Yep, that is mostly because perplexity is not live scraping the results.
Instead they have self indexed a lot of stuff.
does you.com live scrape?
Generally if the sources response is very fast, it's likely not live scraping.
sure makes sense
If you've seen the speed of ChatGPT Plus, or Bing for search, you will know how fast it normally is.
Then again, those ones can also click links etc, to navigate around.
yeah i mean the bing search has been pretty disappointing with chat GPT lol
Yep, its advantage is that it can look deeper into a site.
Perplex and similar services can generally only look one layer deep.
yeah for sure, i am liking phind pro for like no code programming, but it does a pretty good job with general searching
but i have not used you pro , i just joined their discord lol
Yep, technically you can make searching through a site a lot faster, by crawling a few layers deep into the site when indexing, but not sure if they actually use that method. Since you probably need a lightweight model to choose what links to click on in the page. If needed.
My app said co pilot before; now it says pro. Is this good or bad? Haha sorry if this is a repeat.
they renamed it because of all the other stuff rebranding to copilot from microsoft etc
Does anyone knows if the pro version with claude 3 have the same power as the actual claude 3 oops have?
Like when it comes to token and how many words does claude 3 can process for a conversation and how it te reads the conversation.
I haber the subscription for claude 3 as well as gpt4 and since perplexity have both with their pro subscription I wanted to ask about that. Handling a lot of words and staying relevant over long conversations or long words is one of the most important things to me. Anyone have any I in regards to that?
Pretty sure it's the same context, as on their api website, I don't see models with a smaller context.
Opus, Sonnet, Haiku
Anybody wants to ask me anything? I have access to gpt4, claude 3 opus, gemini 1.5 pro, 1.0 ultra, copilot pro, preplexity pro and grok ai.
So in other words, would it be accurate to say that using claude 3 in perplexity and selecting "writing" under the"focus section and chat with claude 3 would be the same as to use it through the anthropic website?
Same
Fellow
Need to test the models, lol
It's nuts how were only allowed to use claude 5 times
Yep, more or less
Should be fixed soon, since it was with you.com
Will it matter?
We can only use it 5 times a day
Johnny,
Would you be able to find a way to test claude 3 throigh anthropic and through perplexity and see if there is anything that would make one special or lacking?
You can actually do more, there's a secret method...
But should be fixed anyway, pretty soon.
There's a difference
I am guessing perplexity is currently rate limited.
what's the secret
Ohhh I didn't know that of the 5 times
Claude 3 in preplexity us specially utilized for searching
Claude 3 in thr app is specially utilized for talking with you
Due to this
The answers you receive will be different
For reference I have used Opus 100 < times
Although you could get the same answer if you try
Yep, the system message is different
But you could write your own, which is even better than theirs...
And probably less likely to be hit by a filter too, since it's through the API.
I belive that the writing in the focus section in perplexity will be a chat without searching the internet.
Yep, pretty much
Yeah
What they should do is let you bookmark important responses in a collection, so that other threads in the collection get them in their context.
I can't think of a prompt. I usually use it to paste long research papers or multiple research papers to get information. Then I ask about it. Kind of like chat pdf but claude can proceed all the information verte in my opinion
Hmm.
What kind of paper?
That actually sounds amazing
Yep, pretty basic to implement too.
@agile jay do you think gpt 4 or claude 3 opus outperforms
Ok I thought that was the case, had to ask 🙂
outperforms what?
Firstly, all those benchmarks show GPT4 not GPT4Turbo.
It seems that Claude is better at handling a large context without forgetting what is in it.
So most likely, for long tasks, it will be better.
I see.
Which creative writing, and coding, generally are.
Fr thinking they could be smart and be like teehee we better then gpt4 buy me
I actually prefer claude
I prefer Google
The responses are much more human and it's coding is better
Coding yes it's better
Gpt 4 turbo seems to sound too robotic
Wish it could access real time data tho
I actually don't like that
That is mostly to do with the system message though.
Ngl would be op
And less about the model.
Gemini is the best for translation.
Pretty bad in comparison, at everything else.
Would recommend pi2.5, which is free and around the same performance as ultra, but responds a lot faster too.
Just use a better system message...
You're not alone.
Why is there a cap of 5 messages on Opus
i mean i wouldnt say its because of anthropic
its because of how costly it is
significantly more expensive than 4-turbo
I've noticed that, also response quality is way higher than the gpt 4 turbo
Why perplexity pro very expensive?
Is it?
Invite 2 friends a month and let them pay and it will be free
Perplexity Pro is not really expensive, it's a normal price like the other providers have. And in my opinion, you get quite a lot for your money with Perplexity
Discounts are automatically applied once per billing cycle so you can't get Perplexity Pro for free, but for $10.

Is it true that one weakness of perplexity is short context window? Follow-up questions have problems retain context asked in original question? Anyone has experienced it?
oh alright
Hey, u/DissonantNeuron! The model doesn't have context awareness issue in this case. You have it set to the search mode, so depending on how you put it, there are always two possibilities: 1. your follow-up might be related to the first question 2. your follow-up might be a totally new search, not related to the original question.
And in this example, the way you prompted the model, it decided you're looking for differences in general, relying on the new search results.
My suggestion would be to ask it with a bit more details.

Perplexity cannot keep context in any mode. Here's the proof. I am using Claude Opus in writing mode and am using a file uploaded instead of search results.
https://www.perplexity.ai/search/Can-you-tell-EFwUTvwCRKKp6.HPSjZEFA
From the second response, it starts ignoring the file uploaded (PCI DSS 4.0) and starts answering from it's knowledge base ( which had got only PCI DSS 3.2.1)
Makes me question whether actually Claude Opus was used as the native chatbot (in Claude) didn't hallucinate at all. Perplexity hallucinates multiple times and gives random answers instead of using the template in Appendix E2 from the document uploaded.
I have requested a pro rated refund as I am unable to use it with these issues. It will be great if you could help me with the refund. Tia.
I have attached the answer from native chatbot for reference.

I mean, I believe you just logistically speaking. When I saw that I could do 600 GPT-4 uses a day... with context... I wondered how that was sustainable in any way. Especially when OpenAI only allows non-API a maximum message limit of 213 messages (provided you aren't using it during sleep). The biggest lever to push or pull is context window.

