coarse venture
#

but i would switch to perplexity if it improved...

agile jay
#

Yep, that is mostly because perplexity is not live scraping the results.

#

Instead they have self indexed a lot of stuff.

agile jay
#

Generally if the sources response is very fast, it's likely not live scraping.

coarse venture
#

sure makes sense

agile jay
#

If you've seen the speed of ChatGPT Plus, or Bing for search, you will know how fast it normally is.

#

Then again, those ones can also click links etc, to navigate around.

coarse venture
#

yeah i mean the bing search has been pretty disappointing with chat GPT lol

agile jay
#

Yep, its advantage is that it can look deeper into a site.

#

Perplex and similar services can generally only look one layer deep.

coarse venture
#

yeah for sure, i am liking phind pro for like no code programming, but it does a pretty good job with general searching

#

but i have not used you pro , i just joined their discord lol

agile jay
#

Yep, technically you can make searching through a site a lot faster, by crawling a few layers deep into the site when indexing, but not sure if they actually use that method. Since you probably need a lightweight model to choose what links to click on in the page. If needed.

spark flint
#

My app said co pilot before; now it says pro. Is this good or bad? Haha sorry if this is a repeat.

agile jay
#

they renamed it because of all the other stuff rebranding to copilot from microsoft etc

waxen lily
#

Does anyone knows if the pro version with claude 3 have the same power as the actual claude 3 oops have?

Like when it comes to token and how many words does claude 3 can process for a conversation and how it te reads the conversation.

I haber the subscription for claude 3 as well as gpt4 and since perplexity have both with their pro subscription I wanted to ask about that. Handling a lot of words and staying relevant over long conversations or long words is one of the most important things to me. Anyone have any I in regards to that?

agile jay
#

Opus, Sonnet, Haiku

rustic fern
#

Anybody wants to ask me anything? I have access to gpt4, claude 3 opus, gemini 1.5 pro, 1.0 ultra, copilot pro, preplexity pro and grok ai.

waxen lily
#

So in other words, would it be accurate to say that using claude 3 in perplexity and selecting "writing" under the"focus section and chat with claude 3 would be the same as to use it through the anthropic website?

rustic fern
#

agile jay

It's nuts how were only allowed to use claude 5 times

waxen lily
#

Johnny,

Would you be able to find a way to test claude 3 throigh anthropic and through perplexity and see if there is anything that would make one special or lacking?

agile jay
#

But should be fixed anyway, pretty soon.

agile jay
#

I am guessing perplexity is currently rate limited.

azure crown
waxen lily

Ohhh I didn't know that of the 5 times

rustic fern
#

Claude 3 in preplexity us specially utilized for searching

#

Claude 3 in thr app is specially utilized for talking with you

#

Due to this

#

The answers you receive will be different

agile jay
#

For reference I have used Opus 100 < times

rustic fern
#

Although you could get the same answer if you try

agile jay
#

Yep, the system message is different

#

But you could write your own, which is even better than theirs...

#

And probably less likely to be hit by a filter too, since it's through the API.

rustic fern
#

@waxen lily give me a promt

#

I will test

waxen lily
#

I belive that the writing in the focus section in perplexity will be a chat without searching the internet.

agile jay
#

Yep, pretty much

rustic fern
#

Yeah

agile jay
#

What they should do is let you bookmark important responses in a collection, so that other threads in the collection get them in their context.

waxen lily
#

I can't think of a prompt. I usually use it to paste long research papers or multiple research papers to get information. Then I ask about it. Kind of like chat pdf but claude can proceed all the information verte in my opinion

rustic fern
#

Hmm.

agile jay
#

What kind of paper?

agile jay
#

Yep, pretty basic to implement too.

rustic fern
#

@agile jay do you think gpt 4 or claude 3 opus outperforms

spark flint
#

Ok I thought that was the case, had to ask 🙂

rustic fern
#

In coding

#

And creative writing

agile jay
#

Firstly, all those benchmarks show GPT4 not GPT4Turbo.

#

It seems that Claude is better at handling a large context without forgetting what is in it.

