pretty sure they already tried forcing R1 to reason more. even now, R1 often seems to waste thinking tokens in overthinking. saw several minutes spent for something trivial like "random number 1-10". and more thinking doesnt mean better results. they may lost good result because it starting to think about something more niche. also that costs more, requires more context (enough reserve for response) and is slower

Only indirectly - otherwise the reasoning time is baked into the model (so low, medium, and high models are different - it's not like a dynamic setting at query time). Prompting can indirectly affect the amount of reasoning though (terms like 'think twice', 'think carefully', 'wait and consider...' before responding) have been shown to improve benchmark scores when added to a prompt.