The message limit is way higher on perplexity and is the same price ($20) as Claude and chatgpt separately, while giving access to both . It's kind of crazy they're able to pull this off. I'm guessing they're just subsidizing costs via cheaper api calls (vs subscription) and a large enough user base but that's just speculation from me. Moving the context slider down seems like a way for them to possibly further save on costs as you're suggesting.
Based on the PCI DSS v4.0 document, Requirement 5 has the following sub-requirements:
5.1 Processes and mechanisms for protecting against malicious software are defined and understood.
5.2 Antivirus and anti-malware solutions are deployed on all systems commonly affected by malicious software.
5.2.1 Antivirus and anti-malware solutions are ke...
I cannot make a statement on this if I do not know the PDF.
fair statement. That's why I'm asking other members here if they encounter the same problem. If none, then I'll doubt that reddit comment
I see, what is mentioned there may be related to the way Perplexity handles uploaded files:
Upload plain text or PDF files and Perplexity will use the context of the file to generate answers. Short files will be fed in their entirety into the language model, but longer files will be snippeted past the initial header to find the most relevant text.
This means that if you ask a question about a document, Perplexity will try to find the information in the document without copying the whole file into the prompt.
Hey guys new to this server where is the best way to learn how to use perplexkty ?
Welcome!
You can find a lot of information at https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/faq and https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/getting-started#what-is-perplexity
Thank you !
Only problem with perpelxity is the small context window
you can also check tutorials in this post
I've used it to write code by passing in docs to the file. The context isn't short, just people don't know how LLM's work...
For example, I don't use PDFs since their structure can range too much. Instead I convert them into markdown files.
You can also do txt
Which with utf8 allows for the most bang for your buck
Convert an entire docbase / codebase into a txt file split with comments delineating which file or doc it pertaind to
lmfao just ask perplexity
Hello Thanks for the super programme !
Can someone give me some valid points on why perplexity pro is better than chatgpt plus , if not, Why?
i have both even though i havent had the time to do extensive testing yet. some things to note:
i do a lot of study and ask questions based on documents i provide, GPTs in this regard are excellent because u can make a GPT for a field and load lots of documents and return to that GPT whenever u want to ask more questions on it. chatgpt also seems to hold context better while pplx forgets easily past conversations. chatgpt also feels a lot faster
however pplx gives u access to more models than chatgpt, on top of that searching feature is pretty good (free pplx searches pretty well too)
depends on what youre looking for
for students perplex has 600 msges
students?
i mean for a student whch is better
perplex has a 600 msg limit
but chatgpt has gtps
so
im a student and i use it in my work 600 is plenty plenty for me
all depends on ur usages
Yep, tbh the usage limit is a lot better on perplexity. I would rather have 600 msgs than 40 every 3 hours...
Most people only have a short window when they are active, so 40/3hours means you are wasting a lot of them.
I prefer perplexity because of the quick search. But which is better is gonna be determined by your task and how you use them.
Perplexity is trying to be the next Google search, while ChatGPT is trying to become an AGI assistant.
I've never used ChatGPT plus but I have used Poe extensively, Moemate one month, and YouAi until they banned me for having bots that got used too much, and Perplexity is currently my favorite for having something to talk to and bounce ideas off of.
bruh are you trying to express something?
bot - banned
I asking the same
Oh wait did they update youAi?
Just curious
They said they're updating their pricing model next week, and I'm hoping I'll be unbanned at that point. Though based on how things are priced I may or may not set up another paid bot. It's unsustainable to pay for subscribers usage without having any mechanism to limit abuse.
That's why you add your own ratelimit...
YouAi had a setup where your $23 subscription allows you to publish a public facing bot that can use GPT-4, Claude 2.1, etc, but then if people use your bot too much (i.e., thousands of messages) they just ban your account then leave it up to you to go cancel your subscription through Stripe. That's what I mean about having a bot banned. If you're referring to not understanding some other part of my comment you need to be more clear.
Is the public facing bot managed by you or their server?
Oof. You'd think they would just throttle it. And unless I'm misreading, they don't ban the bot but the account? That's wrong.
It's through their service.
So you can't even add your own ratelimit...
Is there a way to login via email by utilizing a username/password system?
Mistral large has great results, wow I'm quite impressed
Yep, it's less lazy too.
I have PPLX Pro, ChatGPT Pro, Gemini. All ahve their good and bad points
I use perplexity the most. I use Perplexity collections extensivly. The collection specific prompts allow me to craft the results i want and keep them al;l in one place.
ChatGPT I use for GPT builder where I test out new stuff and practice prompt hacking .
Gemmini is new to me but in tests yesterday gave the best results for completness.
Completeness?
same question to all programs. Gemini gave me a full answer, rounded out by verifyiable facts.
Perplexity gave me similat but much more concise. It also cited sources
ChatGPT gave similar results to Perplexity with out cityations. it was also slowest
I was using defauly models on them all
Anyone else getting random app closes on iOS? Just started happening within the last few days.
Wow, for sure gemini advanced is strong too. I'm working on a complex code and he was literally the only one that solved it for me (tried gpt4 via pplx and openai, claude 3 opus and mistral)
plus: it solved for me in less than 5 mins, while the other ones took me some hours
have yall done calculus 10?
?
According to Gemini Advanced Ultra 1.0.
How do you convert pdf to Markdown? What are the best tools to use?
Depends on teh kind of PDF. If it's an image, you need to use OCR to extract the text.
If it's a normal PDF, you check the content file, which links to the pages in order, and then you loop through them and scrape the text, most likely using an xml parser.
nobody asked but the only thing I don't like about Gemini advanced ultra 1.0 is that it will sometimes tell me when its on break and I need to wait 30 minutes to use it again despite being a paid subscriber unlike chatgpt plus or copilot pro I can use it a peak times.
I have very strong opinions on these
I hate ChatGPT Plus
Gemini Advanced is fun but boring at the same time, I only use it when a new feature releases then go try smth else
Copilot Pro is good
They release features in flights tho
No prioritization btw
Claude Pro is literally for Opus
Very good model
But it doesn't offer anything more
ChatGPT Plus, Gemini Advanced, and Copilot Pro have web search
ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, and Copilot Pro (if you're lucky and on desktop) have file uploads
ChatGPT Plus and Copilot Pro (if you're lucky, comes with file uploads but is on mobile too without them) have code interpreter
Multimodality is in all of them, but Gemini's is currently fake (Lens) and Copilot is partially fake because it's fed a description, probably to make the extra OCR and reverse image search integration work together, still is confirmed GPT-V
Lol, you say you hate ChatGPT Plus but don't give a reason.
Which of these AI models excels in a unique manner, primarily aiding in the search for information, providing summaries, and answering questions in a direct and factual way?
- 🔶 Option A: ChatGPT
- 🔷 Option B: Copilot Pro
- 🔶 Option C: Gemini Advanced 1.0 Ultra
- 🔷 Option D: Grok
- 🔶 Option E: Perplexity AI
- 🔷 Option F: Meta LLaMa 3
The clock is ticking. Your million dollars hang in the balance. Choose wisely!
I say chatGPT if you need code interpreter, copilot for a solid free web search AI, Gemini if you like google for some reason, grok if you just want an AI to ask questions to and have the latest info, particularly with the perspective people are putting on twitter, perplexity if you want a solid search and an overall good tool with the latest models, meta LLama 3 if you like open source and take privacy seriously or just want to run it for free if you have good hardware.
My own biased opinion is Perplexity for almost everything, seems like it has the most use cases and is my go too for 90% of what I do, and chatGPT plus for complicated math tutoring (using code interpreter), physics and things that require decimal accuracy, or if I want a graph or other data visualization.
Has LLama 3 been released yet?
Based move is to use gemini 1.5, upload relevant textbooks, and ask questions
I don’t think yet, but I have seen people bring it up 3 times today so I was confused, But when double checking online it seems it’s a little while away
OMG THERES AN UPDATE
troll alert
Wow! Perplexity the goat!
Bro seriously pulled a leg on us 🥲
Anyone experiencing this issue with Perplexity loading and loading and loading? Claude 3 Opus doesn’t work > https://www.loom.com/share/6be018c033f8466184ea3903a15e63aa
Before, Perplexity was working fine when inserting a youtube clip and telling him to make a blog out of it but now I have to give it the actual transcript….I tried now to give it a transcript and IT DOESN’T EVEN RECOGNIZE IT ANYMORE…This tool is downgrading!!! Solve these stupid bugs folks!!!!! Losing my Opus credits as well too with this bulsh1t
Yeah…perplexity is NOT usable anymore; it doesn’t even recognize the attached files for fk sake. Losing my Opus credits for NOTHING.
im sorry for the inconvenience, maybe go back to chatgpt.

Then why are we paying perplexity pro? LOL

Submit a detailed bug report or support request and not just screenshots. I’m sure they will more than willingly be able to assist. This technology is very new still and there will be bumps along the way no matter where you spend your money.
Detailed bug report? Huh? I already shown what’s the issue lol.

great to see Perplexity supporting more and more languages #📢│announcements message
I'm hoping for English to be supported soon
allowed to talk about jailbreaks here?
i'd like perplexity experimental to be even less censored
have been using Copilot; I uninstalled Perplexity to force myself to use Copilot, Gémini, Hugging Chat You Chat. Perplexity is the only real alternative to an AI-powered search engine.
The language barrier is overcome.
Democratize access to the camera for all users.
Have a narrator read aloud.
There are image and video search engines, now we need a music and podcast search engine.