#

So most likely, for long tasks, it will be better.

rustic fern
#

I see.

agile jay
#

Which creative writing, and coding, generally are.

rustic fern
#

I found it better for creative writing

#

Also

#

How does it compare with gpt 4 turbo?

lusty mantle
#

Fr thinking they could be smart and be like teehee we better then gpt4 buy me

lusty mantle
#

I prefer Google

rustic fern
#

The responses are much more human and it's coding is better

lusty mantle
#

Coding yes it's better

rustic fern
#

Gpt 4 turbo seems to sound too robotic

lusty mantle
#

Wish it could access real time data tho

rustic fern
#

I actually don't like that

agile jay
#

That is mostly to do with the system message though.

rustic fern
agile jay
#

And less about the model.

#

Gemini is the best for translation.

#

Pretty bad in comparison, at everything else.

#

Would recommend pi2.5, which is free and around the same performance as ultra, but responds a lot faster too.

rustic fern
#

Honestly waiting for gpt5

#

And I REALLY hope it sounds human

agile jay
#

Just use a better system message...

rustic fern

Doesn't work

Ahah

I prefer claude 3 at the moment

Waiting though.

Hey, u/DissonantNeuron! The model doesn't have context awareness issue in this case. You have it set to the search mode, so depending on how you put it, there are always two possibilities: 1. your follow-up might be related to the first question 2. your follow-up might be a totally new search, not related to the original question.
And in this example, the way you prompted the model, it decided you're looking for differences in general, relying on the new search results.
My suggestion would be to ask it with a bit more details.

Perplexity cannot keep context in any mode. Here's the proof. I am using Claude Opus in writing mode and am using a file uploaded instead of search results.

https://www.perplexity.ai/search/Can-you-tell-EFwUTvwCRKKp6.HPSjZEFA

From the second response, it starts ignoring the file uploaded (PCI DSS 4.0) and starts answering from it's knowledge base ( which had got only PCI DSS 3.2.1)

Makes me question whether actually Claude Opus was used as the native chatbot (in Claude) didn't hallucinate at all. Perplexity hallucinates multiple times and gives random answers instead of using the template in Appendix E2 from the document uploaded.

I have requested a pro rated refund as I am unable to use it with these issues. It will be great if you could help me with the refund. Tia.

I have attached the answer from native chatbot for reference.

I mean, I believe you just logistically speaking. When I saw that I could do 600 GPT-4 uses a day... with context... I wondered how that was sustainable in any way. Especially when OpenAI only allows non-API a maximum message limit of 213 messages (provided you aren't using it during sleep). The biggest lever to push or pull is context window.

u/SmallestWang avatar
SmallestWang

17h ago
The message limit is way higher on perplexity and is the same price ($20) as Claude and chatgpt separately, while giving access to both . It's kind of crazy they're able to pull this off. I'm guessing they're just subsidizing costs via cheaper api calls (vs subscription) and a large enough user base but that's just speculation from me. Moving the context slider down seems like a way for them to possibly further save on costs as you're suggesting.

I see, what is mentioned there may be related to the way Perplexity handles uploaded files:

Upload plain text or PDF files and Perplexity will use the context of the file to generate answers. Short files will be fed in their entirety into the language model, but longer files will be snippeted past the initial header to find the most relevant text.

This means that if you ask a question about a document, Perplexity will try to find the information in the document without copying the whole file into the prompt.

#

i have both even though i havent had the time to do extensive testing yet. some things to note:

i do a lot of study and ask questions based on documents i provide, GPTs in this regard are excellent because u can make a GPT for a field and load lots of documents and return to that GPT whenever u want to ask more questions on it. chatgpt also seems to hold context better while pplx forgets easily past conversations. chatgpt also feels a lot faster

however pplx gives u access to more models than chatgpt, on top of that searching feature is pretty good (free pplx searches pretty well too)

agile jay

Yep, tbh the usage limit is a lot better on perplexity. I would rather have 600 msgs than 40 every 3 hours...

#

Most people only have a short window when they are active, so 40/3hours means you are wasting a lot of them.

#

I prefer perplexity because of the quick search. But which is better is gonna be determined by your task and how you use them.

Perplexity is trying to be the next Google search, while ChatGPT is trying to become an AGI assistant.

YouAi had a setup where your $23 subscription allows you to publish a public facing bot that can use GPT-4, Claude 2.1, etc, but then if people use your bot too much (i.e., thousands of messages) they just ban your account then leave it up to you to go cancel your subscription through Stripe. That's what I mean about having a bot banned. If you're referring to not understanding some other part of my comment you need to be more clear.

