE milsim machos and when we tried to persuade them to join us for some PvP, they told us to **** off, that PvP is shit.

Based on my experience, this would not work at all, as people prefer to play against AI. The main reason is that in Arma, using tactics etc isn't effective in PvP. I understand them, not everyone is into PvP.

I do wish you luck, but based on my limited experience with Czech communities, it wouldn't work.

More to the question, arma isn't really built for PvP. It's a game that demands your time and attention so spending 2 hours walking just to die to some squad that was laying around the whole match not only affects the general atmosphere that the GM goes for, it infuriates players that otherwise have a job and a life. The feeling of wasted time is why nobody will play PvP within a built mission

And not only ofcra. FNF, AFI, TBD, ATC and number of Russian events do exactly that. Longer PvP missions with preparated mission. One of the Russian projects I take part in does exactly this. Two two-hour long missions, usually around 150-170 player. One life. You die in the first 15 minutes, shit happened, you go do something else.

I understand most people don't have the patience for this. But me and many others enjoy this a lot.

FNF does three one hour long ops, ofcra does one one and half hour long op. And people do show up for it, as they enjoy it.

It always is a community project, that combines many different communities that play together in bigger numbers

As I said, Czechs don't like PvP at all. Russians are the exact opposite. They have number of events running simultaneously each having around 150 players.

In my years of being in PvP circles, I can with rather high confidence say, that Russians are the biggest. And probably oldest in the PvP area. It just doesn't reach out of there, as they have enough players to keep il everything in Russian without the need of foreign squads, like ofcra, FNF, TBD (a try to bring russian like event to English speaking communities) needs.

Iirc Swedes have few PvP communities. Fins have AFI which holds regular PvP events. Polish people have number of groups that do both PvE and PvP. The community is our there, it's just way smaller then the PvE one.

If you enjoy it it is worth it. It is personal. I am not aware of the contents of said pack, but the mods are divided (at least in the launcher) in optinal and "core" DLCs. Optional DLCs change the "flavour" of the game ie vietnam, cold war, aliens. While the core dlcs add content on top of the game. I def reccomend buying these core dlcs, as many servers use them and you would be missing content from these servers. I would buy the optional ones later depending on personal taste.

So in short, if you think Arma 3 is worth your money, I would buy the core dlcs, which are included in the apex edition iirc

I mean, dont get me wrong, hackers on the official servers arent good, but I doubt its a significant factor to anyone returning the game.

Im not sure if theres any hard data out there, but I would guess that the breakdown for new players is something like 50% saw a funny clips video, 30% saw a milsim group video, 20% got pressured asked to join in a friend's group to fill ranks.

Its a map/terrain from apex dlc. You cant play on dlc terrains unless you own them.

Equipment/weapon wise, you can use them if you get them from arsenal, but annoying pop up ads will show up, telling you to buy dlc.

Same for vehicles, if you dont own the dlc vehicle you can only enter as passanger.

More specifically, the Jets DLC adds three air-to-air focused jets (the base game's jets are air-to-ground focused) and a stealth bomber UCAV, while Helicopters DLC adds two heavy-lift helicopters that can sling-load heavier vehicles than any base game helicopter (albeit one of those two has a bunch of variants that don't do sling-loading).

Trying to get some campaign achievements, one of the ones I am trying to get is the “Humanitarian” achievement. I got all the other correct decisions but I failed the supply drop one where one of them got damaged. Do I need to replay the entire campaign or just restart that mission?

Okay so!

Arma 3 bucks many conventions of gameplay that you may be used to.

It is a sandbox; there are scenarios, both official and community-created, and how they handle pilot roles can be dramatically different. Some scenarios have you flying from the get-go, some will allow you to capture helicopters - assuming you can fight off the enemy and beat your fellow players to the pilot seat. More formal Milsim groups will usually have role selection in the leadup to game time, where pilot roles are available but selective; the groups I'm in use a lottery system. Plus a healthy amount of 'if they trust you to not crash it immediately' 😛

There are some gamemodes, KOTH comes to mind, which have their own in-mission currency system where you can buy vehicles, including helicopters. This currency is tied only to that specific server, with (hopefully, it'd be against user terms otherwise) no way to buy it with real monies.

Malden is an entire new island to play on. Like Altis and Stratis from the base game. I don't understand why you get so worked up about getting a free bonus thing. Zeus DLC is also a bonus. Getting a refund is not warranted.

(KP) Liberation is like being the invader faction in a capture the island gamemode. You have to get a foothold on the terrain and expand from there, taking resources to fund your invasion.

Proving Grounds was actually a test/concept map for very, very early Arma 2: Futura DLC (which we know it with the name Arma 3 nowadays) and A2PMC team brought it since the idea was scrapped. So nothing's fancy is expected there, but anyways, Moricky made it very cool whatsoever

I think Operation Arrowhead kinda flew too close to the sun.

COD at least presents itself as Real World™️, but still kept away from any hard details. Arma has always tried to establish it's world space, so it couldnt be brushed off as !Taliban in !MiddleeasternCountry anymore, but as the Takistani military going rogue, or their Militia spinoff, which have a written history and character and reason for their conflict.

No it is just that many of my games I have played as an American, even though, without getting into too much detail, it is not my favourite faction. I think the game content just reflects the community, but at the same time it is interesting to analyse how our beliefs affects even the faction we choose in a videogame. For example Mike Force, at least in the servers I played, FNLs are just NPCs. I am not sure where I want to get to, I just wandered off a bit, but at the end I probably just miss a community that doesnt always play NATO.

Yes that is what I mean. In a game like Arma, lets take mike force as an example. Why not let people play as FLN? Maybe you can, but on the populated servers I played you could not. I am not saying that you should force people to play both sides, but giving an option would be nice. Arma does this to an extent, but you see a strong American bias and I think that is because well, most people are from the US or NATO countries

I can see that, but at the same time we had operation arrowhead back in 2009. We could argue with that same argument that any game where you take part in wars is wrong because every war causes suffering. It is a touchy subject, and I understand that the wound hasnt healed yet, but I dont see a fundamental ethical difference except for the fact of how much people get offended by it. That for me is reason enough to not make that content, because I dont want to offend people to get views/attention. But it still boils down to public reception in the end, the way I see it. If there was a real war USA vs RUS, a game where you play a US soldier killing Russians might not be well received in Russia and vice versa. So if public reception is bad ie reminds of the fallen in the conflict, i think the right thing to do is to respect the grief. In short, I dont really know what to think and im just debating to hear other peoples opinion and after that forming my own

And even more strikingly there is a difference between selling popcorn and making a mistake during the portrayal so you have a shallow, reductive husk of the original conflict.

That is why most devs create conflicts rather than portray them, it's too difficult to fairly portray the circumstances, emotions, stories, and personality while preserving what makes a video game a video game.

If you browse multiplayer via the server browser that's built into the game launcher, it'll handle mod downloading/selection for you... due to ahem engine limitations the in-game one does not, and with that one you'd only be able to connect to servers whose combination of mods matches whatever you had loaded when you started the game client

I mean this goes back to the moral question of whether video games should even depict real world violence to begin with whether it’s 20 years ago (fallujah) or 150 years ago (civil war games). In the end, real world conflict is compartmentalized into a piece of entertainment medium for peoples achievement. Now, I personally use Arma as a simulation tool for conflict, not really an arcade shoot em up or Squad, so I enjoy mods that have up to date depictions of factions e.g ISIL, IRG, USAF for the purposes of accuracy