En la era de los GPTs estoy experimentando que con los focus de búsqueda va más rápido que los propios GPTs
Creo que más focus de búsqueda especializados sería una experiencia formidable
In the era of GPTs, I am finding that with search focuses, it is faster than the GPTs themselves.
I believe that more specialized search focuses would be a great experience.
copilot is so great ı asked internships list currently hiring and it gives me a full list of internships do you guys know how can we acces the bing api
It was perfect timing since I wanted to use Claude3. Subscribing to an LLM is quite a dilemma. Can't really quit ChatGPTPlus either.
Having an issue this AM EST Time, where Claude 3.0 is not available, keeps defaulting to GPT 4. Anyone else experiencing the same?
I heard that Claude3 was great for pdf summaries and wanted to use it, but Default is fine for my purposes.
Where did you see this?
Yes, my friend. I have the same problem
got my second acc on claude banned too \🥳
weirdly they stil havent touched my $10 api credits
what u even ask that u can ban lol
its seemingly random
second acc banned on my first input
thats wierd
not related to input
Hi everybody, ChatGPT's hanging all the time and not responding. Cancelled my subscription there and subscribed at perplexity. Was using it for quite sometime but now as a subscriber
Inspect....
I mean tbh chatgptes message limit kills it for me, I like how gemini is Linked with all google apps and thats cool tbh, plus you get unlimited messages.
Mainly I want Claude 2.1 back. It was working pretty well, choosing the right keywords and excelling in summarization. 5 Opus uses/day go away within the first 5 minutes and then you are stuck with Sonnet.
Yeah, but would you rather not have access to Opus at all or get atleast 5 uses a day? There is always the option to just buy a Claude subscription until it is 😄
is there any direct url i can use to start with a reddit search configured in order to be able to create a chrome app with that search?
Sonnet is the direct successor to Claude 2.1 though
Not opus
i have something incredible to share about ai news that i found with perplexity, idk where to put it in this server though.
it is a lot more information than just a link to a perplexity thread so it didnt feel right to put it there in the sharing channel, plus it would get lost quickly probably.
why not say what 'incredible' revelation you have, and then a link instead of pre-seeding clickbait
@fluid mauve
i want to give people a chance to help give it a boost from the beginning instead of having to catch up on to it, but seeing as there hasnt been a response yet i guess i will post here

Claude 3 Opus? More like "Cloudo the Confused!" Thinks it's smarter than a barrel of monkeys juggling wrenches! I tell ya, you give a computer a fancy name, it forgets how to play patty-cake!
so yeah...ai has meta awareness now, and it is better than the average person.

https://www.perplexity.ai/search/are-there-any-t6bd_g.5Rb2ZoM0VrGuEQQ
someone pointed out the study linked on the github
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-06668-3.pdf
from another person from the same place...this is absolutely nuts, achieving more MLC than an average person.
The Lake and Baroni paper also lists "Supplementary Information" with details on how they tested their MLC (Meta-Learning for Compositionality) scenario against ChatGPT 3.5 and 4: https://static-content.springer.com/esm/art%3A10.1038%2Fs41586-023-06668-3/MediaObjects/41586_2023_6668_MOESM1_ESM.pdf
In that document, GPT-4 achieved 58% on their MLC test, which was much better than GPT 3.5. That contrasted with the average human's score of 81% and their MLC method which achieved 93% to 97%. However, the authors were frank and humble, admitting that future progress in pure neural net-based LLMs might achieve improved systematicity without MLC methods. However it was unclear if that would happen, and their current research indicates MLC has the potential to improve current LLMs.
One of the referenced papers was "Measuring and Narrowing the Compositionality Gap in Language Models" (2022, Press, et. al): https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.03350 In this paper, they devised some "compositionality" test questions which then-current (2022) LLMs had problems with, such as "Who won the Master’s Tournament the year Justin Bieber was born?" I tried that on GPT-4, Claude 3.0 and Gemini Advanced 1.0, and they all gave the correct answer, so things are rapidly changing.
Recent advancements in machine learning (ML) have introduced several fundamental techniques that promise to significantly enhance the efficiency, capability, and application of ML models. Two notable developments include the use of machine learning to optimize machine learning workloads and the introduction of Meta-learning for Compositionality ...
We investigate the ability of language models to perform compositional reasoning tasks where the overall solution depends on correctly composing the answers to sub-problems. We measure how often models can correctly answer all sub-problems but not generate the overall solution, a ratio we call the compositionality gap. We evaluate this ratio by ...

i only like using perplexity because of unlimited image generation with playground 2.5, dall-e 3 and stable diffusion xl
Are multiple users allowed to use the same account? I want to give my partner access to my account but I cant find anything in the documentation on whether that'd be against TOS or something.
in hindsight I should've asked perplexity itself lol
(although id worry about potential error)
im too this-image-brained to have faith in an LLM
just you wait haha

oh its not unlimited
lol what was the limit
Did u generate 600 images in a day
i think today i only did like 10
That’s weird, cause I know I’ve done like 20 in one go
playground 2.5 slaps
i wish the input context was larger, my image prompts keep getting squeezed down
and reworded?
hi
Redefining Intelligent Learning
When I try to create an image of a succubus for character design using stable diffusion XL image generation, I get the error "Failed due to moderation. Please try a different query"
yeah like 2 days ago, i went on a spree of like generating 30 images within an hour lol
you can generate 50 images a day
i'm finding that PI AI is getting regular knowledge updates with the latest model update: https://pi.ai/s/fWrfRcoC79cpTSidoWqQB
no wonder
Bug in iPhone:
I cant press send when the text is long in mobile guys. This happens when starting a new chat.
copilot pro is the worst, im talking about the microsoft bing one
the app sucks and even the responces suck
yes every update it gets stricter
chatgpt sucks
love ur profile pic
yours like a NFT
haha i used one of those ChatGPT GPTs to generate it a few months ago
Are the context length for pro for gpt-4-turbo really 128k?
Hello @everyone.
Rust developer is here.
Cosmwasm, cosmos-sdk, solana-sdk, etc.
How do I also make money/invest also or is this a rich person only club?
jeff bezos is in this server
If you take the letters in unknownuser and rearrange them it spells Jeff Bezos
does that make this a rich person also server?
Why cant Perplexity give me the latest news from a Swedish news site like Aftonbladet?
yes
I wonder when pplx will have an AI studio for function calling and fine tuning
what's grok ?
elon's llm
Hi
No lol
No, its near the same level as mistral-7b
Probably worse
thanks! It was the first image I created with pplx
I'm going to make an icon for the perplexity discord, and I'm going to ask AI to do the background, but where should I use for compositing?
When I used canva, it wasn't very easy to use.