Depends on teh kind of PDF. If it's an image, you need to use OCR to extract the text.
If it's a normal PDF, you check the content file, which links to the pages in order, and then you loop through them and scrape the text, most likely using an xml parser.

  • 🔶 Option C: Gemini Advanced 1.0 Ultra
  • 🔷 Option D: Grok
  • 🔶 Option E: Perplexity AI

I say chatGPT if you need code interpreter, copilot for a solid free web search AI, Gemini if you like google for some reason, grok if you just want an AI to ask questions to and have the latest info, particularly with the perspective people are putting on twitter, perplexity if you want a solid search and an overall good tool with the latest models, meta LLama 3 if you like open source and take privacy seriously or just want to run it for free if you have good hardware.

My own biased opinion is Perplexity for almost everything, seems like it has the most use cases and is my go too for 90% of what I do, and chatGPT plus for complicated math tutoring (using code interpreter), physics and things that require decimal accuracy, or if I want a graph or other data visualization.

someone pointed out the study linked on the github
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41586-023-06668-3.pdf

from another person from the same place...this is absolutely nuts, achieving more MLC than an average person.

The Lake and Baroni paper also lists "Supplementary Information" with details on how they tested their MLC (Meta-Learning for Compositionality) scenario against ChatGPT 3.5 and 4: https://static-content.springer.com/esm/art%3A10.1038%2Fs41586-023-06668-3/MediaObjects/41586_2023_6668_MOESM1_ESM.pdf

In that document, GPT-4 achieved 58% on their MLC test, which was much better than GPT 3.5. That contrasted with the average human's score of 81% and their MLC method which achieved 93% to 97%. However, the authors were frank and humble, admitting that future progress in pure neural net-based LLMs might achieve improved systematicity without MLC methods. However it was unclear if that would happen, and their current research indicates MLC has the potential to improve current LLMs.

One of the referenced papers was "Measuring and Narrowing the Compositionality Gap in Language Models" (2022, Press, et. al): https://arxiv.org/abs/2210.03350 In this paper, they devised some "compositionality" test questions which then-current (2022) LLMs had problems with, such as "Who won the Master’s Tournament the year Justin Bieber was born?" I tried that on GPT-4, Claude 3.0 and Gemini Advanced 1.0, and they all gave the correct answer, so things are rapidly changing.

bitter wren

Perplexity shoul remove the option to select LLMs in the first place, that's overcomplicating it already. IMO it's their job to figure out what model is best for a search, not ours. It's clunky picking different models

livid mantle
#

Another thing, you think Google destroyed "AI SEO" because they just decided to do it? No Let me tell you why:

#

||It's because everyone laughed at them for their problematic image generation, so google is doing this "AI SEO" counter act to get a share of the laughter.||

#

move away from the market of "select your LLM chatbots"

agile jay

Really? I do it based on the task, since models score differently at different tasks.

minor shard
bitter wren
#

if Claude-3 is th event for code, use it to help with code searches

#

if its not, don't

agile jay
bitter wren
#

and if perplexity can't determine if claude-3 is the best for search, well, there's a problem they should work on

bitter wren
#

I'm not saying don't use the models

#

im saying that their moat should be doing it for you

minor shard
agile jay
#

No, at most they should have an auto option in models.

bitter wren
#

if you're researching something X model excels at, use that. don;'t make the user click a box and then try to iterate through them

bitter wren
#

look at all the quesitons online of people asking what model to use etc

agile jay
#

I want to choose the model I'm using...

bitter wren
#

its adding complexity to sa search engine

#

why?

minor shard
agile jay
#

Only if you care about it, and actually go into the settings.

bitter wren
#

you don't want to choose the model you're using - you want the best result possible for your query

agile jay
#

Also they are a small team.

#

What do you do when there isn't a best model for a query?

#

Or the query has multiple questions and different models are good for each part of it?

bitter wren
#

default to the cheapest if they're all the same

minor shard
#

If i don't get the results I like I usually go to another LLM lol

bitter wren
#

query has multiple models?

#

what does that even mean though

agile jay
#

The problem is that models have randomness to them, so there is no best model, there is just the one you prefer.

