This nytimes case should be interesting. Perplexity doesn’t copy verbatim what a news article will read if you ask it to (which is what openAI does when you ask it to), but it does summarize articles if you ask it to, which is something that is in the lawsuit.

Of course, other news organizations will do the exact same thing. So where do you draw the line?

I think the verbatim recall of an article is definitely a no no, but I think everything else should be ok

• I'm trying to incorporate Perplexity's "pplx-70b-online" search results via their API into an "action" on an OpenAI custom GPT.
• Which requires obtaining or creating a Perplexity API "schema" in proper OpenAI format to then input to the custom GPT.
• I've looked everywhere on the Perlexity stite, and used ChatGPT to help. Together we have a schema that doesn't get error coded immediately, but when tested it fails.

• FWIW that schema I put up actually does work with the API key set to Bearer in custom GPT.
• Meaning it passes the custom GPT setup and moves on to allow the testing. And the testing also seems to work other than the block on Perplexity's end.
• So maybe that'll save someone some time some day when Perplexity allows it.
• Those schemas are a PITA to get right for a non-programmer btw.
• Took me several hours to get three others working today - Keymate.AI, Metaphor and Wolfram.
• Also FWIW, I don't think most people realize how many websites are blocked to the native chatGPT browser with Bing.
• Which is why I'm going through all this trouble to get a better browser search function.

I am using perplexity to look op websites that have been provided by a customer only the organisation name and town have been given. Sofar I am always getting the correct homepage if I ask "can you give me the organisation homepage URL" using the perplexity front-end website. However, doing this with the AI model (pplx-70b-online") . E.g what is the homepage of organisation X in town : Y. This always gives me more wrong answers.

I figured it out, the other models I was using prepend instructions to the user prompt. Both are using the same language model but perlexity wasn't prepending anything to the user prompts which result in perlexity giving me the correct answer to the prompt where the others were way off.

in the paper, they judge the the answers based on whether the answers are supported by a citation, and whether those citations support the actual answer. I figure that GPT-4 would be better inherently better at the latter, given that bing chat appears to operate better on the latter, and I imagine that it might be better for the former too.

I would recommend using it as a search shortcut instead. You can put "pp" as the shortcut then when you type that and space it will auto switch to perplexity

I've been curious about: what is the difference between pplx online models (7B/70B)and Perplexity your main product? From users' perspective, both aim to provide fast and accurate factual answers, but is there any difference in the underlying product design? My understanding is that Perplexity rephrases the user's query, searches it through search engines, presents high-ranking link content along with the user's query to the LLMs, which then organizes the answers. Is the process the same for pplx models? I speculate that what you refer to as "website excerpts" and "snippets" might be another, more lightweight mechanism? Thanks

About API: why the endpoint errors out if both Presence Penalty and frequency penalty parameters are present? Other OAI-compatible apis allow this. One more (minor) thing: your api lacks the /models endpoint, that should be present returning the available models that can be selected.

Not sure but I would assume it is additional. As in it costs $5 for 1000 queries regardless of how long/many tokens they are. But the additional/total costs would ultimately be determined by length of the respective responses(/outputs) for each query. So if the query is, "what is the capital of Ireland" and the output is simply "Dublin", it'll be on the cheapest end of possibilities; but if the query/request involves a lengthy output, it'll be more expensive - kinda thing. But I may well be totally wrong and have misunderstood 🤷‍♂️