is there a discord bot?
Hey, @static grove! There's no discord bot here doing what you can do at https://pplx.ai
I was just wondering if I could add my own perplexity instance w/ an API key to a discord of mine
totally understand - mostly just for collaboration
and i use perplexity quite a bit -thank you 🙂
Thankyou for your hard work sir alex romanov
Sure, you can create your own applications and bots, using the API for your Discord.
okay! thank you !
Oh.. maybe because i am from Russia, we dont have this money for one service and the products in our country is more cheaper
If Anthropic connects their LLM to the internet, they could unlock its full potential, becoming a formidable force in the competitive AI market. It will be game.
They just need their own indexer like, perplexity.
Which makes search feel very fast.
No idea why openai doesn't use the microsoft indexer, to not need to manually search.
Hi everyone, Idk if it is the right section so sorry in advance, I have to redeem the Rabbit R1 coupon for Perplexity Pro, when I click on the blue button in the email it redirects me on the website and it says "Welcome r1 owners. Your complimentary 1-year Perplexity Pro subscription starts now!
Get Started" But when I click get started it redirects to the payment page, without the possibility to add coupon and with the full price
Did anyone experience the same problem? What should I do? I'm trying
I would contact support, on the website
Yeah you're right, I send an email now, I tried first here to check if it was fast to solve
It's a shame that only pro users have access to chat support.
Maybe check inside settings, and see if support is available for free users.
Yep, I try now
Rip, guess it's only for pros
Is there a way to complete translate a korean text file to English?
Thanks
Depends how large it is.
It is about 19 mb
Though can split it up no problem
That is a lot of text, if there are no images...
Tried with google translate but was way off with the translation
No images.
Yup plain old text
Is it a webnovel or something, with a lot of chapters?
Can't think what else could be so large as just text.
Yup, of course for personal use( just adding for educational purposes, just to be safe)
I would probably do chapter by chapter, and make it pass a summary of the previous chapter/s to the next chapter, so it keeps the context.
You have to complete the process on the Stripe page as if you wanted to take out an annual subscription, i.e. you have to enter your payment details, the discount will only be displayed at checkout.
I see, thanks alot, let me try a sample
If it's like solo leveling, you probably want it to keep the names of movies/abilites etc in the summary, so they match between chapters.
Well this going to take some time then, thanks alot though
If you automate it, then you could just make it generate the next chapter, when you enter a chapter, that way it would feel instant.
I tried with a card with less then 200 $ and the payment got rejected, I'm a bit scared to try with my main card, if the coupon does not show I will loose my money ? 😆
You'll see the discount on the page with the final buy button.
The price will then be $0.
But you need an approved payment method for this 🙂
Okay thank you, I'll try it now
If you are unsure about the last step before subscribing, you can also send a screenshot.
Congress votes to ban TikTok THIS WEDNESDAY. This is your LAST CHANCE to act. Find your rep and make your voice heard! #KeepTikTok
I clicked Get Started, so now I have this, here I put my info and I click "Pay and subscribe"?
These are my 3 steps, first get started, then I click on annual on the left and then that is the screen I see
Idk It's a bit strange, becuase it seems that when I click that button I'm paying that amount, I do not have the chance to put any reedem code right now
Yeah also on reddit they were saying it should be around there but I'm not seeing it
Idk why
Hey, @spare schooner! Did you have a free trial before getting the R1 promo? Have you sent a message to support@perplexity.ai?
Nope I didnt do the free trial, still I havent sent the message to the support, I will now
Got it, no worries, please email us the details of the account and your rabbit email, we'll help you apply it, as by that step the code input with the code should have appeared already.
Okay, thank you very much, I'm sending the email!
Where are you from? I ask it, because romanov - is russian name)
Should I send in the email also my coupon code that I got in the rabbit email?
Oh, i was ghosted(
No idea on how to do that
Proobably has notifications from being @ed or replied, disabled.
I imagine they get spammed a lot.
I believe pro members get free $5 credit for the perplexity api a month. You could probably do it using that.
Thanks will look into that
How to create your own AI chatbot?
Depends, do you just want to create the interface, or actually make your own model...
my own model. i want to share it afterwards with perplexity or others.
Then RIP, you probably don't have the money or hardware to do so.
You can't create your own bots with Perplexity (Perplexity is not a chatbot provider) but you can use collections and share them with friends 😉 https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/faq/what-is-collections
Yep, collections are basically like GPT's but with less functionality.
Just the ability for a custom system message.
Lol
I mean, Google kind of botched Gemini's launch
Gemini was almost immediately overshadowed by Claude 3 in terms of overall technical and behavioral performance
its probably not helping gemini 1.5 still isnt publicly out
cooler UI
UI is more or less irrelevant.
idk man thats like half the reason im here
Pretty icons? Seriously?
who said anything about pretty icon
depends on your use case i guess, i find perplexity more helpful when searching for academic journals & papers for work
Claude 3 is goated
I'm loving it
I wanna see 1.5 ultra
I'm also curious what OpenAI is cooking up with GPT 5
im new to perplexity as i just purchased a rabbit r1. can i cancel my chatgpt 4 subscription if i usually use it for programming and calculus? is perplexity just as good or better?
oh perplexity has gpt 4
so shouldnt it be just as good pretty much
you.com is just a money grab with very limited input and output, poe has less messages with an illusion of being a lot
I’d wager it looks like a copy cat of Perplexity
It is
I think Claude 3 is the new king of AI, for however long it lasts
The AI sphere changes so quickly it’s hard to say how long it’ll remain the king of AI
Is it a free app?
Claude can be accessed either through Anthropic’s website or through Perplexity
For free?
How?
Free Claude 3 is still way more of a GPT4 equivalent than Gemini is though imo
But how do you access Claude for free?
get read to be banned on your first prompt
Download perplexity or go to anthropics website
I tried their website and it says not available in Canada
Use a VPN...
I have the app but how do I choose Claude
Which app?
Perplexity free
You can't if you are free tier
You a writer?
No
Scrivener?
Haha oh
Not to write, or not to use Scrivener?
You were asking if I use that app?
Do you know what scrivener is?
I thought you were just referencing my name
It's an desktop app for writing books.
True but it’s also the subtitle of the book named after me
How well does it work?
That sounds interesting
It's one of the most popular ones. It's pretty old though, so haven't tried it in a while.
Ask perplexity, lol
what about iA writer have u tried that
I would say it’s just as good but it’s all personal preference. Would definitely play with it before canceling.
Is that the markdown writer?
Will buy up to $1M of Perplexity shares at 50% premium to implied value from latest funding round, at industry standard terms. Will not waste your time.
It's not for me, since I write my books in VS Code, using markdown. Or using neovim.
Has anyone made a discord bot yet with the Perplexity API?
yes, I just paid $200 because they baited me with that fake claude 3 opus. fortunately I was able to dispute the $200.
Oh was the you.com unlimited thing fake?
yes sir, unlimited fake is the best word for it
im going to sue that site
with that money i will give it to alex romanov
I've only used it once. Looks like a random copy of ChatGPT+Perplexity.
as I understand it, this is possible w/ perplexity but the focus is not on chatting but search
In general I dont need an all purpose chatbot that can sort of do everything bc that isn't a task im doing. If I am programming I want something that works well with code (shows diffs of suggested changes, understands context on a function or namespace level not just my previouus X words)
Yep, perplexity markets itself as the next Google.
if im searching, I am looking for something that gives me sources and answers
recently sundar pichai is resigning but nobody knows why, I can tell you why
||it's because he is joining perplexity.||
Lol
lol
Definitely not related to Gemini fumble...
So much lost time on Gemini
Perplexity shoul remove the option to select LLMs in the first place, that's overcomplicating it already. IMO it's their job to figure out what model is best for a search, not ours. It's clunky picking different models
Another thing, you think Google destroyed "AI SEO" because they just decided to do it? No Let me tell you why:
||It's because everyone laughed at them for their problematic image generation, so google is doing this "AI SEO" counter act to get a share of the laughter.||
I would disagree, you don't even have to change the models and the free version uses their model. I think its perfect for simple and complex users.
more focus options, more cusotmizability in the concept of threads/collections
...
Even complex users aren't basing thieir LLM selection on anything real
just what "feels" better at a given moment
I mean thats the whole AI world atm lol
sure, I'm saying if perplexty is trying to differentiate and create a search product
move away from the market of "select your LLM chatbots"
Really? I do it based on the task, since models score differently at different tasks.
They are working on their own model that eventually they will solely use but I don't think thats anytime soon.
if Claude-3 is th event for code, use it to help with code searches
if its not, don't
How many people only have pro because they want to use those models...
and if perplexity can't determine if claude-3 is the best for search, well, there's a problem they should work on
how many people have pro to begin with?
I'm not saying don't use the models
im saying that their moat should be doing it for you
I think the issue there is that the best LLM is always changing. So to give your user's whiplash like that would ruin the product and push people away. Giving options lets people choose what they like best whether its PPLX LLM, GPT4, Claude, etc and stick with it.
No, at most they should have an auto option in models.
if you're researching something X model excels at, use that. don;'t make the user click a box and then try to iterate through them
True
look at all the quesitons online of people asking what model to use etc
I want to choose the model I'm using...
I think the problem atm is they haven't perfected their own model yet so they are trying to give people something.
Only if you care about it, and actually go into the settings.
you don't want to choose the model you're using - you want the best result possible for your query
Also they are a small team.
What do you do when there isn't a best model for a query?
Or the query has multiple questions and different models are good for each part of it?
default to the cheapest if they're all the same
If i don't get the results I like I usually go to another LLM lol
The problem is that models have randomness to them, so there is no best model, there is just the one you prefer.
Especially since the models answer the same question differently.
yeah, this should be done for you. you shouldn't be getting exults that are better with another model, same as you shouldn't be getting the best google answers on page 2
People like certain models because of how those models answer questions differently.
I'm not saying don't use different models
I'm saying, a product wher the user is expected to hop around models to find the best result
is going to be passed by a company that does the same thing but just picks the model for you
Idk, I would disagree. For the average person who knows nothing.. sure... but I would rather be able to choose because Google/OpenAI/PPLX do not know what I want 100% of the time.
If you are paying for pro, you already care about models enough to learn the difference lol, or just choose the best overall model...
so then, in that case, perplexity should be detecting this and directing to a different model
yeah we are not there yet, but maybe one day they can read my mind
different models = good, different models the user needs to find out which is best=bad