#

Especially since the models answer the same question differently.

bitter wren
agile jay
#

People like certain models because of how those models answer questions differently.

bitter wren
#

I'm not saying don't use different models

#

I'm saying, a product wher the user is expected to hop around models to find the best result

#

is going to be passed by a company that does the same thing but just picks the model for you

minor shard
agile jay
#

If you are paying for pro, you already care about models enough to learn the difference lol, or just choose the best overall model...

bitter wren
minor shard
bitter wren
#

different models = good, different models the user needs to find out which is best=bad

agile jay
#

Also custom instructions affect different models differently...

bitter wren
#

google let me do lang:en or lang:es etc to choose my results

#

but it makes reasonable default guesses based on a number of factors

agile jay
#

Wouldn't it be great if shops knew what I wanted to buy before I bought them?

bitter wren
bitter wren
agile jay
agile jay
bitter wren
#

its not a multi-billion dollar industry because it doesn't work 🙂

bitter wren
agile jay
#

No, they pray on people who buy stuff they don't need, and don't end up using.

bitter wren
#

"Pro" should just mean to the average user "We use the advanced version of models when we perform your search"

#

not "hope your'e up to date on the latest benchmarks"

agile jay
#

Pro, means you're a professional and should know the difference...

bitter wren
bitter wren
agile jay
bitter wren
#

it clearly works, even if apparently not on you

agile jay
#

Well most people aren't buying every ad they see are they?

bitter wren
#

Claude-3 is currently the best at programming, no?

agile jay
#

So clearly it only works a small fraction of the time.

bitter wren
#

My queries related to code should be claude-3, period.

#

If some advanced user wants to use sometihing etc sure

agile jay
#

No it isn't. Depends on the programming language. The output language and how lazy the model is.

bitter wren
#

otherwise what is perplexity even offering? just another chatbot? there are tons of these that let you select the model

bitter wren
agile jay
#

How would they know?

#

They gonna somehow test every single programming language?

bitter wren
#

I would hope as a company they're investing in more than just a UI and REST API calls

agile jay
#

Hopefully they are pros in all of them.

bitter wren
#

are they not devleloping technology that evaluates queries?

agile jay
#

Most of the work is in the indexer I imagine.

#

Since it has to keep on crawling to keep stuff up to date.

bitter wren
#

if your pitch is LLM+search, I kind of expect a lot of your tech to be finding out which LLM is best for which search

agile jay
#

Also there is already an API that does what you said.

bitter wren
#

So maybe advanced users who know the specifics of the LLM models they want should be the ones using an API

#

and the average customer should just get the best guess, which is better than no guess

#

people want a simple search box that gives he best possible results

agile jay
#

A random user is generally not paying $20/month on something they don't understand.

bitter wren
#

yeah, exactly.

#

the average user isn't going to pay $20 a month if they need to know the latest on all LLMs. they will pay $20 a month if it results in "pro" searches that give clearly better results

agile jay
#

IDK, mostly seems like you are annoyed you don't know the best model for your queries.

bitter wren
#

Oh im not annoyed i just started using it

#

i just dont think you're going to get most consumers onboard wi thneeding to pick between "perplexity" "experimental" and "claude" on every search

#

if the goal is to be a niche tool for specific users, sure. if the goal is too be the "google of LLMs", the current approach requires teaching everyone how to stay up to date on LLM changes and different specialities etc. I don't think that' going to get a very wide audience.

agile jay
#

RIP, can't find that API which already has an endpoint for chooseing the best model for the query.

bitter wren
#

the google of LLM can't tell folks to go use an API

#

most people dont know what that is

agile jay
#

Too bad for them then.

bitter wren
#

well, no, I think they'll find a company willing to do that for them

#

and after reading a couple papers on the topic of bias in ML models generally that's actually a heck of a good illustration of how it works

Just as a user not really trying across hours of usage I can tell "ChatGPT style" to an extent, but honestly other models are better at varying their style and vocabulary, and I think a core problem is even if a model has a particular set of favorite tokens due to its weights and such there are so many fine tunes out there that between the variety of models and the ability to tweak sampling/filtering parameters like temperature and top-k the countermeasures seem far easier on the generating side.
Right now you probably still get caught if you just rip text and leave it in "ChatGPT style", or more likely don't vet hallucinated content and just submit a paper with lies in it.

