It is a very tricky thing to discuss. As AI is more and more involved with being a search engine. The scenario they are referring to sounds like it is specific to the AI model/Prompt being told not to do such. Which is technically not uncommon and if it is an issue then all other AI companies should be getting the same kind of feedback (Which I believe they do, but for the sake of safety they won't change their stance).

And to be honest, the only reason we are aware of "censorship" now is because the model is telling us it won't do it. There are many ways existing google searches "censor" by manipulating what results come up first, etc.

So imo this is nothing new. But in this circumstance, the AI model is providing the data, where as Google Search was just pointing you to the place that had the data.

The default chooses the "best" model for you based on the complexity of the query. (most of the times sonar)

If left to default, Perplexity has the financial incentive to choose the cheapest one. I don't trust the "best" model chosen due to the conflict of interest

Sonar provides the fastest results, good for simple questions

Thats often how it goes since the model is smaller, you don't need reasoning models for a query lik "What is the weather?" I'd just stick to the reasoning models for advanced things like 2.5 pro, sonnet 4

gemini pro 2.5 explains things very well for me. This is what I like about it. Other LLMs may give same answer but the quality of explanation matters too. No point having the right answer which I can't understand.

but yes, I find Gemini 2.5 Pro and Perplexity's RAG is a powerful combo

it actually performs better than Google's own platform imo in many ways

but sometimes, RAG makes things worse because web sources aren't as intelligent as AI