Also custom instructions affect different models differently...
google let me do lang:en or lang:es etc to choose my results
but it makes reasonable default guesses based on a number of factors
Wouldn't it be great if shops knew what I wanted to buy before I bought them?
how many people DON'T have pro because they just want the best search results possible and cant figure out which of the 5 options they're supposed to use?
yeah, they kind of do in 2024..
They obviously don't, since I've never gotten any good recommendations.
None, since you can't choose models in free mode, so they wouldn't know...
its not a multi-billion dollar industry because it doesn't work 🙂
no, they see a daunting prompt about having all these diffferent AI models and decide pro isn't for them
No, they pray on people who buy stuff they don't need, and don't end up using.
"Pro" should just mean to the average user "We use the advanced version of models when we perform your search"
not "hope your'e up to date on the latest benchmarks"
Pro, means you're a professional and should know the difference...
so then why do people pay for targeted advertising?
We both know "Pro" no longer means professional in 2024 haha
Impulse buying.
But, why targeted?
it clearly works, even if apparently not on you
Well most people aren't buying every ad they see are they?
Claude-3 is currently the best at programming, no?
So clearly it only works a small fraction of the time.
My queries related to code should be claude-3, period.
If some advanced user wants to use sometihing etc sure
No it isn't. Depends on the programming language. The output language and how lazy the model is.
otherwise what is perplexity even offering? just another chatbot? there are tons of these that let you select the model
Okay, then whatever is best for my programming language.
I would hope as a company they're investing in more than just a UI and REST API calls
Hopefully they are pros in all of them.
are they not devleloping technology that evaluates queries?
Most of the work is in the indexer I imagine.
Since it has to keep on crawling to keep stuff up to date.
Yes, actually, I'd expect them to have a good benchmark for which model performs best in which programming language
if your pitch is LLM+search, I kind of expect a lot of your tech to be finding out which LLM is best for which search
Also there is already an API that does what you said.
So maybe advanced users who know the specifics of the LLM models they want should be the ones using an API
and the average customer should just get the best guess, which is better than no guess
people want a simple search box that gives he best possible results
A random user is generally not paying $20/month on something they don't understand.
yeah, exactly.
the average user isn't going to pay $20 a month if they need to know the latest on all LLMs. they will pay $20 a month if it results in "pro" searches that give clearly better results
IDK, mostly seems like you are annoyed you don't know the best model for your queries.
Oh im not annoyed i just started using it
i just dont think you're going to get most consumers onboard wi thneeding to pick between "perplexity" "experimental" and "claude" on every search
if the goal is to be a niche tool for specific users, sure. if the goal is too be the "google of LLMs", the current approach requires teaching everyone how to stay up to date on LLM changes and different specialities etc. I don't think that' going to get a very wide audience.
RIP, can't find that API which already has an endpoint for chooseing the best model for the query.
the google of LLM can't tell folks to go use an API
most people dont know what that is
Too bad for them then.
well, no, I think they'll find a company willing to do that for them
If it was easy, it would already be done
there are already router programs on git
github
found from this reddit post: https://new.reddit.com/r/ChatGPT/comments/1bcb04s/this_is_how_you_know_whether_they_trained_off_an/
and yeah, this is called a moat
LOL
Maybe it has a lot of memes in it's training data, unless the image was a 1 to 1, of the meme.
this was the best take I saw so far on it.
is the orignal copy-righted if it's become a "internet meme"? and should the model just print the meme verbatim? probably not.
one of the funnier arguments/exercises I went through in the last few weeks was trying to get Dall-E to generate essentially an image of a hacker sitting at his desk wearing a Chiefs jersey. Trying to get Dall-E to not generate a stereotypical re-rendering of a stock photo where the subject was NOT wearing gloves was neigh impossible
and after reading a couple papers on the topic of bias in ML models generally that's actually a heck of a good illustration of how it works
thats what you.com does with their 'genius model' hiding the underlying llm as it apparently uses the 'best' ones
which is a big factor why im not considering them
best thing pplx can do rn is have a small info page explaining which llms excell at what
which they already do i think?
for me, I use the individual LLMs via their APIs when i need them in a project
when im searching i want: a box, then answers
tho im losing interested in pplx too
cant even read past response unless directly asked
looks interesting might try it
most of the models give pretty much similar results for my queries
claude understands my documents better
and if gemini is ever introduced i felt gemini vision was better than gpt4V
it's actually quite nice. the UI is pretty good, you basically have a file system live google drive or so, and can ask questions at the folder level or pdf level
rsponse view is side by side with pdf and highlights/links to the parts in its answers. no online functionality iirc
not perfect, none of them are. internet connectivity could be nice. or a negative
inference on a lot of models is ok on ipad m1, starting to just want a local app that does this
all clear fam. i couldn't figure out how to word it, so maybe user error.
even with a more direct prompt from knowyourmeme. that one seems "safe".
@atomic stirrup
The server here is not meant to search for employees, thank you!
Claude 3 Censorship Is Insane, I am canceling my subscription bro.
Maybe you guy should to, I think I should use Poe Instead.
It been spilling ethics for five minutes and preaching religion for five minutes now, bro thought he Is Jesus Christ or something.
I just done with Claude bro.
Claude 3 is the best coder that I’ve tried. Copy and paste code has never been easier.
Good morning,
I have two doubts:
-
Does Perplexity use Claude 3 Opus or another type of Claude 3?
-
Is there any way to prevent them from knowing that I have copied the text, that is, avoid the detection of plagiarism, whether it is a promt or similar?
-
It uses Claude3 Opus
-
There are plagiarism tools online to check for that.
What tools are there? And that if you have an IOS app, it’s better...
I use zerogpt premium, but feel free to choose anything that works for you. I'm not sure if there is an iOS app.
The daily limit for picture generations and the Claude 3 Opus usage, when does it reset exactly? Is it 0:00am in my timezone or in a specific one which is the same for all accounts? And can I see how many I have left?
do old chats disappear when there are too many?
like bing ai chats disappear after a couple months and many chats later
No, there are no actual tools that work that can detect AI generated text. In any of those sites, take stuff written before ChatGPT was released and see what they score...
Openai tried to make one for teachers, but it ended up not working.
The only real way to tell is to compare against what you've released previously.
Anecdotally I've heard there have been a few horrible false positive cases already with accusations of AI generation that are probably mistaken and definitely unproveable. I think it's turning plagiarism detection into a bit of a nightmare.
By appearances detecting AI writing is an arms race that the detectors are losing, barring some breakthrough.
Hi. I’m a Pro subscriber and have joined from the discord link on the Perplexity settings, but I don’t seem to have access to Pro channels
Try ripping the extracted text out of the PDF and cleaning up the text. I've found indices and tables of contents inside large docs gum everything up
Interesting. Thank you mate.
Yeah the system needs to adapt by either doing in person essays or something
Just as a user not really trying across hours of usage I can tell "ChatGPT style" to an extent, but honestly other models are better at varying their style and vocabulary, and I think a core problem is even if a model has a particular set of favorite tokens due to its weights and such there are so many fine tunes out there that between the variety of models and the ability to tweak sampling/filtering parameters like temperature and top-k the countermeasures seem far easier on the generating side.
Right now you probably still get caught if you just rip text and leave it in "ChatGPT style", or more likely don't vet hallucinated content and just submit a paper with lies in it.
The way Harvard is doing it with CS50x is such a good example with their "rubber duck debugger" though (cs50.ai)
They did their own fine tune, left it to the honor code to only use their AI for help (I might be miswording this), and kind of acknowledge the reality of the situation that people use AI but don't learn if they offload too much to it
I wonder if there are educational companies trying to do that in the general sense, help schools/courses provide AIs that help but don't give up everything for the sake of struggling while learning
Personally I don’t understand the diagram option if it doesn’t even work correctly 👀
How do you get access to the Pro role if you have Perplexity Pro?
Thx
Don't worry, that will change over time.
How did that work tho? I didn’t know you can have certain invite links for certain roles.
Oi how everyone doin
Wait wait I just noticed that we get 500 with claude now? Sweet!
But mine still says only 5
hello, can anyone help me about perplexity? 😅
😭 😭
That's what the server is for! ☺️
Poor guy is trying his best
I want to send you my request in private, because I'm a bit hesitant to send it to the server.
can i send?
Sure
I have pro tho @halcyon coral
Yes, without Pro you can't use Claude. With Pro you get 600 uses for Claude Sonett/GPT-4/...the first 5 uses with Claude 3 are Opus
Yes, it's from the new Claude 3 family the second model
Has anyone already done the following?
- Write input in your native language
- Force Perplexity AI to conduct the search in English
- Output texts in your native language (or the same as the input language)
Anyone else having trouble with chatgtpturbo crashing when trying to use it for searches?
GPT-4 Turbo works fine for me on Perplexity, but it crashes 60% on ChatGPT...
Interesting. I had it set as my default model on perplexity on iOS and i had to change it to Claude… now even if I try to get a rewrite using gtp it still crashes
I've never had any problems with it tbh and it's also strange that Claude works for you.
When did you experience the crashes?
Yesterday and today with a few different searches.
gpt*
or does gtp have some meaning idk of ?
Me spelling it incorrectly lol. Thanks … gpt-4 turbo to be correct
Hi, I have a bit of weird issue, All my query with image attached and default focus says "Error in processing query", but text only query works. Image only works when I disable pro search and set to writing.
Can I copy texts without citation numbers?
I don't want to see nums in my digital notes 😦
perplexity.ai can't respond when i throw my logo designs, what could be the reason? i am a pro user...
Hey, @sinful pine! Could you share a bit more details about the case. What happens when you upload pictures and what are you trying to do with them?
is it possible to automatically scroll down with answers like chatgpt ui? is it possible to change search focus without doing new thread? is it possible to change focus when in new thread with a shortcut (having to use the mouse is crazy)
Hey, @spice lance! You can save several shortcuts in your browsers search settings, starting new threads with a chosen focus
Currently, there's no option to switch the focus mid thread and we don't scroll down automatically like chatgpt.
hi 🙂 how do i create such browser shortcuts?
Oh, sorry, forgot to add an example: #⚡│ask-community message
Hi everyone, is it possible to upload a pdf script into a thread on iOS to be used as source whenever I ask something in this specific thread?
The idea is to upload my study script and use perplexity as a sparring partner. Maybe even to let it create exercises from the script i‘ve uploaded.
File upload is currently only possible via https://pplx.ai
Hey there! Thanks a lot for your quick reply😊🙏🏼 I‘ll use the website for this case then.
Are threads synced between web & mobile? Thinking about setting everything up on the web version and use it mobile whenever I am not at home
Hey @upbeat knoll!