#

The way Harvard is doing it with CS50x is such a good example with their "rubber duck debugger" though (cs50.ai)
They did their own fine tune, left it to the honor code to only use their AI for help (I might be miswording this), and kind of acknowledge the reality of the situation that people use AI but don't learn if they offload too much to it

I wonder if there are educational companies trying to do that in the general sense, help schools/courses provide AIs that help but don't give up everything for the sake of struggling while learning

#

I've had many searches where it's using over 20 sources

austere kestrel
#

Guess it also depends on the actual number of tokens used by each source. Like it's not the full article (given the "snippets" language used by Perplexity)

#

But without knowing how each system actually uses the material from each source, it seems kinda hard to put it down just to the number of sources retrieved imo

And then they're able to crawl the web at a breadth and frequency that noone else really can just due to the resources required to maintain that coverage / rececency across so much of the surface web

I can't remember a recent thing they've made which was successful and wasn't just an acquisition.

It's also why they have the largest graveyard in big tech.

austere kestrel

the company's success is inextricably linked to its position as the world's dominant search engine - no one would pay for ads, and it would no have money to acquire other ocmpanies, if it didn't do that core function better than any other company to get it to that position in the first place

@othman Very thought provoking post, @Othman! Not sure I agree with all of your views, but my takeaways are:

  • Google needs to start caring more about winning in AI than about internal politics/political agendas. From the outside, it appears there’s a high level of “hand-tuning” going…
agile jay
#

I never said they failed. I said they are degrading/dying.

#

Their main ways of making money are slowly dying.

#

For example using perplexity, do you see search ads?

When you have more models like Sora, then YouTube will also start having competition.

Google is definitely not failed, just not keeping up.

hey gang how are you all.

I'm new to this slack and I thought the community and the product was incredible but I was looking a leverage this tool for a little bit of help and it seems like I'm in a chat with a bunch of superintelligence bright people. I am looking for an AI to generate assets for me a lot like supplement labels and content for creative while also having an API built out for some small stuff I need to market my business and to pass financial data from one environment to another.

Does anyone have any pointers or direction where I could start with this while being not that technical? if so feel free to direct message me so I don't blow up a common space with personal things

I've been using it for some pretty hard-core research. So what I usually do is I go to Google scholar type in the subject that I want information on and then pull 20 or 40 different PDFs of research and then upload it into notebook llm and have it explained everything to me so if anyone wants to see an example of it I can drop you over a link of something that I used it for the other day where I think once you put eyes to it you'll understand how big of a deal that is for anyone who wants to launch a business but doesn't wanna make unfounded claims or anything along those lines

fluid mauve

My productivity is also up due to AI, and you are correct about the people who don't get it. Its not a fad and it will end up changing the working landscape.

Another tool I use a lot for summarizing you tube vids etc is Daniel Miesslers fabric . I just cpy the trandscript and get a summary of the video, I can then decide whether its worth watching. I sift a lot of these now and stick them in a db. its growing by the day. https://github.com/danielmiessler/fabric

We have so little information about Devin that it’s not clear how competent it is. I think all we have is one software engineering benchmark, which shows a steep improvement but — let’s be real — a 14% hit rate doesn’t inspire a great deal of confidence that it can do anything you throw at it.

I never seen anything like this before I done prompted all the popular llms this "How to choose thee right ear tip for best sound" and they all responded closely the same here goes.,
Finding the right ear tip is all about getting a perfect balance between comfort and sound quality. Here's what you need to consider:
Fit and Seal:

  • This is key! A good seal creates a barrier between your ear canal and outside noise, which is crucial for both deep bass and noise isolation.
  • The tip shouldn't be so loose it falls out, but also not so tight it's uncomfortable.
  • Try the finger test: Gently put your finger in your ear (start with your pinky). If a certain finger creates a good seal and muffles outside noise, try an ear tip size similar to that finger's width.
    Size and Material:
  • Most earphones come with multiple sized tips (small, medium, large). Experiment with all of them to find the snug yet comfortable fit for your ears.
  • There are two main materials:
    • Silicone: These are common, affordable, and easy to clean. They come in various shapes like single flange, double flange, and triple flange.
    • Memory Foam: These conform to the shape of your ear canal for a great seal and noise isolation. However, they can be more expensive and harder to clean.