Yes threads are synced
i tried again but this time fixed... i dont know how...
Is perplexity supposed to use gemini under the hood?
I'm not sure how it's supposed to work but from what I can see it's just running gemini's api?
Came around a yt video about perplexity and decided to try it out, and from what I can see, it's indeed using gemini's api coz the responses match. Still idk, correct me if I'm wrong.
I believe they stopped using Gemini. You are getting that response because of the sources being passed in, lol.
The default model is a fine-tune of GPT 3.5 and lamma2.
I asked it a genuine question though the response matched gemini
Please check this, it's the same "issue" #1198438847877480629
Yep, people don't get how LLM's work it seems.
a lot of times they couldn’t care less either, it’s kinda sad ngl
I've got a question? Is the Nothing Perplexity Pro offer stackable with the Rabbit Perplexity Pro offer? What I mean by that is can the 1 year I would get for buying a Nothing 2a be set up to start when the 1 year I got for buying a Rabbit r1 ends?
Thankyou for your hard work guys.
Nope, only 1 coupon at once, I believe.
But it would be one at a time. I could even let a bit of time elapse between the r1 offer and the 2a offer.
Some might only apply for new pro users.
That's the condition I was wondering about tbh.
I believe it is Mistral 7B.
@neat elk @wheat granite Hey, My name is Parv Jain and I am a senior in high school. I am interested in Business, AI, and Tech and intend to major in these fields. I love Perplexity and love the technology and mission and would love to help out in any way possible. Please let me know if you know any other things I can do to help out with testing/research purposes or marketing/business wise, helping with partnerships or anything else. I would love to get started and help out at Perplexity!
Will make Perplexity Pro free, if Mikhail makes Microsoft Copilot free
lol
I seen this lol. Was going to post it.
But imagine though. Ad based Perplexity.ai pro.
Mikhail needs to step up the game. Remove the cost per month, add ads. I'm keen.
Alex is typing a novel lol. 😂
Hey, @inner gale! Glad to see you're willing to help, but please avoid tagging the team directly. For all job applications kindly check pplx.it/careers. Thank you!
Didn't Aravind try to hire someone from Google as well?
Will do! There is nothing on the careers page for my qualifications but please keep me in mind if you need any interns.
The Perplexity.ai ceo going all out.
As soon as the person who was planning to leave Google for Perplexity.ai told Google about his offer, the candidate/employee told Google and Google offered him 4 times the amount of money Aravind offered for him to stay at Google.
lol is this the same as the meta employee he tried to get?
That's crazy. 4 times, Google offered lol.
Wow
This apparently according to the article for the Meta employee was about Perplexity.ai not having enough compute.
Really goes to show how underpaid people are
Yee I mean I am pleb but I have seen it where I work, sometimes the most important, useful people are also loyal and just get no compensation and don't fight for what they're worth
And our entire employment system is based around rewarding job hoppers and punishing loyalty and is unlikely to swing in the other direction anytime soon
Yeah true
Gemini ultra model option soon? 👀
I’m in batch 1, should be just a few weeks now
Anything special about it that can't be done with mobile phone?
Yep, LAM. There’s no app for that.
Hmm, gotta research that.
As we await news on a larger Opus allowance, I'm hoping Anthropic isn't just sitting on their API devs, jailyard bully style until their compute capacity is increased
I have no evidence, just a speculative concern based on users complaining of throttling on the official claude.ai service.
Just be aware,
It’s not a phone replacement, wasn’t designed to be.
It cannot text message or take calls.
Here, I fixed your link:
Does anyone know if there is a url parameter to use pro search by default (default search engine)? This works: https://www.perplexity.ai/?q=%s but always runs the search without pro enabled.
What if Anthropic just did an email saying Dear devs who actually use our API for services, we are out of compute. You get no more until we say so. This email never happened. Love, Anthropic
Man I tried to upload the great gatsby on Claude few days ago and couldn't 😭
Did they reduce context size for free users?
The book only showed as 30k Tokens to me on gemini 1.5
I've been using it for finding the best deals, and and the best of certain type of product based on reviews. Really so much you can do with Perplexity.
Once perplexity goes mainstream, Google Search is gonna be screwed
interesting...
Thats literally Google on steroids lol
Google has Gemini now. Unfortunately, performance is inferior to GPT4 and Claude 3 at the moment. If Gemini doesn't improve, Google is screwed. With its enormous resources, too early to write off Google now
Google can realistically dump so much money into it before deciding it should be killed
Apple has also hinted at AI related updates in their coming software releases. Another competitor in the market it sounds like.
I am very interested to see what they come out with. They however are much slower than the rest of the AI space so I wonder if this will be a constant thing and if it will hurt or help them.
Yeah I agree with you. I mean, the Apple Vision Pro was a delayed item and it came out as a pretty solid first gen device for them showcasing that they’ve improved the mindset of first generation devices of theirs
Inferior but I find it pretty convenient to use for mobile lol
will perplexity ever get code interpretation?
it would be nice for it to be able to run, say, python scripts to get accurate calculations and solve complex math problems
maybe send the video link instead of the thumbnail?

Welcome to my channel where i bring you the latest breakthroughs in AI. From deep learn...
@neat elk ||sorry for ping, just curious tho||
comments are pretty brutal lol
The only ai channel I trust and am willing to watch is AI Explained
Lmao
i mean tbf seems a weird direction. Synthesing reviews from different / competing platforms might be useful. But this is pretty basic. I'd rather it perfected general internet searching before going down niche paths like this
I'm with you there - he does a really good job
Yeah who ever checks the yelp page
Please add &copilot=true
is preplexity good for coding?
guys whats best way to summarise a pdf on perplexity pro- and which is the best "AI model" to use- or does this not matter?=
Focus mode should be writing. Not sure what the pdf is about but I’d use GPT4 or Perplexity for quick generation. Could also use one of your Claude Opus responses if it’s important to ya.
to use claude opus do i just go to settings and change the model to claude3?
and ask normally?
Yep!
how do you mean focus mode?
You can change the focus mode with various options. Like the image referenced.
where is that option in web browser/laptop
many thanks!
when i ask it to summarise the text from a youtube transcript it says it cannot because its copyrighted???
Just say you want a summary for your YouTube video, to post online or something like that.
Claude tends to do your command when you explain why you need it fulfilled.
imo it's great for coding, I use it daily as a SE. It has saved me a lot of time in troubleshooting.
u using the gpt 4 turbo in perplexity
for coding
For coding I mostly use Claude 3 Sonnet.
oh i thought theres only opus in perplexity
You have 5 opus uses after that it will use sonnet
Is claude 3 better than gpt4 turbo for coding?
ohh right right
I usually use bingai copilot for coding
Gpt4 turbo is still better at coding
There model thing they showed beating gpt4 was just normal gpt4 and not turbo
For some reason bing ai is better at remembering previous messages compared to perplexity
@tame current I kinda agree on that one
in most of my cases claude seems to hallucinate less. Most of the time I can basically copy/ paste pieces of code and it will work, this was not the case with gpt4 for me.
Mostly to do with the sources, since they fill the context faster.
I wonder if it just preserves the query-response-query-response chain (i.e. and none of the sources/context that were used to inform each response) in the context window? Would make a major difference (and hard to understand the discrepancy, given bing/copilot is powered by gpt4 iirc)
The number of sources used by perplexity is just a lot larger.
I've had many searches where it's using over 20 sources
Guess it also depends on the actual number of tokens used by each source. Like it's not the full article (given the "snippets" language used by Perplexity)
But without knowing how each system actually uses the material from each source, it seems kinda hard to put it down just to the number of sources retrieved imo
Doesn't perplexity use Google for search results ?
It can scrape results from any search engine
not sure imo
No, they have their own indexer
Which is why it's so fast.
https://youtu.be/RTCVzZb3RTE?si=f6g5qVBr1NldkVB_&t=1982
they use other indexes and crawler as like a starting point but they're also focusing on making their own indexer as well, seems to be quite a huge task to undertake
(starting at 33 mins roughly)
Today we're joined by Aravind Srinivas, CEO of Perplexity AI, a chatbot-style AI conversational engine that directly answers users' questions with sources and citations. Matt & Aravind discuss Perplexity's founding story, the platform itself, and more.
This session was recorded live at a recent Data Driven NYC, our in-person, monthly event ser...
but also why there are some gaps (not a criticism; just a reality)
as for how its fast, they might cache websites or pre-fetch data or something and maybe their own indexer has those common websites, its hard to say though
nice, thanks
indexing is kinda by definition caching, no?
yeah
Like you take a snapshot and put that in the index
It's fast because they're using embeddings.
It's how Google works, too.
i see
Good morning
Every RAG system uses embeddings/vectors - I don't think that accounts for the speed. I think they've just optimised and done this whole AI supported internet search at scale and better than anyone else yet
But it's not clear to me that there's any secret sauce - they just do it well 🤷♂️
I thought their secret sauce was the whole page ranking system underlying the algorithm
And then they're able to crawl the web at a breadth and frequency that noone else really can just due to the resources required to maintain that coverage / rececency across so much of the surface web
The page ranking works based on which pages are used most for queries. And they are de-merited if the page made the answer worse etc.
A pretty simple design, but don't know how many users actually rate the responses.
Also for rare queries I imagine it performs worse.
"The page ranking works based on which pages are used most for queries"
This isn't my wheelhouse so I may be way off, but that really is not how I understood the page ranking system to work in terms of Google's algorithm
I'm talking about perplexity.
ohhh sorry right gotcha
Google uses embeddings, SEO, Popularity and back links.
Not including advertising, which gets pushed to the top.
google killed ai seo
yeah but (at least before SEO...), I thought back links were actually the central part of it all. Like it basically borrowed from academic papers: more citations [generally] = more credibility / authority. Like kinda explained in the screenshot
Well they tried to, but people will then just use other indexers.
The order was not in what's most important. Just the different techniques.
understood 👍
But pretty sure the most important is gonna be the most popular/viewed pages.
Lol, even though that incentivizes to link to your other papers/pages to increase your Q score.
I don't really get that lol but whatever they did, it's fair to say it has worked pretty well for them...
Not really, since people are getting more and more pissed off about the search results.
They are just lucky they own most of the market before the problems started popping up.
if you don't think google has been a successful company then we are coming at this from very different angles 😅
anyway..
Google is successful, but that is mainly related to advertising and good acquisitions.
I can't remember a recent thing they've made which was successful and wasn't just an acquisition.
It's also why they have the largest graveyard in big tech.
the company's success is inextricably linked to its position as the world's dominant search engine - no one would pay for ads, and it would no have money to acquire other ocmpanies, if it didn't do that core function better than any other company to get it to that position in the first place
I get that the quality has degraded ("add Reddit" etc) and it has released/acquired a whole graveyard of failed products
but it's google lol
I think a good point to make is also the most recent calls from investors to have the current CEO step down. Thats usually a sign that things are not going well: https://www.businessinsider.com/calls-for-google-ceo-sundar-pichai-alphabet-step-down-ai-2024-3
I'm sure coca cola has fired a bunch of CEOs over the years
Doesn't make it a failed company lol
Lol this comment from their 20th every emploee made some good points: https://twitter.com/marissamayer/status/1763354254956429326
@othman Very thought provoking post, @Othman! Not sure I agree with all of your views, but my takeaways are:
- Google needs to start caring more about winning in AI than about internal politics/political agendas. From the outside, it appears there’s a high level of “hand-tuning” going…
I never said they failed. I said they are degrading/dying.
Their main ways of making money are slowly dying.
For example using perplexity, do you see search ads?
When you have more models like Sora, then YouTube will also start having competition.
Google is definitely not failed, just not keeping up.
fair yeah "failed" was a misrepresentation - I'll accept that
it just seems like the same as saying the US isn't a superpower because it does dumb things like invade Iraq
I mean it's true, but kinda misses the whole "superpowe" bit
This page made me laugh
ya man im on bing now or baidu, even yandex
But yeah for sure, if the argument is just that Google has passed it's prime and it's slowly downhill for it from here etc - I guess I'd say I prob agree
And what preceded all of that...?
Google search
uncle sundar pichai
Yep, that's the problem though. Since people are using Google less, their main source of revenue is being harmed.
I mean according to that chart, ad revenue from search is up 11% yoy, and makes up $44bn of the total $60bn in ad revenue it gets (YT by comarison makes up $8bn)
Off topic- Granted that I used an Image from EconomyApp to create it, but the image of " How Google Makes Money" bears a striking resemblence to an article I wrote on Medium about creating Plotly sankey diagrams.
https://medium.com/@twelsh37/further-adventures-in-plotly-sankey-diagrams-fdba9ff08af6
But then again. maybe they just did it themselves without reading my article.
Yep, it's a normal diagram, pretty sure the one I posted was posted on reddit.
Hi! I would like to know who made the illustrations on the app and the web. That one for example. Thanks!
Definitely a well done image, although i think it may be AI generated cause of hand issue lol
I'm off to play with it in Stable diffusion 😛
re thinking its AI generates. are you basing that on the finger spacing on the left hand?
Yeah
or the 3 fingers. DOH!!! m
Im very excited for SD3. Can't wait for it to release
It will be even more beautiful with my face in it :P. not that i've dome any image to image stuff yet
i only see 4 fingers
whats this dall e 3? playground 2.5? stable diff xdl?
probably just a single nucleotide polymorphism
ah
Hi, where can i find a "roadmap" for Perplexity?
lmao love this
I don't believe there is a public one. There is a lot of feedback/ideas/requests that get shared here and the team responds to them with any information they currently have or can provide.
Thank you for your answer, so basically i've to make myself one, with no potential dates?
I would check out the #💭│ideas or #👉│feedback-general areas to see if anything you are looking for has been suggested or even maybe suggest it yourself if it hasn't been suggested. The team usually responds and provides an idea of what to expect.
hey gang how are you all.
I'm new to this slack and I thought the community and the product was incredible but I was looking a leverage this tool for a little bit of help and it seems like I'm in a chat with a bunch of superintelligence bright people. I am looking for an AI to generate assets for me a lot like supplement labels and content for creative while also having an API built out for some small stuff I need to market my business and to pass financial data from one environment to another.
Does anyone have any pointers or direction where I could start with this while being not that technical? if so feel free to direct message me so I don't blow up a common space with personal things
Hi, Welcome. I would say to write out a well structured question and ask perplexity for help in doing that.
I would then read up on what perplexity suggested including reading/watching the citations, then re askthe question again, with your newfound knowledge.
Will do I'm brand new to using this AI and I have been very impressed so far. Like shocked
just dont take everything you read as truthful. As we say in CyberSecurity, "Trust, BUT VERIFY"
welcome! deep dive ➤#💬│general message you can start with tutorials from this post
always be skeptical but yeah it's really incredible what AI can do - the more you use these systems, the more you will understand their capabilities and limitations, and get the most out of it
I find it wild that there are people who are almost totally dismissive of 'ChatGPT' as just a fad... they're getting left behind quickly ha
for sure my productivity has probably jumped up north of. 60% between this and notebook LLM, things have changed for me
I keep forgetting about Notebook LLM. It still isn't available outside of US of A. I iniyially used my VPN to take an look. but cant be bothered doing that all the time
I've been using it for some pretty hard-core research. So what I usually do is I go to Google scholar type in the subject that I want information on and then pull 20 or 40 different PDFs of research and then upload it into notebook llm and have it explained everything to me so if anyone wants to see an example of it I can drop you over a link of something that I used it for the other day where I think once you put eyes to it you'll understand how big of a deal that is for anyone who wants to launch a business but doesn't wanna make unfounded claims or anything along those lines
My productivity is also up due to AI, and you are correct about the people who don't get it. Its not a fad and it will end up changing the working landscape.
Another tool I use a lot for summarizing you tube vids etc is Daniel Miesslers fabric . I just cpy the trandscript and get a summary of the video, I can then decide whether its worth watching. I sift a lot of these now and stick them in a db. its growing by the day. https://github.com/danielmiessler/fabric
heres an abridges extract of the previous video on GPT 4.5
SUMMARY:
The video discusses a potential leak of GPT 4.5 by OpenAI,...
IDEAS:
- The potential leak of GPT 4.5 has stirred speculation and analysis within the AI community.
QUOTES:
- "Jimmy Apples essentially tweeted This...I'm sure it's an accidental typo."
HABITS:
- Regularly monitoring and analyzing AI industry news and leaks.
FACTS:
- GPT 4.5 is rumored to have leaked, with speculation fueled by tweets from credible sources.
REFERENCES:
- Tweets from Jimmy Apples regarding the potential leak of GPT 4.5
RECOMMENDATIONS: - Stay informed about AI developments by following credible sources and analyzing patterns in releases.
- Compare new AI models against industry benchmarks to assess their potential impact.
It uses chatGPT API to pull back the information and he has what he calls patterns for his prompts.
I'm looking to use Perplexity API to pull the info and switch out ChatGPT, but that could be the same for any Ai with and API and prompt
I am running it under windows subsusyem for Linux (WSL)
Perhaps I should go take another look. Thats the issue with all the AI turmoil, so many Tools so little time. I have spent the last week installing and then learning Stable diffusion and ComfyUI just so I can talk about it authoratativly.
Notebook LLM would have been a great 'assistant' for my MSc in CyberSecurity. i must have read huncreds of PDF's for my dissertation
Funny how I cant see that tweet.
lol oh well I guess it’s gone, I just deleted the message cause it’s gone now. I guess someone wasn’t happy with ppl knowing that info? Idk
haha yeah
My productivity is also up due to AI same
I guess it wasnt my VPN after all
I'll wait till its around for us mortals to evaluate. Fro what i have read so far its a closed shop at Cognition currently and they arre tight lippwed aboiutt it. Only a few choice people have had access. Well from the few articles I have just read.
yeah hmm
it looks promising but
kinda slow too
but it can be slow 24 hours a day whereas you and i can be slow 8 hours a day. I would imagine its output would surpass ours .
We have so little information about Devin that it’s not clear how competent it is. I think all we have is one software engineering benchmark, which shows a steep improvement but — let’s be real — a 14% hit rate doesn’t inspire a great deal of confidence that it can do anything you throw at it.
Agreed, but 14% this year could be much higher in a few months time.
I also got bored of watching all the Cognition enginers posting videos
why can't you remove credit card even if auto renew is off?
I fired up the VPN and had a play with Notebook LLM. pity it is experimental as I could only frrd it 10 documents. I had about 80 I wanted to play with. Anyhoo. i feed it a Companies Annual reports for 5 years and asked a few questions. It was good at retrevial and I can definitly see some great use cases.
I hope perplexity comes out with something similar
I never seen anything like this before I done prompted all the popular llms this "How to choose thee right ear tip for best sound" and they all responded closely the same here goes.,
Finding the right ear tip is all about getting a perfect balance between comfort and sound quality. Here's what you need to consider:
Fit and Seal:
- This is key! A good seal creates a barrier between your ear canal and outside noise, which is crucial for both deep bass and noise isolation.
- The tip shouldn't be so loose it falls out, but also not so tight it's uncomfortable.
- Try the finger test: Gently put your finger in your ear (start with your pinky). If a certain finger creates a good seal and muffles outside noise, try an ear tip size similar to that finger's width.
Size and Material: - Most earphones come with multiple sized tips (small, medium, large). Experiment with all of them to find the snug yet comfortable fit for your ears.
- There are two main materials:
- Silicone: These are common, affordable, and easy to clean. They come in various shapes like single flange, double flange, and triple flange.
- Memory Foam: These conform to the shape of your ear canal for a great seal and noise isolation. However, they can be more expensive and harder to clean.
👍👍👍
Rip the roundness of those speech bubbles...
ikr
I get that it's on claude.ai but kind of funny when so is Opus
"Try Haiku, you'll like it better! Honestly. ||Please. Our H100s are on fire and our accountant just jumped out the window.||"
Claude 3 Haiku is available for free on Perplexity Labs. Try it now! https://t.co/Zh5Hc4m9qX
For the mods here, how can I have the pro tag?
Looks like Claude got rid of 2.0 with the release of Haiku https://www.reddit.com/r/ClaudeAI/comments/1be3um4/support_for_claude_20_and_older_has_been_removed/
Assuming that's just the claude.ai service but RIP. I never tried Claude 1 but Claude 2 really impressed me with its prose writing abilities even if it was overshadowed by the phenomenon GPT-4 became.
Just today I was also looking for where there's a Discord server or Matrix server chat room where lots of Anthropic (i.e. Claude API) devs hang out and didn't find it yet. It's nice to know about this reddit topic, but does anyone know of any chat rooms dedicated to Anthropic stuff?
I actually asked Claude itself and it gave me a Discord link that was of a room that apparently no longer exists.
Nice, this seems to work. Thanks much!
hello
Hi!
how active is it here?
can't seem to login with google on android
sup everyone
email login is also just sending a login email
anyone else has this problem on android?
i'm using a pixel 6 pro
Anyone having long response times from gemini 1.5?
They definitely changed something and not in a good way
GPT5???
A new era of AI has arrived. Work more productively, boost efficiency, and find new growth opportunities with Copilot.
microsoft already have gpt5?
I remember reading a headline saying copilot will have gpt 4 turbo because openai might release 4.5 soon
I feel its a teaser
But I don't really follow updates
Ok I'm guessing they made a typo with GPT-4 Turbo on that one
Wait I just checked it, I can confirm its real
Only selected users though
lol
I wish it was real
Is this pro version just as locked down as the free version?
Any google dev lurkers in chat pls fix gemini 1.5 responses for long context prompts 🙏 your update is trash 😭
Most likely not a typo. Why would they update that section into a typo?
Because everywhere else on their sites say gpt 4 turbo lol
OpenAI “accidentally” released a blog claiming 4.5 was released with knowledge cutoff of June 2024
It’s probably just a strategy to create hype since Claude is taking it away from them for the time being
Yea
A "leaked" blog post hinting at GPT-4.5, even if accidental, could spark a lot of buzz.
I think a lot unsubscribed to chatgpt and move to claude 3.
I completely missed this! Thats awesome! literally the moment it comes out!!
and its fast! This is gonna be crazy for searches.
Any luck with it? Interested to see if its better than Claude lol
Well ive been enjoying its use thus far
How does it compare to claude and gpt4?
Well in terms of capability google say it's comparable to ultra 1.0
But I've mainly been testing it with uploading textbooks and asking relevant subject questions
Feels a lot more reliable when it's grounded in a full textbook of info that it can directly reference 😂
lol sounds great!
so it’s 1 million context thing is good?
Also the video stuff is p cool too
Yes
It's made me realize how useful long context can be lol
damn that’s good, hope i can get access to it sometime
This was some stuff I tried out when I first got access
WOW It can watch video too??
Yep
No audio yet
It's just considering it as a bunch of images I think using the frames lol
Which is why long context is pretty useful for videos
Hey all, is there like a trashcan I can recover stuff from? I am stupid and went to delete one of my threads at the top and accidently deleted them all. RIP. If not, I propose a 1 day tashcan for recovery #💭│ideas
Not perfect tho
damn
i remember thinking gemini’s vision was pretty garbage
at least the advanced one
(when i tried it)
Really? I think it's superior
this is really in depth wow
In depth but not exactly accurate nor logical in its explanation lol
